The official running thread™

Im pretty chuffed with myself today. I managed to do my longest run yesterday, doing the 32 at the Colgate road race. Pretty happy averaging 6:53 / KM

I have to admit that stretch from 22 to 26 was mentally quite hectic, but when I got to 26 I knew I have 6 KM left and thats doable.

One odd thing is that my legs in general feels OK (my knees are a bit tender), but my arms are actually quite sore. Im guessing its from my stiff running style and keeping the arms up for almost 4 hours
Nice one. I also upgraded from 21s with the colgate as my first 32 and really surprised myself. I've been training for about 10 weeks and garmin predicted a 3:02 and I made it in 2:52. Boy did I feel it afterwards.... and not a medal in sight for us.

Nice!! Thanks pretty quick! Well done! Yeah Ive done 5x 15s over the years and the medals have always been nothing to write home about, so I really dont mind. Whats amusing it my wife did the 15 and she got a medal because she was one of the first 1500.

All in all I have to say the race was well organized and good value for money. It took a lot of discipline to not turn off and only do 15, but thats the horrible side of double lappers.

rant incoming...

Ive been running for years now and I still dont understand why runners are so messy. Surely it doesn't take that much effort to slow down for a second to drop your empty water bag, cup. gel bag etc. in a bin. 90% of the runners just moers it on the floor and continues. I know I make absolutely zero difference, but Ill rather carry the empty water bag to the next water point and drop it in a bin there.

Same. There's no need to litter the entire race route.

It's an absolute disgrace. Two Oceans was a complete free-for-all. People just dropping cups on the road when there are several bins right there. I abhor it.

I ran the inaugural Sun City Parkrun on Saturday. Awesome parkrun; paved all the way around the Gary Player Golf Course, downhill start and finish. It was my 4th fastest parkrun in the last 11 years, and about 2.5 to 3 minutes faster than any parkrun I've done in the last 5 years.

Bruce Fordyce was there, of course. Chatted with him a bit.

On a more depressing nore. With winter setting in anyone else move to afternoon runs? Takes me a while to get used to them but I'll be damned if I am going to run on a freezing morning. Takes me ages to warm up as it is.
I do pretty much all my runs in the afternoon since that's the only real way to fit them into my schedule. With it getting dark so soon now it's a pain in the afternoon too. If you don't hit the road by 5PM you are basically ending sessions in the dark. Runs 1h+ will also end up running in the dark. With all the idiot drivers around here that's a dangerous proposition.

Didnt Sun City have a parkrun? Maybe Im confusing it with the 5KM route they had that timed you if you had a champion chip on your shoe (this is maaaany moons ago)

No, never. I think the closest has been in Rustenburg.

Unfortunately I cannot advise as I LOVE morning running, for a few reasons:

1) Pollution is at it's lowest imho
2) You are running on an empty stomach
3) You own the road (assuming your area is "safe-ish")
4) It's more predictable from a time-table perspective (I have small kids)
5) Most races start in the morning

In terms of temperatures, I find putting a buff over my nose/mouth helps for the first few km's, then I'm so hot that anything more than a t-shirt and shorts would irritate me. I also carry a small head-lamp in my pocket and put it on in dark sections only.

Disclaimer: My area is fairly safe, so I can pull it off, but agreed if safety is a concern than all my points are null and void. I also don't run with a phone or ear-phones, for safety reasons.
There's also the mental aspect of starting the day on a high and not having to worry about being too knackered for an afternoon run.
I've been sidelined for 3 months due to injury, but almost ready to head out in the cool winter air again.
Can't wait.

Finally got an anaerobic session to test out he HR chest strap. Seems to be much more responsive for the intervals. Although I had a weird blip where it lost my HR reading for a second for some reason. Any idea why that would be?

I agree with all of this. I’m up at 4 am for my runs, which gives me enough time to fit in a solid 70 minute session followed by some strength training all before my son wakes up (he’s an early bird too). I typically do double runs five to six days a week. By 1 pm I’m still energized and in the right mindset to head out for a recovery or easy jog and it doesn’t feel like a mental struggle to get moving. But after 3 pm geewiz it becomes much harder mentally, and I often end up skipping the run or replacing it with cross training. Living in a coastal area, there’s an added bonus to running early. no wind! From around noon onward, it gets noticeably windier so mornings are ideal. Anyways I'm absolutely soaked now. Went for a run and the rain came pissing down around the 14km mark.

I can't remember which hr strap you bought, but if you have it connected to multiple devices ie. Watch via ant+ and phone via bt then this tends to happen.
+1 for accuracy. Coros gave me a Armband HR monitor. I tested it and although better accuracy than the built in hrm in my watch, the chest strap still proves to be more accurate than the arm band. Sorry coros.
