When the March results are out April 1st/2nd we can revisit & see if the Civic perhaps improved ever so slightly.

True, it's a pretty decent car when you take a closer look at it, the quality is not bad at all, good value for money.

Yes. That's also why Toyota stopped the Camry.

These Passat/Fusion/Camry type cars are just too close to the big three.

But then you are comparing new to used, and you can get a used Passat/fusion for even less as they probably lose a little more on trade in.
 
Hmmm. Was busy looking at what you can get for the price of a Passat and that BMW X1 looks very nice. Has it all. Handling, interior and practicality.

That's a valid comparison to make. There is nothing wrong with used cars. The idea isn't to complete in a race to the bottom and buy the cheapest thing you can get, but rather to buy the best car that your budget would allow.

According to the ou toppie they are only going to focus on SUV type cars going forward in SA. So I guess the RCZ was the last exciting car they sold here then. Maybe there is hope to get some sporty type models from them badged with a blitz in the future.

South Africa’s 10 best-selling bakkies of March 2017

The sales figures for the third month of 2017 are in and once again show that the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie is an exceedingly close one.

As usual, we’ve taken a closer look at the sales figures to identify the 10 best-selling bakkies of March 2017.

So, what happened last month? Well, the Toyota Hilux retained top spot, edging the second-placed Ranger by just 213 units.

The Nissan NP200, meanwhile, climbed one place to third, with the Isuzu KB likewise moving up one to fourth. That left the Nissan NP300 dropping two spots to fifth, despite another impressive showing (1 118 units) in March.

The Chevrolet Utility held onto sixth place, while the new Nissan Navara made an appearance in seventh, with 304 units registered (which isn’t a bad effort, considering it was launched mid-month in three double-cab variants only).

The Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up thus fell one place to eighth, with the Volkswagen Amarok again taking ninth ahead of the Mahindra Scorpio Pik-Up. That means there’s no room for the Mahindra Bolero (84), Mitsubishi Triton (48), Mazda BT-50 (35) or Fiat Fullback (19) in March.

Naamsa: March 2017 – Finally, some growth

Commenting on the new vehicle sales statistics for the month of March 2017 – released today for public consumption on the website of the Department of Trade & Industry – Naamsa said that the positive trend in new vehicle sales had been maintained with sales in all four sectors reflecting a year-on-year improvement.

This despite a reduced contribution from the car rental sector.

In the event, March 2017 aggregate new vehicle sales at 48 534 units had increased by 1 020 units or 2,1% from the 47 514 vehicles sold in March last year. Contrary to general expectations, March 2017 export sales at 25 020 had registered a decline of 2 700 vehicles or a fall of 9,7% compared to the 27 720 vehicles exported in March last year.

Overall, out of the total reported industry sales of 48 534 vehicles, an estimated 42 772 units or 88,1% represented dealer sales, 6,7% represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3,0% to government and 2,2% to industry corporate fleets.

The March 2017 new car market at 31 034 units reflected a gain of 644 cars or an improvement of 2,1% compared to the 30 390 new cars sold in March last year. The car rental industry had accounted for an estimated 9,0% of new car sales in March 2017, however, the rental industry’s share was probably understated since it excluded estimates of BMW SA and Mercedes-Benz car rental sales.

Domestic sales of industry new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini buses at 14 882 units during March reflected an marginal improvement of 169 units or a gain of 1,1% compared to the 14 713 light commercial vehicles sold during the corresponding month last year.

Sales of vehicles in the medium and heavy truck segments of the industry had recorded fairly strong gains and at 833 units and 1 785 units, respectively, reflected an increase of 84 units or 11,2% in the case of medium commercial vehicles and, in the case of heavy trucks and buses, an improvement of 123 vehicles or a gain of 7,4% compared to the corresponding month last year.

Industry new vehicle exports had come in, for the second month in succession, at the lower end of expectations and at 25 020 units exported during March 2017 reflected a surprisingly large decline of 2 700 units or a fall of 9,7% compared to the 27 720 vehicles exported in March last year.

Naamsa added that it was “unable to provide any meaningful projections” for the year at this stage, announcing that it had suspended such projections in light of recent political events, which it said “could potentially result in far-reaching consequences for the South African economy”.

SA’S 10 BEST-SELLING PASSENGER CARS OF MARCH 2017

March 2017’s aggregate new vehicle sales in South Africa came in at 48 534 units, an increase of some 2,1% over the same month last year.

As always, it’s interesting to take a look at what’s happening in terms of individual model sales. So, we’ve examined the figures released by Naamsa, and picked out the ten best-selling passenger vehicles for the month (also, be sure to check out the 10 best-selling bakkies).

One must bear in mind that certain importers – such as Hyundai and Kia – do not submit individual model sales figures, instead only disclosing aggregate sales stats. Mercedes-Benz, too, has taken a similar stance, with BMW SA recently joining its German rival in reporting one aggregate sales number in terms of passenger car sales.

So, what happened in the third month of 2017? Well, the top three remained unchanged, which means the Volkswagen Polo Vivo and regular Polo (the latter now available in R-Line trim) took first and second respectively, while Toyota’s combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales) stayed in third.

The Toyota Fortuner, however, climbed one place to fourth, and the Ford Fiesta one to fifth, with the Toyota Etios dropping two spots to sixth. The Ford EcoSport moved up two places to seventh, with the Toyota RAV4 also climbing two to eighth.

The Ford Everest enjoyed a particularly strong month, making an appearance in ninth, with the Volkswagen Golf (its facelift is just around the corner) also returning to round out the table in tenth.

Other bits and bobs

Other interesting figures from March include the fact that Alfa Romeo registered 29 units of its new Giulia, while Ford moved 250 Figo models (and a mere 36 Kugas).

Chevrolet managed 146 Trailblazer units, with only the Opel Astra (147) faring better within the General Motors stable. Honda’s star performer was the Brio (222), although the HR-V (152), Jazz (151) and BR-V (125) also contributed.

The bulk of Jaguar Land Rover’s sales came from the Discovery Sport (110), the outgoing Discovery (103) and the F-Pace (95), while Mazda’s best-seller in March was the CX-5 with 332 units.

Mitsubishi SA only just managed to crack three figures for the month. The Nissan X-Trail (478) narrowly missed out on a top ten spot, while sales of the Datsun GO (288) and GO+ (133) also contributed to Nissan’s passenger car total of 1 330.

Peugeot sold just 31 vehicles across the country, while Renault managed 1 431 units, with contributions from the Sandero (461), Kwid (370) and Clio (261). Suzuki’s top-seller was again the Swift (262), although the Jimny (108) also managed to reach three figures.

The new Toyota C-HR impressed in its first month on sale, with 418 registrations in March. The expanded Volkswagen Tiguan range, too, performed well, coming in at 442 units.

Yeah the safety is in check though. You are certainly better in the PVC than the Kwid or Go.
