The SA Vehicle Industry Thread

The Suzuki Grand Vitara's production ended in August 2018 according to reports - so the 1,2,3,4,5,6 sales a month should soon become 0.

Dont think FCA, Subaru and Peugeot to survive in SA any longer. It just does not make any business sense for them to be here, if sales is less than 1000 vehicles a year
Technically, Peugeot died already, but is reborn. The consortium who bought the rights for Peugeot a few years ago has sold them back to Peugeot France because they were bleeding money. So now Peugeot SA is once again a subsidiary of Peugeot France...... Won't help volumes though...

Wow, I didnt know, I think it was a Japanese group that bought the distribution right in SA. So now it is the Peugeot France again. For Saffas to change our mindset, first thing, it must be cheap to buy. Second thing is it must be sort of trendy. Think Haval.

For example, if you want Peugeot or Alfa Romeo to be accepted in SA again, you need to lower your price to even make a loss, and then get the market share. Look at Hyundai and Kai, they used to be cheap to buy, but not anymore. Because they know they got the market share and the quality/reliability perception of South African now

That model is the new 208, unfortunately it's only coming early 2020. Until this happens they will remain with sales below 100 because the current gen 208 is just too old for anyone to consider amongst the excellent rivals.

Truth be told it is an excellent car and the quality is up there, the only problem is that it is a Peugeot, the new one will suffer the same fate unless Peugeot SA takes very drastic actions. My brother owns the station wagon SUV type, I think it's the 2008, parts are still exclusive and the other day he was charged R600 for light bulbs.

Agreed, I honestly dont think there are bad cars in the market, just bad aftersales in SA. Tell that to general public in SA, if you want a new Peugeot 208 or a new VW Polo. 99% will say new Polo. Sad but true.

With good reason, can't really blame the public on that one. Peugeot, Fiat, Subaru, same Whatsapp group, they think they can just sit there and do nothing, sales will come.

Agreed, probably think our market is too small and not worth the try. I also think if there are no UK/Australia markets, there will not be a right hand drive Fiat or Peugeot in the world.

South Africans spoilt for choice when buying new vehicles

23rd May 2017

South African car buyers had access to 55 passenger car brands in 2016, with 3 458 model derivatives to choose from, says National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) executive manager Dr Norman Lamprecht.

“This afforded car buyers the widest choice to market-size ratio anywhere in the world.”

A bit of food for thought.

Biggest vehicle-exporters from South Africa in May 2019

According to Naamsa, the South African automotive industry’s May 2019 export sales registered an “unexpected decline”, reflecting a year-on-year fall of 8,8 percent, with 29 850 units shipped off during the month.

So, let’s take a look at which automakers were the biggest exporters from South Africa for the month.

In May, the Volkswagen Group retained the top spot, exporting 9 399 examples (up 127 units) of its Polo hatchback from Uitenhage. The BMW Group climbed one spot to second, with its Rosslyn plant churning out 6 628 examples of the X3 for foreign markets, representing an increase of 899 units compared with the preceding month.

Biggest exporters for May 2019:

1. Volkswagen Group: 9 399
2. BMW Group: 6 628
3. Ford Motor Company: 5 388
4. Mercedes-Benz: 3 891
5. Toyota: 3 614

Not surprised Honda didn't make the list. Bought a 2017 demo Ballade in January 2017. Worst vehicle I purchased to date. After sales service is pathetic. Dealer overfilled oil on the 15K service, had to take the vehicle back to drain the oil. On the 30K service my windscreen wiper arms were mysteriously swopped for scratched ones. On the 30K service they had to machine the front discs and replace the wiper blades. Guess what - had to wait almost two weeks for parts. Yes, you would expect them to have stock of brake pads and wiper blades :(:(:(.
Rattles from dashboard and rear seat, can hear the water leaking into the passenger side door panels. :(:(

Never a Honda again.

Where does the leaking water come from? You'll be missing out on good cars if you let one isolated incident of seemingly bad aftersales service define your whoke outlook on Honda as a brand.

When washing the vehicle can hear the drips into the door compartment. The inferior build is more evident in areas one would not normally look at when purchasing a car, under the glove compartment and under the steering column. Electrical wiring is exposed.

That is very disappointing, build quality is exactly what Honda is famous for, sorry for your troubles, that is the last thing I expect from Honda. I do recall someone also having issues with their Ballade on this forum.

SEE: BMW, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz... SA continues to build and export thousands of cars

With public holidays and an election day, vehicle sales and production were disrupted in May. Some brands still weather the challenge better than others.

Although May had its fair share of public holidays, which reduced retail automotive trading days, local vehicle assembly showed another strong performance. In May the local automotive industry built 29 850 vehicles for export.

To set that number in context, consider that total domestic demand (new vehicles bought in South Africa) totalled 40 506. The South African automotive manufacturing sector is surging to a scenario where we are building a vehicle for export, for every one and third new vehicles being bought locally.

Amongst the star performers were VW and BMW. The largest overall export volume was once again sourced from Uitenhage, where VW managed to assemble and ship 9399 Polos for export. To put that number into perspective, VW now builds and exports 38% more vehicles than it sells locally.

The near largest local vehicle exporter for May will come as a surprise. BMW had a simply phenomenal month with its X3, managing to construct and ship 6628 of these luxury mid-sized SUVs for export. It is a huge number for BMW and one which shadows its rival, Mercedes.

SA car sales: Almost 20% of Golfs sold in SA are GTIs

The Tiguan may be Volkswagen's top-selling premium model, but the Golf GTI continues to be a popular seller, making up almost 20% of Golfs sold in May!

The two top-sellers remain the automaker's entry-level Polo Vivo (2478 sold) and sixth generation Polo (1390). The Tiguan is third on the list with 536 sold in May ahead of the Golf with 383.

The Polo Sedan (65), Kombi (81), Touareg (51), Caddy (31), Caravelle (28) and Arteon (21) make up the rest of car and commercial vehicle sales for the German auto giant.

According to Volkswagen SA, of the 383 Golfs sold, 68 were GTI models translates into 17.75%, that's just under one-fifth.

South Africa's Top Selling Cars & Bakkies: Q1 2019

Which brands and, more specifically, which models are currently the most in-demand in the South African new-vehicle market? Look beyond the big numbers on the surface and a fascinating picture emerges.

The sales figures quotes in this article are sourced from Lightstone Auto and are for the first 3 months of the year. Note that certain brands' numbers (notably Hyundai and Kia) are estimates calculated from the aggregated volumes reported and financial data.

Biggest brands in the passenger vehicle market

The top 10 list in this category doesn't really yield any major surprises at the top, but what is interesting is just how tightly contested the bottom half of the table is, with all those brands selling between 3 000 and 4 000 units. The brand in 11th place, Suzuki, only just missed out on reaching the list with sales of 3 043.
