You'll notice that most reputable tech guys will actually tell you to steer away from all the overpriced fluff that has "gaming" stamped on it.

I'm aware of that but here's the problem: You can't stay clear of that crap even if you wanted to. I literally just did a filter on the Wootware site for both Coffe Lake and AM4 motherboards. Not a single one of those boards prioritizes function over form and every single one of them are overpriced as a result of it.

But alas, I'll stop my rant here, except for saying:
In 2019 you can pay R11K for a motherboard that can be specced out to move multiple gigabytes/s of data between NVME's or whatever, yet you're still getting a Gigabit LAN adapter on the f**ing thing that's been a standard since '99. Yet, in the next few month you're going to see endless discussions in the "tech" community about the pros and cons of PCIE 4.0.

Ok don't get angry at me now but here's a tip that's not gonna cost you a cent, sell the 2500k on carb and then buy a i7 2600 or i7 3770 from carb or do a swap. The i7 4C/8C will really help a lot with newer games and allow that 1070 to stretch it's legs a bit.

That's actually something I seriously considered a few months ago. It just takes a while to get a hit on a component so I eventually lost interest. I might need to revisit that idea.

In fact, I've got two i5 2500k's, as well as an Asus P67 board (to overlock of course), and also and awesome intel 1155 board that's not so much for overclocking but that has features (and still gets BIOS updates) that would make these "gaming" brands blush.

P.S. I really wish Intel still made boards.

Rant away, we're all on board. We've been fleeced for years, it's hardly a new thing. It's no coincidence, either, that you can't just find a standard board for sale on most common retail sites. They know all the "gaming" crap sells, so that's all they advertise/stock. It's an industry-wide problem.

I had a quick look on carb just now and there are plenty on offer for cheap, you could even make a profit in switching as the K chips command a higher premium.

Do it! ;)

I'm still rocking an i5 4690 from 2014, my upgrade is gonna be an i7 4790 & another 8GB RAM. The 4 core CPUs are really battling these days, just finished AC Origins and my i5 was pegged at 100% utilization most of the time :(

But the question is, was the game playable? :P

Jees, you weren't kidding. Some good stuff on there now.

If you are going to game then money should go to PSU, CPU, GPU & Monitor. The rest is secondary and you could get away with a half decent CPU.

First and second Gen Ryzen chips are going to be flogged by retailers and upgraders next month. The 2600 new is already 25% below its launch price and that's without a replacement being launched. The 1600x is 40% below it's launch price.

Those chips were good value at launch and are only getting better to the point where they're already beating the coming 3000 series on price-performance (probably).

First gen Ryzen is awesome. My system is still purring along with its 1500x (now available for £80 less than what I paid for it new).

I'm probably going to hang onto my old system for now and wait for Zen 2 pricing to drop and for any potential kinks to be sorted out (not that I expect any issues).
I'm also holding out for one of the X570 ITX mobo's, which will also take some time to drop in price. I've already got a Bitfenix Prodigy case in line, just waiting for some AMD goodness.

That's why I can't understand the crowd going, wait for the 3000 wait for the 3000? When the Zen + is real good value for money and it's bang for buck now. Whereas with our currency at the moment it's more then likely going to be expensive.

I will admit this is the boat I am currently in - upgrading my system but waiting on Ryzen 3000. Now the more I've been reading and checking prices I can get a 2600x or even 2700x for very good price and at the end of the day for what my PC will be used for - day to day office work, light video/photo editing and gaming - I'm sure the 2600x will work perfectly and the 2700x just a little better all while saving almost 50%.

Currently on a i7 2600..... the r7 2700x beats the poop out of the i7 8700 and the i7 9700 is insulting the way they obviously disabled hyperthreading so they could push in the i9..... on a sheerly personal level I hate the 9th gen chips especially with the bugs they ignored for a decade untill they had no choice any more injury added to the insult.

Even if I get a 8th or 9th gen i7 it's still double my current capability. The r7 2700x also doubles and it's R1k-R3k cheaper (combo altogether) than the intel chips depending on what you get.... there is simply no contest unless I get a good combo second hand I'm going team red end of the month when my money gets released.

Looking at the wootware bundle page for the r7 2700x again one of the RAM options is G.SKill F4-3200C14D-32GTZ TridentZ.... however neither any x470 mobo nor the ram qvl lists overlap.... only the z series mobo's seem officially compatible did wootware make an error here or are the lists simply out of date?

AMD and RAM seems needlessly complicated..... 2933 auto-clock 32GB is all I would require and apparently 2x16GB dual rank is the least painful way to do this but I don't see many 2x16GB kits....

The Trident Z models designed for Ryzen have an "R" in the model name....like GTZR. Check for those - others may work but why take the chance?
