The Operating System Debate Thread

lol - took me 15 years, and I still cannot use Windows. But, there I think, the blame is squarely on the OS.
I just never could figure out how to stop an IE crash from taking out the whole system - no matter how much I studied.
:D

ha ha ha...

Kinda like explaining to a guy why his car's engine falls out every time he runs out of petrol.

I think you got that backwards so I fixed it for you.

nah - at work i have the pleasure of working on Mac and on PC and Macintosh needs twice the amount of RAM as a Windows machine before it can even compare. Which says to me it has **** memory management.

when it comes to using flash, a freaking Pentium II outperforms against even a QuadCore G5 Apple in the flash runtime. The reason being is for some reason flash cannot utilise the Apple GPU however it can on a PC which says to me there are some problems with the OSX architecture.

but dont get me wrong.

Macs ARE great, PC's are just better.

lol - are all your assumptions based on a 2005 Apple G5? Not sure if you heard but apple switched to intel a few years back . . . . its a whole different ball game now. :D

If Adobe hasnt yet figured out (and maybe they have in recent times) how to utilise apples GPU then you can hardly blame Apple - its kind of like just blaming Microsoft for Firefox's memory leak problems. Perhaps Adobe should invest more effort into it?

I never have memory problems but then I'm running a fairly modern OS (leopard) on relatively recent hardware (MacBook Pro). I also have a few PCs too and they do the jobs they've been tasked to do brilliantly. :)

I'd be glad to . . . . but first . . . what's a weel? :D

um, oh
Let me see here..
/me gets out "The A-Z Book of Excuses for Dummies"

bad spallling...bad spallin...ah, bad spelling:
"Sorry, It was a bit [late/early] in the [night/day], oops"
"t'was a typo mate!"
"Sorry, but my FireFox does not have a spell checker built into it."
"That's not spelt wrong!"

^Pick one :p

It was a mere typo - and my FireFox does not have a spell checker built into it. :D

That takes me to something else that is bothering me...
...its kind of like just blaming Microsoft for Firefox's memory leak problems...

Since when does FireFox have a "memory leak" problem? What do you define as a Memory Leak? Because as far as I know, This "memory leak" you are talking about, is 101% normal in FireFox by the way - actually, it's a Feature of FireFox! :eek_:

As this guy surmises - maybe its memory leak or maybe it is something else masquerading as one.

Alternatively, is is a common misconception that ff has memory issues?

Or like you said - is it a feature :D

EDIT - Firefox (on my PC) takes more than 20 seconds to load - is that another feature? :)

I installed Vista Ultimate yesterday for the first time and I was impressed for about 30 mins then I got bored and went back to OSX.

:p

yeah and when you install windows on one of them intel machines flash runs faster then under the mac osx.

according to adobe apple's OS is incapable of doing this :/ cuz if it wasnt for flash i would only use a mac

depends on what you doing. but when you start working on photoshop and flash with fireworks and dream weaver in the background an apple with lets say 2Gb Ram under performs in the same scenario vs a pc with 2Gb of ram.

and oh yeah - i only ever print with a pc cuz since the begging of time - Mac's take FOREVER to print, but atleast now you can work while the MAC is taking 8 minutes to spool a 1Mb file to print.

the real saviour for a mac is windows :D

Firefox in my oppinion is an overated browser considering it is getting worse and worse with each update.

on my PC sometimes FF NEVER loads :D

Mine (FF 1.5.0.7) just took 10.3 Seconds to start up and open Google. This is on my system that needs a Format asap and was also running other programs during this 'test'. :)

you prob. ran in on a mac book, get a quad system :p

When I build my quad+8800gt system I will be using Vista for gaming for sure, but Windows bores me to death, I get more satisfaction using Linux or OSX.

And even that doesnt seem long to you?

ok ok ok

I just removed the plugins I don't use. Took 5.38 seconds to start up, even with my sloppy stopwatch reaction time. I'm cool with that. (cause I Hate IE7)

So you're going to use it without plug ins then? :) There is no MSIE for OsX and I'm fine with that too!
