The Samsung i900 OMNIA Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Has anyone found covers, tv out cables for the Omnia. I need to get a cover quickly as my plastic has come off now and I don't want my beautiful phone scratched!
I wanna check out Cellucity and see if they have anything, but other wise the invisibleSHIELD for the Omnia from shopandship.co.za sounds like a good idea. Excerpt of an email from them: "The Screen only sells for R199 and the Full body for R299 we will have stock of the Full body arriving on Monday."

has anyone got the screen to rotate automically with you?
I'll assume u mean "for you" :)

2 ways to do it.
1) Activate 'Samsung Today 2' layout, and activate the auto-rotation via the 'Motion' menu item under the green Settings menu. (i hope u aren't wondering 'how do i do this?' If u r, then goto Start > Settings > Personal tab > Today > Items tab > Select 'Samsung Today 2' item and uncheck everything else > Click OK)
2) Start > Settings > System tab > Motion Sensor > Change 'Manual' to 'Automatic' > Click OK.

How to surf using WiFi instead of 3G/EDGE/GPRS

If anyone has noticed, it seems by default that even with Wi-Fi on, applications that require internet connectivity do not use the Wi-Fi connection, but instead use the phones 3G/EGDGE/GPRS connection. Now I tried what was suggested on the ppcsg forum (below), but it doesnt work. I didn't try the instructions highlighted in blue, as I don't know where that setting is. If anyone finds the solution to this, please post it. Otherwise we r all gonna be getting very big 3G/EGDGE/GPRS data bills!

<edit>OK, apparently this vid on youtube shows u the fix. Goto Settings > Conenctions > Browser Connection > Check 'Automatically detect settings' > Click ok

Yip, this is working now. Using WiFi and not trying to establish a 3G/EDGE connection.

One irritating thing I still find is that there doesn't seem to be a way to kill the 3G/EDGE connection without turning the 'Phone' off in Wireless Manager. Am I missing something?
</edit><edit2>Opera Mini does not seem to want to use the WiFi if the phone is set to on in Wireless Manager. It will initiate a 3G/EDGE connection if the phone is set to on. That is bloody irritating! </edit2><edit3>As confirmed in this post on the blackberry forums.</>

In the setting>connection>advanced>select networks, both the option are set to "my work network". Click on the edit>proxy settings, check the "this network connects to internet"

This will prevent the phone from using gprs.

In the streaming player option, chose connect via "my work network". Need to set the router firewall for the phone to access port 1024 to 65534

What a mission to put on! You get 1 chance. I think I messed it up already. :(

Anyone know where I can get a leather pouch or something like that? I'm not going to fork out another R300 on another chance at getting it right.

lol haha yeah man - you need to be in like a dust free lab with surgical precision to put those things on! I just bought some universal screen protectors at R20 a sheet, and also messed up the first one...sigh...
Havent seen pouches yet...

National Omnia out of stock? Still waiting for my Omnia, ordered with italk over a week ago.

I took it off. I decided that scratches are a way of life.

I have had my Omnia now for about 1 week, and I'm impressed. However, I could not find a forum that positively identified what the "Garmin GPS for life" thing meant. It seems that the South African setup is quite a bargain . . . read on.

The Omnia in my package (MTN) came with an 8GB SD card ("Storage Card" in WM6) with Garmin XT and Southern African Streetmaps (March 08) installed on it. In addition the phone has its 8GB internal storage ("My Storage" in WM6). The installation of the software is easy; just follow the instructions on the CD cover. The phone comes with a Garmap CD allowing you to restore your SD card, should something happen to it. You also get a coupon code, which allows you to register your handset with Garmin. Your map may only be used with your phone. I had trouble registering; I got an SMS with the unlock code, but according to the instructions it should have registered automatically. A quick call to Garmin support, and they recommended rebooting the handset. After that, the registration process went smoothly.

It is also possible to install the map on your desktop PC (MapSource), using the same unlock code you got with registration of your handset. This is very valuable for planning routes, but I have yet to find out how to tell the phone to follow an existing route that was downloaded to the phone.

What tip or trick is this?

I just had to reset my Omnia with the reset pinhole now. 3rd time the phone has hung in 9 days, tho before didn't have to use the reset option, tho i had to switch it off then on. Wtf

Has anyone tried the SPB Mobile Shell or Winterface or anything like that? Does it speed up the device any? Is it worth the change from the standard today screens?
But most importantly... can you uninstall them once it's installed without hard resetting the phone?

Hi guys I hope I will find help here, e-mail .... I can receive all my e-mail but cant send getting error System Administrator Message not send than it say that 501 .x.x.x invalid Address.

i use smtp.mtn.co.za anything I must change???

Thanx

Sorry dude, but maybe nobody else uses that smtp server. Have you tried a different one?
Is it an MTN email address, cause if not, you can use the smtp of the server you're accessing? I'm downloading my work email onto my Omnia and using their smtp...same with my gmail...

Omnia issue with 3G HSDPA

Hi guys,

I am having an issue with the Omnia. If I try to connect to the internet when I have 3G coverage, the browser remains blank - almost like hanging.

If I am in an area where there is no 3G coverage (normal grps \ edge) then the internet works perfectly.

Any ideas??

I am on Vodacom (3G Hsdpa 3.6)

Thanks,

maybe its a Vodacom service thing, like the rest of the company is currently suffering from being encapsulated in some sort of big lethargic jelly that just wobbles at you when you try talk to it

Ok - you guys seem to be in the know ;)
So I'm not going to be starting a new thread about this.
I'm trying to collect some info on this handset, based on user experience and I've read alot, based on the threads running around here.

My situation/question.

Looking at getting the Omnia on Prepaid.(very slight possibility as I'm leaning more towards the SE X1)
Don't wanna tie myself into any contracts.
I've heard from others here that the Garmin License is for life, so that's neat.
But what is the data usage like, if you do use the maps?
Not that I can actually see myself using the maps alot of the time, would only be to mess around with.
