Ok, took the leap this morning and orderred the Mi Max 2, black at $242 and $8.38 for Aramex priority line. That worked out to R3639.54 that Paypal took from my bank account.
Will report back when I pay customs etc. I also orderred a screen protector, case and extra type C cable, though, I was forced to do a separate transaction, as it wasn't stocked in HK warehouse, with the phone.

Can't say I had your problem, but I did things differently. Downloading the latest update via wifi at work took too long, so I went here, grabbed, and flashed it. After setting up the phone, everything else updated fine on wifi.

These new bezel-less phones from Xiaomi look so good. So tempted to get the Note 5 over the A1.

I can't say I have had that either. What happens when you select Auto Updates in the Gear menu in the System app updater menu?

Hope you not have the same problem as a friend I'm helping.

Found that the phone had a custom ROM. Trying to go Stock via updater app failed. Used Mi Flash util to flash latest recovery image. This worked fine but when we connected to the internet the phone gave "Your Device is associated with an existing MI Account (172*****). Seeing that this was a China number I recon that was the reseller's account to be able to unlock and load custom ROMs.

No amount tries or hack this helped, the moment the phone connected to the internet it came back with same lock even when using MIUI.eu ROM. Only ROM that worked was LinageOS but this had its own problems (Apps that stop working) so we had to try and get MIUI stock on. Only option for him now is to contact Xiaomi Support with proof of purchase and hope they can unlock the device on their systems as per Advice from this search result.

Will be waiting to hear from you about customs.. I'm scared to take the plunge lol. If they don't come from the same warehouse won't you have to pay for two deliveries?

Eish, that sounds seriously dodgy.

Maybe somebody stole his IMEI and other hardcoded numbers? :(

Gearbest, they have to log onto the phone with an Mi Account that has Unlock prems to flash custom ROM's. They not the only ones that do that, all resellers do it with Chinese Phones.

That is not the problem, the problem is much worse.

MIUI does not cater for second had markets. If someone buy's your phone and some time in future log in 3 times wrong with the Mi account the phone will go into a lock state and only the 1st Mi account that activated that phone has the ability to unlock it. There use to be a tool to remove and bypass this Mi account but this now 2 does not work anymore as the phone will reset its lock state the moment it has access to the internet.

I think I will add this to the OP as a caveat

Can do, to overcome this you need to send Proof of purchase, photo of phone box with IMEI and a code you get from the phone by tapping 10 times on the lock to service.global@xiaomi.com

Give them about 3 days to respond. They say about 3 days for the Unlock to happen but will update how long the whole process took.

The other stuff I took on registered mail, much cheaper. Will take a while to land this side, but that's fine with me. Won't be any customs for that.
The phone on the other hand, I'll keep you guys posted on that.

All my previous phones I bought from Geekbuying, had no issues at all. This is my first phone I buy from Gearbest, hope it doesn't disappoint.

I bought a phone on the 27th of September with Aramex shipping, still no phone. Last update was 06 October when it was at the facility in HK...

This is irritating me to no end. The cover and screen protector has not been dispatched yet although it shows dispatched due to no stock, even though there was more than 200 items when I paid.

Have you queried Gearbest online support as to what the hold up might be? Or is it with the Aramex depot in HK?

Aramex says the phone is in Dubai waiting for something and Gearbest said there is no stock of the cover for the phone but when I ordered it there were more than enough. When replying to their mails I get ignored.
