I'm struggling to understand Parnell's inclusion. He always seems to give away big overs at the most crucial times of the game. Maybe it is just my?

Agree 100% on Parnell, yes, he can win you a match by picking up 5/10 or score 50 from 25/30 balls. But he can also go for 7/8/9 rpo. I honestly had high hopes for Parnell after his u19 return. I thought he would become a solid number 5/6 all rounder in the squad.
Miller and Albie Morkel are the same, they just can't get consistency in their performances. We are so desperate to get a Klusener in the batting lineup, but reality is that we don't have someone in SA. Honestly, IPL is not a measuring stick.

The biggest problem SA will face in this world cup is how they handle selection on our no. 7
1) De Kock
2) Amla
3) Du Plessis
4) AB ( I ****ing hope he comes in at 4 and not 5 as has been the case recently)
5) Duminy
6) Rillie / Miller
7)
8) Philander / Abbott
9) Steyn
10) Morkel
11) Tahir
What this effectively means is we have 4 specialist bowlers ( Steyn, Morkel, Philander, Abbott, Tahir) and our fifth bowler is comes in at 7. Is our 5th bowler a specialist? Parnell at 7 is one position to high and that means we have a very long tail, something that I want us to avoid at all costs.
The alternative is to play Behardien at 7 and use him , Rillie ( if he is playing ) and Duminy to bowl 10 overs.. However, if we go with this option, I would drop Tahir and go with four specialist seamers ( Steyn, Morkel, Philander, Abbott, Parnell). I don't think it's wise to bowl 20 overs between ( Tahir / Duminy / Behardien) in Australia.
However, expecting part timers to make a valued contribution with the ball is raising the expectations to high. If one of them go to the cleaners, we don't have a sixth bowler to come up with.
How SA handle this predicament and indeed how players roles are defined will determine our success in the world cup.
We have world class players, for me, its all about getting the balance right and ensuring the players know what to do and what is expected of them.

Kyle Abbott was in Australia recently. He failed to produce in conditions tailor-made for seamers. Failed against lowly Zimbabwe too!
How can this even be close to a 50-50 decision. The man has played 9 matches (including 4 vs Zimbabwe and 2 vs Pakistan at home both yielding just 3 wickets in 42 overs), taken just 5 wickets, average 54 and has a strike-rate of 75 - he needs way more than one match just to earn a single wicket!
Parnell&Phangiso plus Farhaan the specialist batsman have all proven to be more effective ODI wicket-takers and more efficient bowlers than Kyle Abbott. Why should there be questions about any of them when ALL question should really be directed towards KYLE ABBOTT. How do you think Tsotsobe&McLaren feel knowing that a bowler who in 9 matches have proven to be way inferior than them at this level and in this format has been selected? How on earth can that be justified?
Rory Kleinveldt for crying out loud was deemed to be rubbish and written off despite having done much better than Abbott.
THE ONLY QUESTIONABLE SELECTION IN THIS SQUAD IS KYLE ABBOTT BUT NO ONE WANTS TO ADMIT IT!
I wonder what those selections being questioned (Farhaan, Parnell&Phangiso) have in common in comparison to Kyle Abbott? Yes, welcome to South Africa!
It's a pity those who came out flying with jpegs comparing Bavuma to Rossouw/SvZ have lost that ability when it comes to Kyle Abbott's stats in comparing his ODI stats to virtually every other bowler possible for the CWC squad. Such a pity!

Easy, dude...you're going to blow a gasket. Something your stats won't give you is any personal knowledge of why a selection was made...you're basing your frustration on figures when selectors have personal insights (as well as historical performances) to go on. Unless you get Andrew Hudson (shout out to my hometown boyo!) to come onto MYBB and give you the selection panel's view, you're never going to understand certain things and will keep jumping to conclusions.
For me, I would have chosen Tsotsobe over Abbott but it's not as clear cut a choice as you make it out to be. Every time I've seen Abbott play, he's been an absolute pro...focused, intent and completely in the game. I've seen him get hit for boundaries and come back and bowl a good ball after. Tsotsobe I've seen take wickets and bowl really well...I've also seen him take a clattering and he sometimes doesn't seem to know what to do about that (if you look at his bowling history, you'll see a lot of spells of less than 10 overs).
So it's closer than you think from a bowling point of view...the fielding and batting counts in Abbott's favour so maybe this is more 50-50 than you want it to be?

The choice of abbot above tsotsobe is about role. Abbot was chosen as a death bowler. Lopsy can not bowl at death we have seen this time and time again. To balance the bowling attack they needed a specialist death bowler and abbot is that guy.
You cannot carry 2 guys who can't bowl at the death in the squad and we already have Big Vern.
As for parnell its a toss whether you take him or McClaren. Neither really convinces. McClaren is the relatively safe steady choice while parnell on his day could win you a game. They decided to take a gamble on parnell lets see if it works.

As for partimers not being able to make a valid contribution Dhoni used a lot of part timers in India's game plan to win the last wc. Different conditions but point still stands they can succeed if used wisely.

Philander's selection meant you can only go with only one other seamer who can bat and Parnell's left hand got him the nod.
But there's no doubt about it, McLaren is one of the best ever. What makes things worse is that there was a time when we were not su sure about our batting and bowling stocks, and players wer eemigrating. With McLaren playing so well in County cricekt he was in line to rep England. He was coaxed to came back, bent his back and done as well as he can and now he's lost out to two inferior players - Abbott&Parnell. Does that make sense to anyone?
If you recall correctly Philander had played numerous times as an ODI bowler without really impressing. Over two series NZ&AUS (those conditions for the WC) he's swung the decision, and onsidering it happened at a time when Steyn&Morkel were absolute rubbish with the ball, it made the decision really hard to overlook someone who had seriously outperformed 2 of the 3 bowlers(including Tsotsobe) who were not only the best LOI bowlers in SA but the world for a long time.
When Tsotsobe recovered (bearing in mind he was never dropped, just out due to injury), McLaren was having a shocker .... and so were Abbott&Parnell if we must be honest. But to complicate matters further so were Steyn&Morkel. So who do you drop for Tsotsobe? McLaren was dropped - just as Rory Kleinveldt was for that shocker against India in England - and it appears they've gone for the youth of Abbott&Parnell as the foundation for the future attack of SA.
As far as I'm concerned Abbott is 28 soon, been rubbish apart from his Test debut and he'll have to bowl way better than Steyn in all formats for any SA cricekt fan to trust that he deserves a future in the team.
