WATCH: Robbers loot Durban jewellery store

DURBAN - Police arrested a gang of robbers who took 40 seconds to rob a jewellery store at the Southway Mall in Durban on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, police spokesman, said the men, aged between 25 and 35, were charged with business robbery.

There has been a spate of jewellery store robberies in the past month.

Robbers walk into jewellery stores in malls and use hammers to break the glass around cabinets.

They loot the cabinet of its contents. Zwane said the suspects will be profiled to see if they are linked to other crimes.

The CCTV footage of the Southway Mall incident shows two customers peering into a display cabinet.

Jewellery store at Pearls robbed

Durban – In the latest in a string of armed robberies at cellphone and jewellery shops across Durban, a jewellery shop at the Pearls Mall in Umhlanga was robbed today.

KZN SAPS spokesman Lt Col Thulani Zwane said: “Today at about 11.30am, two suspects allegedly accosted employees at a jewellery shop and robbed them of jewellery at gunpoint.”

The suspects made a getaway and no injuries were sustained.

“A case of business robbery was opened at Durban North police station for investigation,” he said.

This was not the first time the mall was robbed. Earlier this month, a jewellery store in The Pearls was also targeted and jewellery and other items were stolen.

Robbery at Pavilion shopping centre

Durban – Armed robbers stormed the Pavilion shopping centre in Durban on Tuesday morning, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash and opening fire at a security vehicle as they fled.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said two gunmen - armed with rifles - accosted security guards who were busy depositing cash into an ATM at around 11am.

They assaulted one of the guards before robbing them of an undisclosed amount of cash.

Wheelchair-bound man shoots alleged robber in East London

East London – A wheelchair-bound man shot and injured a man allegedly trying to rob him at an ATM in an East London mall on Tuesday afternoon, Eastern Cape police said.

The would-be thief, aged 44, was hit in the leg during the failed robbery in the shopping complex in Vincent around 14:30, Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said.

He would appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court once he had been discharged from hospital.

ALERT: Durban's mall attack hotspots mapped out

Durban - Robbers pounced on another mall in Durban on Thursday morning. This comes in the wake of a spate mall robberies across the city in recent weeks.

In the latest incident, Foschini in Galleria Mall was robbed on Thursday morning. A Foschini franchise store was also robbed two days ago at Pine Crest Shopping Centre in Pinetown.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, said a task team made up of members of various police units was established to tackle the rise in shopping mall crimes.

“There is a Provincial Task Team formed to curb these cases. We are also requesting the management at the malls to make sure that they beef up security at their business premises. Constant patrols are being made by the SAPS members to curb any criminal activities at the malls.”

Business Against Crime (BAC) KwaZulu-Natal branch manager Naeem Rahiman told the Independent on Saturday, that he was part of the task team.

WATCH: Cash-in-transit robbery at Durban mall

Durban – Police are hunting a gang of armed robbers who held up a cash-in-transit security guard at shopping centre in Inanda, North of Durban.

According to police, the security guard and his colleague were about to load the cash into an ATM on Tuesday when the gang of robbers swarmed them.

“As he was opening the ATM cubicle door with an electronic smart lock key he was approached by three unidentified suspects,” Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said.

Mom walks into armed robbery at local mall

A woman has been left traumatised after she walked into an armed robbery in progress in the Ackermans store at the Brentwood Park Mall this morning (May 10), at about 11am.

The shopper, who lives in Brentwood Park, left her young daughter with her brother in the car while she popped into the retailer.

The door was half open when she entered Ackermans, she said.

“As I pushed the door open I saw two armed men on my left holding up two of the staff members,” said the woman, who did not want to be named.

Within seconds, another armed robber – standing to the right of her – pulled her arm.

The man went through her purse and pockets, but found no valuables.

Cash-in-transit heist leaves three injured at Pretoria shopping centre

Three people were injured during a cash-in-transit robbery at a shopping centre in Mamelodi, Pretoria, on Tuesday.

“Upon arrival, paramedics discovered a security guard laying a few metres from his vehicle,” said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

“The man sustained a gunshot wound to his chest and was found to be in a critical condition.”

