The DA also does not understand that they are not the anointed opposition party
Ok, so while I don't completely agree with their stance, I can see why they do act that way.
They've been SA's official opposition since 1999, they've been OO for 23 years.
They're the only other party in SA that governs a province on its own, the WC. They've been in charge of the WC for 13 years.
They're used to the "man vs world" fight. Because before 2019 there were no other opposition parties to actually give them competition or pose a threat to the ANC as they did. They were the only party that effectively ruled a province showing they have the potential for being a competent national gov.
But now with the likes of ASA growing exponentially and eating directly into their voter base or having their own members defect to ASA or having to work in coalitions they can't completely dominate, is setting off alarm bells with them. They're going into much-unexplored territory a lot like the ANC is.
The ANC is bracing themselves to potentially go to the opposition benches in 2024. Many senior ANC members have echoed that unless something changes drastically (which they know won't happen), they'll lose in 2024.
The DA is worried because now there is another viable opposition party they have to compete with and also possibly for the OO title, where they're used to having a monopoly on opposition affairs. They're also warming up to the fact that they'll probably never solely govern the country and will have to go into coalition in 2024 if everything works well and the ANC is weakened enough to get thrown out.
So I think it's a fear of the unknown as well as knowing they have actual competition now.
they complained about ASA splitting the opposition vote again after the Tshwane by election.
Yeah, it was a bit stupid.
