The Samsung i900 OMNIA Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Ok - you guys seem to be in the know ;)
So I'm not going to be starting a new thread about this.
I'm trying to collect some info on this handset, based on user experience and I've read alot, based on the threads running around here.

My situation/question.

Looking at getting the Omnia on Prepaid.(very slight possibility as I'm leaning more towards the SE X1)
Don't wanna tie myself into any contracts.
I've heard from others here that the Garmin License is for life, so that's neat.
But what is the data usage like, if you do use the maps?
Not that I can actually see myself using the maps alot of the time, would only be to mess around with.

You can use Garmin even without inserting a Sim in your phone. It doesn't use any data at all, except if you enable A-GPS. (Assisted GPS) A-GPS uses cellphone towers as well to get your location.

Ah - thanks for that - at least I learned that much :o

So the Sony Ericsson Xperia 1 should be doing the same, but I can't find any info online from MTN or VC if the phone comes with any sort of licensed maps.
Anyway, don't want to derail this thread :p

And even if you do use the A-GPS, it uses just a few bytes to acquire a decent signal, I haven't seen mine use more thant R0.02 yet. (Using SPB GPRS Monitor)

Garmin licence problem

I have used the omnia's GPS very successfully with the garmin software for over 2 months now, but it just suddenly stopped working asking me to purchase the software. When I try to enter the serial it came with, it doesn't work, since it expects an 8-digit code and the one it came with is a 10-digit one. WTF? So much for Garmin-for-life?! Anyone had the same problem?

Definitely phone garmin, or take it to your nearest dealer, i have not had my phone long, but i made triple sure the maps were for life! I even went as far as to get email confirmation of it incase they try to come up with some rubbish clause....

Hi Guys/Girls, Got the Omnia today, first time to Samsung from Nokia...eish.
When I try and install the garmin software, I get the request to ' Pleas put the memory card in the card reader ' hmmmm....confused.

I want to install the software on my phone/memory card on the phone (The one that fits and not supplied by Samsung in the box). Dont have no card reader.

Oh and advise from the spec: ' To activate mobile navigator: From the Programs menu, select Samsung Mobile Navigator ' Problemo. There is none such an icon anywhere.

Did you insert the Micro SD card into the phone that came with the Omnia in Garmin packaging?

\0/ My Omnia finally arrived yesterday!

I have one tip, don't switch the phone off if you want the alarm to work! :o

I successfully managed to setup the GPS last night, had to scroll-down quite far to find the required icon, but it's all working now! :D

Anyone found a pouch/case for the Omnia yet?.

I got my Omnia yesterday too, immediately pimped it out. Set up SPB Mobile Shell with the slider unlock software (S2U2). Currently downloading some other cool SPB software, probably gonna test that out when I get home tonight.

There was someone who asked about SPB and performance on the phone. I wouldn't say that it increases the performance of the phone, however, it does increase your performance on the phone, in the sense that it makes the phone more finger friendly. And then there's the added bonus of it making your phone look super cool. Definitely worth the 3 hour's I spent looking for a serial key ;-)

My phone's not on the network yet (number needs to be ported) so I can't activate my Garmin as yet. Looking forward to testing it, I have used Nokia Maps previously and I've heard that Garmin is much better.

Just a question, on my friends nokia, he is able to transmit his sound via the FM transmitter. Is there an app that anyone knows of that can do this on WM 6.1? This would be really nifty for playing music from my phone to my car's radio.

REALLY happy with this phone, loving every moment of using it so far. Just wish MTN would get it activated already!!!

So everyone's USB mass storage for both My storage and storage card are working when you connect the phone to PC via USB?

I have got a refurbished phone from italk as a replacement for my first out of box failure handset. Which has got problem with the onboard 8G storage and card (I can always buy a new Micro SD, but I can't replace the onboard storage can I?).

I am going to get a screen protector when I go to HK this Xmas. Hopefully I can get the storage card to work (get a new one) and upload things to the storage and copy over to the onboard flash.

Can you guys install any program on the 8G My Storage? I tried with a few programs and none of them installed in My Storage but all went to the phone's storage.

For the guys running SPB Mobile shell.....Have you experienced any funny stuff?

OFTEN my phone wont unlock or just switches itself off....its damn irritating. It also seems to sometimes take ages to flip from Portrait to Landscape.

With mobile shell and the skins...did u install them in My storage or in the program files folder?

Thanks

Stu

Ha ha I couldn't help but laugh at these two sentences.. although I do realise the first one had something added which made it a little more sensible :)

I tested mine yesterday, and it seems to work fine. Just load some MP3s onto the phone, will try to load software at a later stage.

I am still getting the hang of the interface, the GPS is great, except when it took me on some bizarre route to Goblin's place on Saturday. His routing back to my next stop made more sense than the GPS was coming up with.

for a replacement to SPB shell, check this out...

I'm loving my Omnia, no issues at all.

yes some apps will install to the internal memory. This means that, that specific software needs to install to the 'device' itself, in order to work.

When u get your Omnia, put everything togethere, incl the additional 8GB storage, as this contains the Garmin software installs.

I have managed to install quite a lot of apps to the storage cards, all working fine

If anyone wants a really nice source for apps, PM me

I can honestly say I am having NO issues at all with my double sealed stickered, Omnia :)

The only casing I found so far is Body Glove silicon skin. Its damn ugly and my one doesnt fit so well, but I'm tolerating it, cause theres not much else in this department, at the moment.
I am an Omnia freak, phone has been pimped with the above link and I'm loving this damn phone!!

Does anyone know how to change the default storage location for Bluetooth transfers? Currently all data being transfered to my phone via bluetooth is being stored in "My Documents". And because the system memory is so low, I cannot transfer large files via bluetooth. The other possible solution would be if I could change the size of the system allocated memory. Any ideas?

ya, my documents sucks up the main storage, which is limited, I would also like to know how to increase the internal storage, but i reckon its probably not possible. I'm sure you can point your BT downloads to another folder though, I will have a look
