The rich & selfishness

Also you cannot tell people to stop "breeding", that's life and it won't ever stop, but you cannot blame the children for ending up in that situation, you should want to help them, THEY ARE ONLY CHILDREN.

Wouldn't hurt to adopt the same policy as China with regards to "breeding". People in South Africa live in poverty but still continue to have more than 2 kids.

Two years ago we(my dad and i) contributed towards and assisted in physically building three rdp homes. 4 months later these families were back in the shacks and were either renting out the house or sold it altogether. Can we really do more than that?

So we changed our approach. we buy 100 liters of milk and 100 loaves of bread and packs of sweeties for the kids every second weekend and give those to different areas. Even then we have people trying to con us. People trying to get more than 1 loaf and 1 milk which they then resell to those that didnt get. Lilith, i've seen good intentions go horribly wrong. One incident, after giving out the milk and bread, 3 idiots tried to hijack us. An hour earlier i handed one of the hijackers’ milk and bread. i ended up shooting 1 of them ( not fatally) the other two just ran.

You have a good heart Lilith but in my experience that can get you killed.

Things like that happens simply because there is more bad in the world than good.

But I cannot ever ignore the fact that the children I know of are suffering... So I try to do what I can for them.

The Ripple Effect

I am relieved to see that there is compassion among the intellectuals and self-sufficient

if only this was true of communities today:

the earth is His and the fullness thereof and they that dwell therein

from Him, to Him and through Him are all things

and they met daily in eachother's homes, broke bread and had all things in common and God added to their number daily those that were given the Spirit of Grace

there was no lack and not one feeble among them

if everyone contributed to lifting another to a better conscientious life-style, it would influence the communities and the nation as a whole, starting from one person, each person, doing a little, just one tiny bit of influence out of intuitive kindness instead of tossing a R5 to encourage vagrancy.

why not foster a child instead of getting another dog and having beer guzzlers around every other night?

why not invite a poorer family over occassionally for a meal and facilitate the conversation with advise and kindness and influence?

why not employ someone to do a small job for you and let them learn a trade with you and give them referals?

small things done by individuals here and there have ongoing ramifications, The Ripple Effect!

don't want to blow my own trumpet but I can tell you of the experiences I have had while opening my home and spare time up to helping others out of the quagmire, some respond and blossom and exceed your expectations and others fall deliberately back into it a few times as if on a self-destructive course with unresolved issues...

there can be many reasons why people are in those circumstances in the first place, sometimes by no direct cause of their own, sometimes by living recklessly, sometimes it is a good thing for people to endure hardships to learn and overcome and have empathy

"a righteous man is kind to animals", so when and if you can, do what you can in any circumstance to be appreciative of the animals that are subjective to the human dominance on this planet.

out of the fulness of a man's heart flow the issues (and influences) of Life

you cause eternal ramifications by your deeds and lack of deeds, good and bad

do NOT despise those that are deemed "lesser" or "worser" than you

be grateful and know that you did not predetermine even your own birth, how dare you decide what is really yours, it all belongs to the Creator, be good stewards and you will be rewarded

That's not the point, you're supposed to feel sorry for someone else, when you see someone in pain you're supposed to feel a bit of that pain as well... We are not emotionless creatures.

Welsyn begin by die huis.

No matter how drunk they are, dirty they are etc when someone asks you for a R5 and you have enough you should give. It's not about what they do with the money it's the fact that you helped that person. yes, there are some people that abuse the begging thing but still, that shouldn't change how you feel about helping someone.

'n R5 is tog niks...

Also you cannot tell people to stop "breeding", that's life and it won't ever stop, but you cannot blame the children for ending up in that situation, you should want to help them, THEY ARE ONLY CHILDREN.

I honestly find behaviour like this disgusting.

Some people would help a street dog but won't even do anything for the man living on the street...

Says alot about some people hey...

Sorry for the Afrikaans, but I felt like typing differently today.

teach a man to fish, don't toss him a fish

encourage self-sufficiency not vagrancy

if each person helped one willing person, it would have a Ripple Effect, but we are all to self-indulging to care and it is easier to toss a coin to temporarily appease our conscience!

Ek sou in Afrikaans beantwoord het maar ek is nie verseker dat jy my sal verstaan nie, Afrikaans is my tweede taal en as ek Afrikaans spreek, is dit Kaapse Afrikaans. Soe ons los maar daai idee. :)

As I have said, yes we know people abuse the little you do for them but that is not what my intention in all my posts were, you seem to misinterpret me though.

The point I am trying to bring across is not handing out money to people etc, that is not even the important factor in this.

I was referring to lack of compassion for someone else from people. The fact that some people cannot even feel a bit of pain on someone else's behalf, thaty is what drives you to help someone else.

Compassion is what makes you want to help someone when you can, it's what makes you want to give someone a R5 or bread and water when you yourself do not have enough.

Compassion is wanting to tell a child to be strong when you so them thin, dirty, with broken clothes and sadness in their eyes.

Compassion is what makes you say, hey wait, this guy might be drunk but I feel that I want to help him, even though the fact is that he can help himself.

It's not only about giving, but being able to be compassionate.

Love is important, love is part of compassion. And being compassionate is being able to love.

So why is it so difficult to be compassionate? Why replace love with fact?

+1000,

let him work to earn his living and he has something to be proud of,
give him everything on a silverplate then he becomes dependent on you.

erm... not "let" but "assist"

sincere help instead of miniscule donations

give-a-hand not a hand-out

if each person just took on one person as a project, imagine how that would impact a community?

