Never been a fan of and never will be a fan of AMD is my only excuse, heh. I have an nvme in that list, just the one ssd which is on special for a bargain ... only reason I added it

Not sure your reasoning behind the anti-AMD stance. I would encourage you to take a fresh look though. What’s the cost difference between the nvme and SSD, and a 1TB nvme?

1tb nvme is 110 and I can get the 500gb ssd for 39 on special. I will look at the ryzen again, just means hella reading about it .... which is the one I should be looking at?

Probably from the bulldozer days? Who knows?

What I was suggesting was simply getting a single 1TB NVME instead of a 512GB NVME and a 512GB SSD. Not sure what the cost difference would be but you'd get the speed benefit of the NVME and have less wiring, power consumption etc.

AMD just announced the new Ryzen 5000 series which will be available from 7 November. They're a big improvement over the already excellent Ryzen 3000 series so I'd say they're worth waiting for.

What is the purpose of the PC - gaming or work?

My suggestion (and bear in mind we are still waiting for reviews of the new AMD processors) would be a Ryzen 5600X, a B550 motherboard and the 1TB NVME, and then the rest of the components you listed.

On the graphics card front, AMD is also soon to release a new GPU (the RX6000 range). That may or may not be a good buy, we don't know yet. But we do know it's release should help push prices of existing cards down so might be worth waiting for both launches before spending any money.

Pc is for an mmorpg, school and work and I need to bite the bullet really soon. Makes waiting for new releases problematic :(

Still, will do some hard reading and see if I can hold off and if it's worth holding off. Obviously if there's a huge differences in performance for price I need to know. Thanks man.

What's the budget? And what screen resolution and refresh rate?

144hz and 1ms 27" is coming same time. Budget is between 1600 - 1800 pounds. Had to shave off 900 but oh well

Okay then you do want some form of beefy GPU to keep the frames up. Here's what i built from Amazon.co.uk, assuming you don't want to wait.

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Super WINDFORCE OC 3x 8G - £469.99
Phanteks Eclipse P600S Medium Tower ATX Case with Glass Panel (Black) - £134.07
Corsair RM850x 80 PLUS Gold, 850 Watts, Fully Modular ATX Power Supply Unit - Black - £147.60
MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK Motherboard ATX, AM4, DDR4, Dual M.2, LAN, USB 3.2 Gen2, Front Type-C, Mystic Light RGB, HDMI, DisplayPort, AMD RYZEN 3000 3rd Generation - £159.95
AMD Ryzen 5 3600X Processor (6C/12T, 35 MB Cache, 4.4 GHz Max Boost) - £199.94
Noctua NH-U12S, Premium CPU Cooler with NF-F12 120mm Fan (Brown) £54.27
Crucial Ballistix BL2K8G36C16U4W 3600 MHz, DDR4, DRAM, Desktop Gaming Memory Kit, 16GB (8GB x2), CL16, White - £68.39
Crucial P1 1 TB CT1000P1SSD8 Internal Solid State Drive-up to 2000 MB/s (3D NAND, NVMe, PCIe, M.2), Black - £90.74
Seagate ST2000DM008 Internal Hard Drive – 2 TB – silver - £52.40

SUB TOTAL: £1,377.35

Windows 10 Retail license keys can be gotten from Carbonite for R99 - I use them and they work fine, so you could happily just get one of those and save yourself a ton of cash.

The parts above were a quick selection, not necessarily the best but it would certainly serve you well. Colour choices and so on are up to you and obviously changes could and possibly should be made, but that's a good idea of what you can get and that's still £400 under budget.

My situation:
PC turns on the first time maybe 50% of the time
Network adapter works about 75% of the time
CPU is 10 years old

I'm still gonna wait for Ryzen 5000 before getting an upgrade :p Even if my PC dies tonight I'll read some books or something.

As for the performance to price, the IPC (instructions per clock - read, overall efficiency) of the new 5000 series CPUs is up to 19% better over the previous gen. That's a massive uplift and would seem to be worth the wait, assuming independent tests match AMDs claims.

Don't know why you would feel this way. When the new AMD Ryzen 5000 series comes out, Intel will literally be the inferior processors in every single way.

Already, the AMD processors run cooler and quieter, and consume much less energy. They are already faster at heavily multithreaded tasks. Soon they will be faster at everything, while still being cooler and quieter.

Literally no reason to buy Intel in the future, unless you already have an Intel board and just want to upgrade.

That's going to be an interesting thing to check out - the 5600X is priced 50% higher than the 3600. Will it be worth the money with 9% higher boost and the better IPC?

I'm thinking the 5000 series CPU's AMD are launching are not the ones a value-conscious buyer would want (besides the 5900X and 5950X, probably) - the better value would come from non-X parts. Whether or not that's worth the wait, that's another question.

Agreed.

AMD knows they have the best products now, so they can charge the highest prices. I'm not going to upgrade until next year, but I'll upgrade my graphics card first (currently running a 1070 8GB, will wait for the $400 AMD and Nvidia cards to come out)

AMD is still the cheaper option when you factor in motherboard pricing, but yea, not quite the value option they once were. Then again, if they're better at everything, it's hard to argue against it. Currently only X parts announced, not sure that I'd go for a non-X part anyway, unless they did something special with the pricing.

^ That is the kinda thing that is gold for someone not in the know about a particular product .... just you guys chatting. I'll think things through tonight and see if I can hold off a month or 2 (going to be bloody hard!). Until then, I'll keep my options more open.

Can anyone here who's running 2 FULL-length GPU's in a chassis please let me know which chassis you have?

I'm looking for Chassis for 2 full-length cards (1080ti's ) but i'm struggling to find ones, even ATX, that seem to fit it just by browsing on the Net. So I'm hoping someone her with experience in them will know what works well.

Is it the drive cage getting in the way? Phanteks extends the PSU shroud and mounts 3.5" drives in that shroud (2.5" drives get mounted on the back of the motherboard tray). That seems to be their approach even on their affordable cases.

For reference, I have an Evolv e-atx case and it's mostly empty :)

They're competing with themselves mostly...I'm thinking for people buying new, Zen 2 is going to be quite compelling for gaming at 1440p and above. So the motherboard pricing isn't really an issue.

Steve just released a video that kind of speaks to where money is best spent. The 200 dollar 3600 makes the 10900K and 3950X look like a definite waste of money at higher resolutions (gaming only) even paired with a 3080. I'm guessing the 5000 series parts are going to have a similar challenge justifying their pricing.

Yea a 3600 is perfect for gaming right now. However, this is a work and gaming rig, so a couple extra cores and higher clocks could be useful. Also, we expect games to take better advantage of more cores so the extra would provide longevity.
