Reading between the lines, I think Ronnie expected some sort of special treatment from the DA and didn't get it so got upset.

There is also a possibility that he had a physical fight with another councilor... and that generally doesn't sit well in the DA

Ronnie is also ex-MF so no surprise he's joined the ANC.

Given what they've had to deal with over the last few years, I'd be very surprised if many would vote ANC nationally either. I wold expect a number to vote ASA and the like though, just cos they don't want to vote DA

Not sure that it is really "hotly contested". The gap between the DA and the ANC was over 50 percentage points in 2021. Also as the map below shows, the DA won every single voting station within the ward. There is not a single bit of ANC strength...

This seems to be a big thing though for a ward election if even Steenhuisen and Ramaphosa went to campaign.

Also, it is a byelection which usually benefits opposition parties due to lower turnout. In this case, the opposition is the ANC.

They vote DA mostly but arent loyal DA voters. If a PA like party emerges which aims to capture the Indian vote, they will defect from DA.

MF used to win large parts of the Indian vote when Rajbansi was alive. The Tiger was somewhat similar to Gayton McKenzie.