"if" everyone did a little effort, (not a little donation), got involved in making a small difference to just one persona's life by influencing them, guiding them, teaching them, helping them in a practical way, what a big difference there would be!

I found a man living on the railway line, called an ambulance and followed up on him, I got another person to assist me in clothing and feeding him and finding his family and some tutoring for a skill, his name is Edward Petersen and he no longer lives like a vagrant, the only thing about him that hasn't changed is his name!

Try it, it is very rewarding to make a difference, it is soul destroying to just observe the growing desolation nad destitution and very easy to complain and criticise and condemn and have an opinion

but what impact are you having? what did you do to predetermine your life? what makes you better if you do not know what circumstances brought them to such hopelessness?

I lived in my car once, it was horrible. I am grateful and nothing I have I deserve, the Universe doesn't belong to anyone, we earn the privileges to enjoy and share it and to help eachother, we are all just stewards of the potential before us.

Be a good steward! don't waste, don't condemn and appreciate everything!

So why is it so difficult to be compassionate? Why replace love with fact?

Im sorry but I don’t see that as love. That’s creating dependence and an expectation. An expectation that every one will be a compassionate as you. So the not so privileged person depends on and expects everyone to hand over R5 every time they pass them.

I'll have a go at that one!

Trust! Humanity has reached a point where we can't even trust our own government!

Heres another situation:

I'm driving along a dark road at night. I see a lady on the side of the road having a problem with her car. Do I stop to help her? Could this be a trap? A possible hi jacking technique?

Ofcourse I could phone someone! Cops or AA! But couldn't she do that?

Society has made us the way we are! Not having compassion is not the issue here. Its whether we act on it or not! And if we do, do we come out alive?

No no no... Only the people who have no conscience and no will to help themselves will find that as a way of making money and depending on someone else. And yes, there are many of those.

I still believe that you should show compassion.

Also I agree with what Jenemesis says, my father used to ask people to do little things in the yard etc as a way of making money...

Needless to say we don't do that anymore after a little incident.

So the only way I see now is to give when i can.

Yes we all know of the schemes that happens... That's why you should be cautious, when you feel that something isn't right then you shouldn't do it.

And of course you cannot trust anyone, but why not help some? is there something wrong with that?

That's not the point, you're supposed to feel sorry for someone else, when you see someone in pain you're supposed to feel a bit of that pain as well... We are not emotionless creatures.

No we are not but I have come to the conclusion that showing compassion is seen as a sign of weakness and something to be taken advantage of.
So I'm trying to grow a thicker skin.

I wake up at 5 AM in the morning, go to Gym for an hour, go home, and take a shower and then drive 35km's to work, work 8 hours, and then go home. On the way home, I have to literally fight off people at two robots who want to wash my window, even when it's perfectly clean.

People who I've seen kicking cars that refuse to pay them for squirting dirty water on the windshield and then wiping it off for them. Do these people deserve my money?

After that, I pass a robot with people pointing at my tire, telling me that it's flat, and asking for a tip for pointing it out to me. They do this every second day. My tire is fine. ( Though I fell for this once ) Do they deserve it?

At another robot, I see a boy who's allways there, he stands at the robot, doesn't approach any cars, and doesn't make a nuicence of himself at all. Does he?

The third robot has people selling cellphone chargers, which don't even work. And if you don't pay them attention, they knock on the window. Do they?

The fourth usually has people selling fruit which has been left in the sun all day, the exact same fruit that you can buy at Pick 'n Pay for the same money, but you can be sure that it's safe. Do they?

I go home, have dinner, and perhaps watch some tv. They don't even enter my mind once I am safe in my house with three dogs to try and ward off robbers. I then browse the internet for a few hours and play a game or two if the mood strikes, and then I go to bed.

The robots are full of people trying to make a living, and I can empathise, but the ones that feel they deserve handouts from the people in their cars are the reason that I drive with my aircon on, and my music playing.

That said, I allways have some spare change for the poor man at the robot who never even comes asking.

Hehe, purchased one of those from a dude in Rivonia (forgot mine in Durbs), did not work and I was swearing as I drove down the road. Two robots or so down spot another dude selling them as well and I tell him the bloke up the road just sold me a broken charger. He tunes me no problem and gives me another one to test & takes the broken one and tells me he will sort it out with the other bloke, no charge. I was fscking gobsmacked :D

That's incredible, I would have given him some extra cash just for that :)

I was so shocked my mind went blank, I do think I managed to get a 'thank you very much' out of my lips, rest of my trip to Modderfontein was in a dazed like state :D

If he did not knock me for a six I would have given him money.

How dare you preach about what I deserve! I deserve every cent I've earned. I'm entiled to every privilage I enjoy. My parents made "the right choices", unlike most of the population who chose to sit outside with a tin cup during the day, and breed like rabbits at night. They made a bad choice, they must live with it. If I ever made a (very) bad decision, nobody's going to come to me with a few bar and tell me, "Keep your houses, cars, and boats. You made a bad decision, but we'll bail you out." They're going to gloat and enjoy watching me suffer.

Just because Africa is a third world ****hole (and knowing Africans, always will be) doesn't mean that I must fix it. Is giving more than half my income to the people who's job it is to fix Africa, not enough. You people will only be happy when everyone is poor, because sure as ****, there is no chance of communism making everyone rich.

Laugh all you want, I laugh at you naive liberals every day.

I agree with everything here, and I will join you in the laughter. These fools think they make a difference by giving a beggar R1. Pfft, really.
