The Official Xiaomi Thread

I bought the Redmi Note 8 Pro in December and I'm so impressed from a value for money point of view. MIUI took some getting used too but I actually kind of like it now. And yes, it is running a Mediatek chipset which may mean that custom ROMs are not an option for me but I'm honestly okay with that too. I don't know if I have the time or energy to mess around with the custom ROMS any more.

First thing I did was to install Nova Launcher.
I hate having all the apps plastered all over the homescreen(s).
( Old school app drawer is where it's at  )

Definitely one of my biggest gripes but I opted to simply group my apps into categories that make sense to me and moved them all, one page right of the home screen. This is now my version of an app drawer. YMMV but this is working really well for me so far. I do sometimes have to take a second to try and remember where I put lesser-used apps but I'd face the same issue with app drawer as I usually can't even remember the app names in these situations.

I hear you.

For me:
I've got one homescreen with all the apps I use regularly.
Just one. No clutter, no right or left screens.
The app drawer is arranged alphabetically, so I know where to go virtually instantly if I need other stuff ;)
Of course, you gotta do what works best for you

Nova was the first app I installed on my Samsung phones, back when I thought that their phones were better .

It has become a habit to install Nova first with a new phone, together with my latest Google backup of my current apps. I transfer the latest Nova backup to the new phone, import it and voila - the new phone is basically set up with the same look and feel as the previous one.

While I am happy with my current setup, I'll probably check out Nova anyway because so many people have recommended it in this thread.

+1

This is also what I do and recommend to family. Nova and swiftkey and I am happy on pretty much any android flavor.

One of the big advantages of Nova is that you can emulate your current setup, then tweak it further if required. Big plus is that you can duplicate that setup onto any Android phone or tablet

My last android phone was a samsung galaxy S3 mini back in days of the struggle. And back then I was into playing around with Nova - came back to android recently and after a few days I found myself back to using Nova full time more so now that I discovered Kustom Widgets.

I purchased a redmi 8 from takealot for R2500. I know I could have gotten it cheaper or even buy a better phone by importing. But I haven't done that before so I was abit hesitant. Apart from nova launcher what apps I need to other download. And I see there's a battery drain issue for some Xiaomi phones after upgrading to Android 10. You guys having problems? Also anything I need to look with this phone?

I also got the red cover version from TA - very happy with the battery life - very happy with the CPU responsiveness (even though it is a Qualcomm 4xx) - currently there is no update to Android 10 for this model so wait until it happens before worrying

Sorry if this is a little off topic.

I purchased an affordable item from Amazon. It wasn't a smartphone. Aramax claims this parcel has been detained at customs.

They need invoices and proof of transaction from bank statement to release the item.

The screen grab from internet banking wasn't good enough. They are asking for a full stamped statement from bank.

This item is worth less than R1000. Wtf?

Is SARS intentionally trying to make it difficult to import items.Very annoying

They randomly stop items below R500 value, but all items above that are stopped.
The statement just needs to have the account number ect at the top to make it valid. Also helps if you highlight the transaction to make it easier for them to spot it.

You can use https://invoice-generator.com/ to generate an invoice. Download the Amazon logo and put it on. Be sure to not cheat on it, make the info 100% accurate and valid.

Although since it is Amazon, it may be better to request an invoice from them. I usually make one up with the above for the smaller shops where they don't send proper invoices.

Happened to me in December. Kept complaining to amazon that aramex is unresponsive as I sent the required documents to them days/weeks ago. Aramex would respond to my queries after about a week. Amazon finally said that the package was lost in transit and will be doing a refund. The morning the refund was in my account was the same day the package was delivered. Was mired than a month. Even though it took 3 days to get from the US to SA.

Yeah battery life is amazing. I the sapphire blue one. Kinda glossy and cheap looking but I'll live with it.

*shameless ad bump*

Since this is a Xiaomi thread I might get some Xiaomi lovers eyes on something I have for sale. Fairly certain it should go quickly at R7000 but if not you all have some time to consider.
