Looks like the rogue councillors did the cowards a huge favour, all along they had no issues with a DA speaker, but now that he has been removed they want one from a different party.

They're taking chances now.

If they were so opposed to the DA occupying both Speaker and Mayor, why didn't they propose this during negotiations or demand this kind of settlement back then?

Also,
Mashaba added that the coalition partners believed there should be a balance of power to save the coalition from outward attacks.

"The new speaker will come from the coalition partners, not the DA. We, as ActionSA, have expressed that we do not want the speaker position, so we need a candidate from the smaller parties whether it's the ACDP, FF Plus or Cope.

Magwala, what it simply means is that ActionSA is sitting there, seething, waiting for rogue councillors to do what they have always desired.

If I were the DA I would send that intrepid explorer back in as speaker candidate and see what they would do, very pathetic from Mashaba.

That's ASA's reasonable explanation they always use against DA.

But I can see why they voted against it since voting for it went against the agreement itself which defined that DA gets Speaker and Mayor and against the coalition. This links back to the point I made, if ASA and others had such opposition against this, why didn't they raise this during negotiations, why be quiet about it? But now, when JHB is on the brink of being lost to the ANC, now they want to settle scores.

On Thursday, the DA confirmed it was working on a rebuttal to Johnson’s piece, but Steenhuisen’s Chief of Staff Ryan Smith told Daily Maverick there would be a congress next year where elected members of the party would decide who leads it. Smith said DA leaders could elect leaders during elections, “not commentators on Politicsweb”.


“We don’t take to heart the views of opinionistas such as RW Johnson. I would hardly regard him as a credible or reliable political commentator,” said Smith. “Ultimately, it is the delegates of the DA’s federal congress who decide who leads the party, and not commentators on Politicsweb. I would also add that John Steenhuisen was elected with an 80% majority in the previous congress in spite of Mr Johnson’s uninformed predictions,” said Smith. DM

Yup. Sad, really. I've been thinking about what ASA said a while back about their 2024 aims. Their aim is to become the second biggest party in SA. From a distance, it might seem reasonable.

But zoom in and that says that their true intention is not to completely unseat the ANC, but to rather unseat the DA as OO.

It's just politics, the same Steenhuisen would make a meal out of it if it was an ANC politician.

I have never understood that logic, the whole process of being the government starts with forming a party, getting enough votes to be in Parliament, then overtaking the other parties, including the official opposition and finally the governing party.

Having ambitions of being the official opposition is just part of the process, all parties have one ambition, to govern with an absolute majority, no one is going in there to assist the DA to unseat the ANC, everyone wants the main prize, and that does not include pesky coalition partners who question your decisions.

Mashaba was a disappointment when he quit the DA. Imagine where the DA would be now if Maimane and Mashaba didn't quit. Same applies to Athol Trollip.

Well, he was a disappointment in the DA to be fair. Pandering to the likes of the EFF all the time. That’s what started his downfall.

Maimane could talk. Not lead. So he had to go.

Trollip, could have done a lot on NMB. But coalition politics in its early days was just chaos.

Going by what I've heard him say in recent interviews regarding what he believes in, I don't think he was the complete best fit for the DA per se.

Every party aims to be the majority party, it's plain weird to declare that you'll want to be/aim for OO instead of first place. You don't see other parties like EFF, COPE, UDM, IFP, VF+ doing it?

It's like a rugby team declaring they'll go for second place instead of the cup.
