I was also initially put off by the Omnia UI that I saw in the adverts. I eventually went with the Omnia because I decided the R3500 pay in for the HTC Touch Pro was not worth it.

I'm now using a program called SPB Mobile Shell, which installs the SPB menu which looks awesome :) Have a look at some of the screenshots I added here: http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/8894/ppuser/5265

I find this interface a lot friendlier to use :)
Let me know if you need help downloading/installing it.

A guy in Incredible said it was i910 due out later this year.
There's also the Pixion, which is being bandied about in the UK as an alternative as well.

Only released on 25 November 2008 so it will definitely be the later half of the year

Hi all,
I've read that there are some issues on the older firmware. I have also heard that there in no firmware update available in SA for download. Can someone please tell me what the latest firmware version is? And with what version did you get it on? Problems with the firmware?

I am considering this phone but it seems like firmware updates might be a problem.

Edit: Also seems to be a lack of support on XDA-developers

I have downloaded and installed the SPB Mobile Shell, it really makes the phone look great!.

Just one question though, is there anyway to change the clock to 24-hr format?. My phone is setup that way, but it still displays in 12-hr format in the Mobile shell.

I will try this for 15 days, and then decide if I want to register, so far I like it, and probably will.

I am gonan download it tonight and try it...but not if i have to pay..
 
i loaded the cooked rom that makes the omnia's menu's like a HTC touch Diamond, must say they are a lot better than the standard Samsung software... and i get longer battery life now, for some reason.

but you can upgrade to wrong country roms, its pretty easy.

Why don't you give us some more info on this and links?? I'm sure everyone will appreciate it.

Does your "Garmin for Life" still work with the cooked roms?

Yes can you tell us where did you find this version? Loading cooked roms would probably void your warranty? On which version were you before the upgrade?

If I am correct JCHH1 is:


JC = Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia
H = 2008
H = August
1 = version nr 1


Did you get the phone from Vodacom or MTN is it Vodafone branded?

The guy I got it from got it from Vodacom but it's not Vodafone branded at all. Only way I could see that it's from Vodacom is because of the Vodafone Live link when I openend Opera.

How is the battery life on your firmware version?
 
Any modded roms available for SA Omnia's? Im confused with the new firmware codes.. Too many, and too afraid to try any in case i brick my phone.. No more fun like my TyTn was, could load any rom and if it fails just use some tricks and it works again.. :) Im looking for unbranded clean/performance rom for my Omnia..
 
Has anyone used both the Diamond and the Omnia?
I'm interested to see how the size difference compares and the screens?
