The Renault Kwid Thread (Kwid Lovers)

I'm in Mauritius and judging by the cars weight spec they have the Indian version here. It has ABS and Airbags?

Did we get a scaled down version of the Indian one? It's like ZA actually asks for the cheapest rubbish they can find... there should really be a law that if it doesn't have at least 2 airbags and ABS it's not a legal sale in ZA.
Lol no. Cars worked fine without airbags or ABS for the last 100years. Its luxury items and if you want it you can pay for it. There's no need to make more restrictive laws.
If you use the cars ABS it is probably because you are driving like an aswhole and you should retink your driving habits and keep a safe following distance. Otherwise you will need those airbags and that isn't going to be fun.

You're joking about the ABS right?

How many times have you had to use your ABS?

In 17 years, twice. Once on an extremely wet road and the guy in front of me slammed anchors for no reason and the second time was testing it out. But it was needed for the first one definitely and it's good to have, nothing like feeling the foot being massaged. My first car didn't have it, but I definitely needed it as that's how I wrote it off :-(

No in the last 10years I drove a old golf mk2 and a corsa without ABS. Theres no need for it if you are a competent driver. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up when you brake too hard. If you don't have it you should simply not brake too hard. Keep a safe following distance.

There's no need for a seatbelt 99% of the time, but you know what it's that 1% you need it that you'll be glad it's there.

Totally agree. We shouldn't in force that with laws either same as airbags. If some person want to win a Darwin award let them. We have become a society that overly nannies the stupid and this is keeping everyone else back and imposing unesasery restrictions on our freedoms.

Wow! - that's 1,059 retards that have given up the will to live by buying either the Kwid or the Go - or is it 99.9% fleet sales to the car hire companies that have accounted for these totals?

Our Kwid II is not the same death-trap is the Kwid I, and the Kwid III does even better.

Our Kwid II is not the same death-trap is the Kwid I, and the Kwid III does even better.

Global NCAP has crash tested three variants of the Renault Kwid, but has awarded all of them 0/5 stars for AOP (Adult Occupant Protection). Note that all cars were tested at 64 km/h.

Following is the summary of the Kwid’s crash test results.

Kwid (I) without airbag

This Kwid was among the first batch of production cars, and was tested without any safety features (i.e) not even the optional driver airbag was installed on it.

Unsurprisingly, it scored 0/5 in AOP, but fared 23.89/49 for COP (Child Occupant Protection) which translates to a score of 2/5.

The bodyshell integrity was rated as unstable, and Global NCAP says it will be unable to withstand further loading.

The report notes that protection offered to the driver head and chest was poor and the passenger’s chest received marginal protection.

The passengers’ knees could impact with dangerous structures in the dashboard, the report concludes.

Over 18,091 units of this Kwid were produced.

Kwid (III) without airbag

This batch of the Kwid was produced from April 2, 2016, and over 5,000 units have been made.

Global NCAP states that Renault calls this version “an updated evolution of the Kwid”, which was supposed to have better safety levels. However, this version too scored 0/5 in AOP and 2/5 in COP.

According to Global NCAP, the structure did not collapse however it is still unstable, and cannot withstand further loadings.

The testing agency notes –

It was possible to see the structural reinforcements implemented in this version of the Kwid, but when Global NCAP checked the left (passenger) side, there were no reinforcements. The structure was reinforced only on the driver side.

Kwid (III) with driver airbag

The structurally reinforced Kwid was also tested with a driver airbag, which is provided as an optional extra on the top-end variant.

However, this version also scored zero stars in AOP and two stars in COP. The protection offered to the driver’s head and neck by the airbag was good, the report states.

According to Global NCAP, Renault will implement further improvements to the Kwid and Global NCAP will test these new evolutions in forthcoming crash tests.

An improved version of the Kwid (Kwid IV) has already entered production on May 9, 2016, the testing agency states.

Kwid (IV) with driver airbag

Results for India’s ‘car of the year’, the Renault Kwid, surprised and disappointed Global NCAP.

After poor results earlier this year, and following Renault’s latest set of improvements, the Kwid was assessed again in the frontal impact test and the model still offers just one star for adult occupant protection.

In its standard version, the Renault Kwid (in India) is offered without airbags and has been tested by Global NCAP in the past. The basic version of the car scored zero stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection.

The latest version and the most highly equipped safety levels, includes an airbag only for the driver and a seat-belt pre-tensioner for the driver’s seat. During the test this version still showed high chest deflection, explaining the one star rating in the driver seat.
