The normal version is not free either, it's unavailable.
EDIT: Normal version became available again and my order went through. Refresh the page and keep trying, the site is a bit tired.

The original Death Stranding is long not sold any more, it is only the Director's Cut. Don't be concerned, the Director's Cut is an additional content pack in any case. I can only think that the repository is a bit messed up on Epic. You will get the Director's Cut.

If I go to the store page I don't even see the Free section anymore. But searching for this title works. The original link to the directors cut also wants me to pay for it.

Original is back up on the site for free, just keep trying the page.
Keep refreshing the page until it shows as available.

I would be surprised by that. You can only purchase the Director's Cut, digitally, everywhere else. The latest updates also only supported the Director’s Cut. Why Epic have both versions in their library is strange, unless it is promotional to upgrade to the Director’s Cut which adds some odd things to make the game more appealing to the wider audience.
The second game has been announced, so is a movie in the works. A movie is also odd though, since the game is a cinematic experience, but I guess not everyone is playing the game and that they need something to bridge the gap between the two games to sell more copies on the second game’s release.

If you read the description on the base game, it actually matches all the features on the dc listing so yeah, looks like a inventory balls up.

I can't check it up all over, but on SteamDB it shows that the original has been delisted since March 30, in which it was replaced by the Director's Cut (and the DLC option to upgrade to the Director's Cut).
Epic does list both. Something tells me that everyone will be upgraded to the Director's Cut, or those with the original will get the DLC upgrade.
