Syria’s five-week truce was left in tatters as Islamist rebels shot down a government warplane and captured its pilot near Aleppo while the regime and its allies vowed to launch a new offensive to drive all opposition fighters from the northern city.

A joint command center in Aleppo manned by officers from the Syrian regime, Iran, Russia and the Lebanese movement Hezbollah issued a rare joint statement that called the offensive a “huge breach of the cease-fire.”

“The Syrian Arab Army and its allies affirm that very shortly they will open hell’s gates on the armed groups on all fronts: north, south and west,” it said. The alliance urged civilians to vacate areas expected to become major battlegrounds in the coming hours and days. “All Russian, Hezbollah and Iranian forces have arrived in Aleppo and the battles will be a lesson for the Nusra Front and those with it,” it added.

The Obama administration is considering sending 250 additional U.S. special forces to Syria to advise rebel groups as part of a broader Pentagon recommendation on how to increase the pace of operations against ISIS, a U.S. defense official said Friday.

The goal is to lay the groundwork for local forces to retake both Raqqa, Syria, and Mosul, Iraq, and eliminate ISIS' ability to use them as areas from which to plan external attacks.

It's like they're trying to dig in with the "rebels" to get boots on the ground to stymie Assad retaking control of the entire country...

Would the US declare war against Syria if Syria started killing US troops inside Syria? :whistle:

Trying to arm/train/support the rebels to fight ISIS in such a way that there's a rebel army to right off Syria after ISIS is gone is a bad idea, I would say. Especially if it's a sign that you're intending to double-down on such a strategy paying dividends.

Why? Also to my knowledge these special forces operate with the Kurds, not sure what they mean by "rebel groups". I would like more clarification.

It would imply that the United States has not given up on forcing the issue wrt gas pipelines. That in turn implies that the worst may well be yet to come.

1: All non-invited military forces are invaders by default
2: To date, any support for "the rebels" has resulted in indirect support for Al-Nusra Front and ISIS
3: The pace of the fight against ISIS has already accelerated judging by the number of cities that has fallen during the cease-fire agreement

Given all of that, this is a monumentally bad idea yes, the US doubling down on a strategy that has already proven to be a failure. One has to call their motivation into question given that the fight against ISIS is going better without their "help" frankly. It's like they're honestly still dumb enough to believe they can affect regime change after the momentum has shifted entirely towards the regime or they are just scared of not being able to claim credit for Russia's victory geopolitically ...

As i said before since it talks about adding to its existing special forces then i think its to support the Kurds, its just CNN being liberal with the use of the word rebels. The Kurds have been very successful in fighting ISIS and the US is the only force consistently taking out high ranking ISIS and Al Qaeda leadership.
