The Official Vidi Local Streaming Feedback Thread

Actually, it was more the streaming experience that caused me to give up. Just too much buffering and generally poor quality.

I'm sticking with dstv. HD quality, no loading time, and excellent online streaming. If you have an Explora you will see that Vidi is a poor comparison. Besides being slow, at 1gig data usage per movie, plus movie rental, plus Telkom line rental, plus DSL line all this at not so good streaming quality - DSTV is still tops in value for money.

Yeah, not like you can use the internet for anything else like work, or internet banking or whatever.

This product is basically aimed at the same people that would use Netflix or Hulu yet it's so far behind technologically that it's just a no brainer when deciding which option to get.

Got to love the backlash to the poor guy who likes dstv, currently I am in the same boat. With Internet not that reliable it's actually easier to have DSTV even the new UI on the explora makes things easier

So, with this new big push to advertise - have they sorted out the technical issues?

Selection and UI was poor. Cancelled within the trial month. Streaming worked mostly.

I did not sign up for the subscription to begin with - just the free 30 day access... they still tried to charge my card after that 30 days even without any active subscription. Sly buggers.

In other news... Got an email yesterday from them about them paying for your (adsl) data!

How does VIDI pay for my data?
If you are using ADSL and ADSL only, the player will detect whether point-to-point tunnelling protocol is enabled and available via your router. If it is, then the player initiates a secure tunnel connection to our server, creating a separate connection to your current PPPoE account via the router.
If the Player fails to detect the tunnel protocol it will deliver as a standard via the users ISP PPPoE account.
If the Player tunnel protocol detection is successful, it will deliver video content via a session created secure account tunnel. The video that is delivered via the tunnel does not affect the PPPoE account at all. All video will be delivered in quality and rate using our adaptive technology.
We cover any ADSL service provider in SA, and any router which supports one of the following:

VPN passthrough for IPSec, PPTP or L2TP
TP-Link, Netgear and Siemans are all compatible routers.
Billion and other brands, only various models
Certain budget routers do not have this protocol available

So if it works, you don't pay for streaming data? Does it notify you if it succeeded with the tunnel or not? Also, they should at least cover the two standard routers that Telkom supplies.

That's the first novel thing they've done so far! Hope they do it properly unlike the rest of their half-assed efforts.

You might use data when browsing their website, but other than that I'd guess the actual streaming runs through the tunnel and thus you do not pay for any data streamed from their servers. Unfortunately I do not know more than what I have pasted above - no idea if the player/profile might have some setting or something that will allow you to get a visual indication or lock system in place. Regarding router support, they are dependent on IPSec/PPTP/L2TP support on the routers to make this work seamlessly and thus cannot merely decide to support router X just because telkom supplies it.

Ok...so rented a once off movie tonight...and even thought the movie sucked...their streaming sucked even more. Video would pause every few seconds and then continue again after two seconds.

After the movie finished tested it with youtube and it worked flawless on hd streaming. No buffering or stuttering.

You with Afrihost?

I subscribed to the free 7 day trial yesterday and haven't been able to do much since.

1) Could not add credit card - I get a red text "Unexpected Error Occurred" message (looks like shoddy programming to me).
2) Could not Edit Parental Filter (browser hangs on the "busy" popup window).

I have 6 days left and can't use the trial because of the above...

Any Vidi people on here to explain what the problem is?

Did you try their support? Would be nice to hear some feedback regarding this side of the business.

I tried the service again last night and the problems seem to be resolved. I didn't try their support so can't comment there.

My comments on VIDI in general:
Content is quite limited from my perspective. Most of the stuff seems quite old, and I didn't see many of the more popular, newer series either.
Streaming was perfect though - I was very impressed with this side of the service. I'm on a 10mb/s Afrihost line that runs at about 8mb/s.
