I have been reading up a bit on RSSI, RSRP and RSRQ etc - and yes I think these are just some of the factors at play - it's not the be all and end all of download/upload performance. I'm still a newbie at the technical info but learning more each day - so not really competent to comment - so take my comments with a pinch of salt :-)

Mind sharing your links if you found them worthwhile?

How do some users get 75Mbps d/l and many others like myself only 25Mbps d/l.
It seems if Telkom have different speeds in differnt areas.
Do any other users with perfect signal experience the same?

Through sharing our experiences this exact topic is now in the limelight.

Firstly, one needs to know what the capability of the cell tower is to which you're connecting. As per TJB's posts, his rooftop cell tower is limited to 30Mbps. My own tower is limited to 100Mbps (remember we're taking per connection, not backhaul). There is no way of knowing this information except by gathering user reports.

Many cell towers are being upgraded to 100Mbps (LTE Cat 3) specifically by Telkom - because they've identified LTE as a viable and profitable infrastructure unlike their ADSL exchanges. In the medium term the next upgrade steps will be to 150Mbps (LTE Cat 4) then 300Mbps (LTE Cat 5). I'm not certain what MTN and Vodacom's plans are. Long term the case for micro and picocells will become bigger business e.g. Poynting's Mantis product.

I'm personally still trying to understand the mix of RSSI, RSRP and RSRQ as speed/connection determinants. Obviously so many other factors play a role such as RF landscape (interference) and physical landscape (reflection).

I've personally attained > 70Mbps with LOS to my own cell tower at ~1.36km. Others aren't getting half that speed at 800m, while others are getting > 85Mbps at 2.3km.

By using an outdoor antenna you improve your connection and stability. If you're getting pretty good signal with your device's internal antennas, then you may be happy with that and not want to spend cash on an outdoor antenna solution. However, the proof is in this very thread (except TJB :p) that outdoor antennas can greatly improve your speeds and overall experience.

I'm personally on LTE for 10 months and counting with no ADSL fallback. For the purposes of this thread, I would have loved to run parallel setups - one with internal antennas and one with outdoor antennas - and report back with my experiences of both; sadly I only have hindsight now so it's water under the bridge.

Someone recently commented that we seem caught up in a trivial speed competition. However, speed does matter depending on what you expect from the Internet. A 50Mbps connection can serve multiple 1080p YouTube streams while someone else uses the internet to surf; for a 25Mbps connection you might only be able to do one 1080p stream at a time. Others want fast downloads but this will only "really" matter when we have access to much bigger mobile data packages.

My own household caters for 3 wireless access points, 1 wireless bridge, 4 smart phones, 2 tablets, 1 laptop, 2 desktops, 2 Apple TV's, a PS3 and VoIP. VoIP happens via Switch Telecom as well as FaceTime Audio. So the demands on own home network are quite substantial. Only LTE can serve my current needs and I personally want the fastest connection possible.

Edit: for the record I believe BitCo could also serve my needs.

I have a B593s-601 and extremely slow upload. Speeds like 20/0.5 d/u

Taped to window I got 20/0.5 stable instead of 4-5/0.5. Poor upload is killing me.
With a test of Poyting PBN-XPOL-06 antenna I could get 20-29/6Mbit. But I would need 15m cables. Will that work?

Your signal quality is indeed atrocious (signal quality especially!) and a perfect case for a good outdoor antenna. Are you saying you actually tested the XPOL-06 and those were your results?

- Do you have LOS with the XPOL-06 you want to use?
- Why the need for 15m cable?
- Can you not locate the LTE router where the antenna would be installed, obviously inside the house?

With the moderate speeds you've indicated, I think if you can avoid any more signal loss that is first prize i.e. try for 5-7m cable and locate the LTE router as close as possible to the outdoor antenna.

I don't mind sharing at all but there was nothing particularly useful for experts like yourself. For newbies like me one can just google RSSI, RSRP, etc....but here's one link for the basics if anyone is interested. Otherwise - google is your friend but I havn't found any detailed information on how one can improve download speeds etc - it's more info on what the terminology means.

In terms of those signal bars we see on our LTE routers, here is a very nice nice explanation I thought would be worth posting:

The signal improves as it moves to Zero (0) dBm. The list below gives an indication of what signal is acceptable:
-100 to -95 dBm is adequate for communication ONLY in rural or remote areas where there are not many users on the towers – people can even connect with -100dBm, but because noise ratio is low.
-90dBm is good comms (in cities and built up areas where there are many users on the towers)
-85 dBm to -90 dBm is very good
-85 dBm and better is excellent

You will not get better than -51 dBm.

Interesting - you're referring to RSRP here hey? So my -72 is excellent then. I guess it's a sign of signal strength (mine definitely improved with the installation of external antennas).

I'm hoping to hear from the Trustees in my complex soon regarding the trimming of the tree - then I can reposition my antennas towards the 100meg pipe tower and do some more tests.
 
Referring to both RSSI and RSRP.

The really interesting part is those guys getting insane speeds with only moderate signal levels. These are the other "mysterious" factors contribution to one's link quality.

I have the Huawei B593-601. With the paddle antennas using Telkom Mobile:

Got two bars and the downloads speed weren't stable.

Then bought the Poynting A-XPOL-0001, placed it on my roof, and viola!

4 bars, very stable download speeds!

I know this antenna is only medium gain and not directional, but the improvement is amazing! Also, according to the box 2300 MHz is also not supported. I live about 800m from the tower, but down in a valley. I suspect having the antenna at a higher elevation makes all the difference.

I've been wondering about Biggles190's results with the XPOL-0001. Obviously he is getting gain over 2300MHz and yet the XPOL-0001 doesn't have 2300MHz support...WRONG. I've chatted to Poynting about this and there's an error on the poyntingcommercial site (and brochure) but not on the antennas.co.za site.

The XPOL-0001 therefore supports all networks. I'll update post # 1 accordingly.

Edit: Poynting have updated their sites and released a new v4 brochure.

I'm not sure which base stations "start" with LTE...presumably 30Mbps.

From another thread which may help:

I've learned that the following speeds may apply to SA base stations:

- 2Mbps
- 4Mbps
- 8Mbps
- 12Mbps
- 14 Mbps
- 20Mbps
- 30Mbps
- 40Mbps
- 60Mbps
- 100Mbps

Some of the low speeds come as a surprise but might explain performance in some locations. Congestion would be an even bigger issue here.

Disclaimer: source is a bit ambiguous whether figures are channel bandwidth or user bandwidth.

Also relevant:

The new "100Mbps class" is well-publicised, but do we know that the "old" limit was 30Mbps ?
I've only ever seen Teejaybee refer to the 30Mbps limit based on his discussions with Telkom reps.
Does the "old" limit relate at all to LTE Category 2 at 50Mbps ?

Interesting... The box on my XPOL-001 says its operating frequencies are 790-960, 1710-2170 and 2500-2700 MHz. Weird!

I would post a picture of it but once again it says I don't have permission!
