The pc I just built is now stuck in a boot loop. I have tried reseating everything. Giving up and taking it in for an expert to check it. I suspect one of the parts is broken.

Had that happen with faulty memory. Hope they sort it.

Anyone got a 6600K? Decided to see how well mine overclocks today and turns out I've got something of a dud chip :cautious:

Takes a ****-ton of voltage (1.42V) to get it to boot into Windows @ 4.7Ghz where it promptly fails AIDA64's stability test within a minute. Wanted to keep it under 1.4V so I've settled on 4.5Ghz @ 1.37V.

Meh.

You can get Windows 10 pro for R299. Check out the carbonite forum.

Okay, something interesting just happen, MineAway where I bought my CPU just called and said that they don't have stock of the Core i5 8400 and are willing to give the Intel i5-8600 Oem for the same price... So ja, lets hope and see if it's as good as it sounds.

Nah you'll be good. MineAway is run by PotterH from Carbonite and has very good reseller rep.

*just a first time PC builder passing through*
Hi folks, Google sent me here in my quest for knowledge and advice. Reading through the thread (extensive!), I think I found the right place.

I grew up playing turn-based strategy games (AOE, Caesar’s and co) and would like to rekindle a great past time in my adult years. Similar games along with RPG’s (not a shooter, action fan really)

I recently received a R5000 Takealot voucher, and knowing very little about PC builds, would like to spend the better part of the festive season, acquiring all the necessary pieces to complete my very own build.

What I have gathered from the forum is the video card and motherboard are the finickier of the components. Could someone suggest the best deal I can get with 12K on Takealot on those two pieces, combined? To get me started.

TIA.

Would it be OK if I split it R5k takealot & R7k elsewhere or is the R7k vested via discovery miles, ebucks etc?

Secondly you need to elaborate on exactly what you need, thus the case & contents, case+display+peripherals etc.? Do you have any existing components like psu, hdd etc that can be used in the build and if yes provide, brand, model spec info.

Hi Ponder. Yes, a years worth of diligent FNB spending has graced me with a happy eBucks balance. So the 7K would need to be spent there. As for any subsequent purchases, the likes of WOOTWARE and Rebeltech will be A-OK.

This build will have to be from scratch as I have been a console gamer over the years (easier for the littlen’s)

I do not have any “set-budget” in mind, as I will be using dividends from my share portfolio to pay for the build over the coming months. (TIP: Buy Tiger Brands shares, Enterprise is coming! ) However I feel anything “over the top” will be wasted on a casual gamer like myself. So, whatever will be necessary to accompany a GPU to the value of +- 8-10K, is what I’m after.

Hope this helps!

R8-10k for a gpu is already over the top for a casual gamer ;)

Example,
https://www.takealot.com/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1080-g1-gaming-edition-graphics-card/PLID41687500
https://www.takealot.com/gigabyte-z370m-d3h-m-atx-intel-8th-generation-ddr4-motherboard/PLID47263863

Or we can stretch that R12k a bit further,
https://www.takealot.com/gigabyte-h310m-s2h-8th-gen-socket-1151-ddr4-m-atx-motherboard/PLID51968333
https://www.takealot.com/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1070-windforce-2x-edition-graphics-card/PLID43024562
2x https://www.takealot.com/crucial-8gb-ddr4-2400mhz-desktop-single-rank/PLID42482264
https://www.takealot.com/samsung-860-evo-series-2-5-500gb-ssd/PLID48757884

So for just over R12k you get a MB, gtx 1070, 16gb ram & 500gb ssd. How does that sound?

Now we could drop down to 250gb ssd and 1060 gpu, the savings from that will probably buy you a 1tb hdd, power supply and a case. this would leave you with only a cpu, mouse, keyboard and display to buy.

The 1060 is fine for 1080p gaming, if a year down the line you feel it's not enough you can sell it and get a newer/better gpu. Paired with this CPU you'll be able to upgrade to any GPU

I'm needing to go buy a network cable today however I don't know exactly what I need. It's simply for running from the router to my PC. I see like cat5 and cat6 and also a straightforward Lan Network cable and yeah, I don't want to get the wrong thing. Which one please guys!

Get Cat5e for reliable gigabit ethernet...Cat6 (10 Gigabit) is overkill and Cat5 is for 10/100 (can sometimes do gigabit but not reliably and usually only over a short cable).