Meiring said two bystanders had also been shot, Rekord East reported.

Gunshots ring out during Clicks store robbery in Parkrand

Armed robbers recently went on a rampage at the Parkrand Shopping Centre, when they fired numerous shots and stole goods worth about R75 000 from Clicks.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the thugs, reportedly driving in a silver Toyota Corolla, confronted staff members who were at the time in the parking lot.

Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Cebisa Maseko, said they threatened the workers at gunpoint before dragging them into the Clicks store.

Orms Bellville robbed

Shots rang out in Durban Road earlier today (18 May) following an armed robbery at Orms Bellville.

According to Bellville police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Henriëtta van Niekerk, four suspects stormed Orms. Two of them were armed. They took cameras in the robbery, but the value is still to be determined.

The store and a section of the Caltex garage across the road has been cordoned off by police.

Van Niekerk says a witness saw the incident from across the road and when the suspects fled the scene the witness attempted to stop them by firing shots at the getaway vehicles. She says a BMW and a bakkie were used by the robbers. Nobody was injured during the shooting and the suspects fled onto the N1 highway.

According to Edenvale SAPS a business robbery, involving three to six robbers, took place at a shopping centre in Greenstone at about 5.30pm. One suspect has since been arrested.

Edenvale CPF chairperson, Linda McKenzie, told the NEWS suspects fled in a silver Mercedes Benz and officers gave chase after which the one suspect was apprehended.

Social media frenzy aggravates robbery

MBOMBELA – Three suspects held up the iStore personnel just after 09:00. One of the staff members, who kept her cellphone hidden, managed to report the incident on the public channel Zello.
This was quickly and widely circulated on social media and created much public interest. It even resulted in several onlookers arriving at the mall to see what was happening.

Mall management said a main concern was the number of people rushing to the scene instead of keeping away, after reading about the incident on social media, as they did not know who were the shoppers and who were robbers.

Four shops simultaneously robbed, shots fired

Approximately 18 heavily armed suspects simultaneously robbed almost an entire shopping centre of an undisclosed amount of money on Saturday, May 18.

The incident occurred shortly after 6pm.

It is alleged the suspects rushed into the small shopping centre in Klopperpark and robbed four shops simultaneously.

Some of the customers were also robbed in the process.

Two vehicles a Volkwagen Polo and a Mercedes Benz were also taken during the robbery.

As the suspects fled the scene they fired shots into the ground.

Two jewellery stores hit by armed robbers

MBOMBELA – A jewellery store was robbed while another deterred the robbery at Riverside Mall earlier tonight.

A witness recalled how 10 armed men, wearing balaclavas entered the mall at around 18:00. “I was in a nearby store when I saw the men running towards Arthur Kaplan and Browns Jewellers,” the witness said.

It is believed that the latter’s security system created smoke during the attempted robbery, thus deterring it. “I heard numerous gunshots and saw how they hit the Browns’ security guard at the back of his head.

Cape mall robbed twice in one week

Cape Town – A Cape Town mall has been hit by robbers for the second time in a week.

The MTN cellphone shop in Kenilworth Centre was robbed of cash, phones and a laptop at 4:50pm on Tuesday.

Last week, the Foschini store at the same mall was hit by suspects who got away with hundreds of bottles of posh branded perfume.

It’s also the third MTN store to be robbed on the Cape Flats since December.

The KC store was closed on Wednesday after workers were sent for trauma counselling.

A man in his 30s, who works at a clothing store in the mall, says they feel unsafe since the mall extended trading hours.

Jewellery robbers hold up staff at Galleria Mall

Jewellery thieves have been at it again this weekend, brazenly targeting another store at a KZN mall.

Police have confirmed that the Natal Wholesale Jewelers store at Galleria Mall in Amanzimtoti was robbed yesterday.

Police spokesperson, Tembekha Mbhele says two suspects entered the shop and held up employees before taking some jewelry.

Cops search for suspects after Mfuleni shopping centre robbery

CAPE TOWN - Police are searching for at least eight suspects who stole money from a shopping centre in Mfuleni earlier on Thursday.

Six armed robbers threatened employees but there are no reports of anyone being wounded.
