The Samsung i900 OMNIA Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

hi guys, anyone know whats the latest ROM for SA?

I also just encountered my first issue, all of a sudden the media players dont work on my Omnia. Even if I record video, camera doesnt want to playback. WMP or touch player says the file is corrupt warra warra, anyone had this issue?

Nope, I haven't had this problem. I use CorePlayer, it's awesome!!! You should try it. There is some configuration that needs doing once it's installed, but it takes less than 5 mins to do this.

I've had the Samsung Omnia for just over a week now and I am loving IT!!! I've pimped my phone so much already. Here is the list of Apps / Mods I have added to my phone:

Apps:
SPB Mobile Shell and Skins
SPB Wireless Monitor
Slide2Unlock2
SKTools
SmartReg
SPB Pocket PC Tips and Tricks
YouTubePlayer
CorePlayer 1.3
MXiT
GMail
MortScript
GS Alarm

Games:
SPB Arkaball II
SPB FreeCell
SPB MineSweeper
SPBQuadronica
SPB Sudoku
SPB BallTracker
SPB Xonix II (Not currently working as it's the VGA version)

Mods:
Free'd up 30MB on "My Device" storage using SKTools
Change default location of "My Documents" to "My Storage" (Really liked this one)
Changed the default shortcuts for buttons on the phone using SKTools

There's loads more to come, I just don't have enough spare time to get around to installing other Apps. I don't know if I'm allowed to post the links to all the above here, but if you want, I can upload them for downloading and then you can PM for details.

Kamos, u care to share, your links for your apps? PM me please, I will PM u a nice site I use. I got a great site I use but they dont have Coreplayer 1.3, or did u buy it? :)
How much free internal storage do u have now with all those apps installed?

I don't know what version I'm running. I was reading Modaco and they don't have the South African version as yet. Not interested in upgrading as yet. Might read up on the benefits of upgrading and then decide whether to upgrade.

Something is chowing my memory on my device and my storage card. I have no clue, this morning it was normal, had over 7GB on my storage and 4GB on my storage card. Now I have none, and subsequently my camera doesn't want to work (needs 5MB to work). I have a feeling it's got something to do with me moving so many folders around. I will have to do a Hard reset...sigh :-(

Anyone know if there's a fix to increase the touch screen's sensitivity? I'm terrified I'm going to crack the screen

Video

Hi there I have a Samsung i900 and I was wondering if anyone else was having problems playing videos? Not just divx but xvid, and mp4s, they play really choppy, thanks for the input, love this phone

Power

Kamos, I am also using the SPB software for my i900, but have noticed that while on the phone it says it runs out of memory and locks up. Does your do this sometimes? If not how would I go about changing the power consumption? Thanks in advance

If anyone has noticed, it seems by default that even with Wi-Fi on, applications that require internet connectivity do not use the Wi-Fi connection, but instead use the phones 3G/EGDGE/GPRS connection. Now I tried what was suggested on the ppcsg forum (below), but it doesnt work. I didn't try the instructions highlighted in blue, as I don't know where that setting is. If anyone finds the solution to this, please post it. Otherwise we r all gonna be getting very big 3G/EGDGE/GPRS data bills!

<edit>OK, apparently this vid on youtube shows u the fix. Goto Settings > Conenctions > Browser Connection > Check 'Automatically detect settings' > Click ok

Yip, this is working now. Using WiFi and not trying to establish a 3G/EDGE connection.

One irritating thing I still find is that there doesn't seem to be a way to kill the 3G/EDGE connection without turning the 'Phone' off in Wireless Manager. Am I missing something?
</edit><edit2>Opera Mini does not seem to want to use the WiFi if the phone is set to on in Wireless Manager. It will initiate a 3G/EDGE connection if the phone is set to on. That is bloody irritating! </edit2><edit3>As confirmed in this post on the blackberry forums.</>

I'm also having the same problem with Opera. It won't load webpages over wifi, unless the phone is set to off. Even then, it doesn't seem to load pages outside of my network. It does, however, load my router's login page very quickly. I'll do some more testing soon, but if anyone has a solution - speak up!

Also, does anyone know how to add applications to the slide bar on the left?
Using SPB shell and loving it :).

<edit> I've set my email to send/recv every 30 minutes. It does this, but doesn't disconnect the data connection in between. I think this is probably making unnecessary use of the battery. Is there any way to auto disconnect when idle?</edit>

PM me for app links.

Cheers,
Nick

ugh. i have a slight problem...
my omnia rings and vibrates for calls and alarms but not for text messages. i've been through the settings millions of times to try fix this with no luck... so it's obviously some software malfunction.
any ideas?
is there anyway to format and re-install the firmware or whatever its called?

I Hav'nt viewed this thread since I got my Omnia 3 months back. Had plenty of reading to do, as I did not want to ask something that's already answered.
No-Body has posted anything about bluetooth connections to Handsfree car kits yet.

In my previous car I had a Nokia handsfree car kit (bluetooth). My old nokia phone worked brilliantly on this, but when I tried the Omnia, the quality was so bad, nobody could hear a word I was saying. I could hear them perfectly though.

I bought a new Audi and spent alot of money putting in a integrated parrot bluetooth carkit. The quality was just as bad, but testing the kit with my old Nokia, the quality is perfect.

Anyone else experiencing this???

Perhaps try fiddling with the power saving features of the phone's bluetooth? If i remember correctly mine was on power saving mode by default.

How does the power saving effect the bluetooth? I know mine is def on.
Did you have a problem before and did this sort it out?

Had no issues with mine, but I imagine that power saving might be achieved by limiting signal range/power? Just a suggestion ;)

EDIT: By the looks of things only the Omnia's WiFi has a power saving mode...was thinking of my previous phone :p

just my final words on my Omnia so far.

Its an incredibly configurable device, which is sometimes cause for major headaches aswell as major pluses. for the average phone user, non techie, I DO NOT RECOMMEND getting an Omnia. You will get lost in the Windows Mobile configuration/settings/registry nightmare.
Saying that though, its a dream for techie's cause we like to fiddle and mess around. I have now 'settings'd' my Omnia perfectly for me with tons of cool apps and skins and shells, I'm enjoying it very much. However, if you not into getting down and dirty in the bowels of your phone, then dont get an Omnia, stick with Nokia. I even prefer my Nokia Maps to Garmin maps on the Omnia. Its just way easier to get going and simple to use, and works very well.

Omnia wifi issue

Hi

I recently went from HTC Tytn II to a Omnia. Everything is working fine except the irritating vodafone live junk they put on the phone.

I suspect this is also messing up my ability to use my wifi. The wifi connects but nothing wants to browse while connected on my wifi.

Any ideas?

Cheers

This solved it: Turn off settings>system>wi-fi>enable wifi power saving mode
