The telecoms monopolies tumble

The situation has now reached the stage where there are significantly more wireless broadband connections in South Africa than ADSL subscribers.
That is flipping disgusting.

Internationally operators know that a broadband connection is extremely valuable because it is a ‘pipe’ into the subscribers’ home which can be used to provide revenue generating services – something which is fought over fiercely.
True. LOL. They've effectively forced sattelite TV to win the race.

The differing reactions from Telkom and Multichoice to a more competitive market can be used as a study of good versus bad future planning. While Multichoice is digging in its heels and improving services, Telkom appears to have put its head in the sand.

Telkom’s poor handling of their customers is clearly starting to influence their bottom line. The news that the Telkom-MTN deal is in tatters has seen investors jump ship causing Telkom’s share price to fall dramatically – a possible sign of a lack of trust in Telkom’s future prospects.

Multichoice is doing something proactively to retain their customer base - which is a good sign.

Telkom still is doing nothing, and still is alienating their customer base - bad thing to do.

So the next few months will be extremely interesting to watch :D

The result is that they offered ADSL connectivity at inflated prices, which angered customers, and aggravated the situation further with their poor service delivery.

Nice article, but why refer to the above in the past? Telkoms prices are still grossly inflated and their service is worse than ever. I applied to have Telkom to bump up my DSL from 384k to 4m a month ago, a very basic request, and still no action after numerous phone calls all promising the service "by the end of the week".

Just on another note: I feel the competition commision should wrap up the Tiger Brands issue and now deal with Telkom -time for the CC to prove that they are not partial. It's all fine to charge Tiger Brands etc for price fixing but what about governements failure to make any impact on Telecoms prices as a major shareholder?

Telkoms ship seems to have sprung a few major leaks..I cannot wait for it to sink..HAHAHAHAHAHA.

KARMA..don't mess with KARMA.

The sad thing is all the short sighted management ie CEO, MD etc that has steered telkom down the toilet and made them the most hated company in SA, are not the ones who are going to suffer, its all the employees that are going to find themselves without jobs.

Telkom finally hit the iceburg ?

This is going to better than the movie titanic when it first came out.
Need to get myself some pop corn and coke, cause this is going to be a good "movie".

BEST OF ALL! Isn't Celine Dion coming to SA next year ? She will be in time to sing the telkom titanic theme song!

...

Try going to a Telkom shop if there's one near you. it's better than phoning them.

Why is Telkom do movies site linked to the Cinemas like Nu Metro and Ster kinikor when we just can visit there sites or computicket yourself ?

I do not get it ? "Do movies" doesn't it defines that you can download or stream movies to your pc or am I wrong ?

nice article rpm :)

fear not tho - telkom will be with us for many moons yet

Before you read further on MyADSL, do tell us what the telkom "do" advertisements are telling you exactly.

Do Broadband = I get fast internet for the hole month.
Do Music = They let me download and stream music.
Do Movies = i can download\stream movies to my PC\TV in the monthly package

So my cunclusion is that there advertising is misleading to the public.

"Do" = No ? .... Spelling mistake ?

So if Do = No then
No Broadband
No Music
No Movies
Do pay us...

who on earth in their right mind would use telksum for TV? why support them if you have other options available. ICASA should not have provided them with a license based on their track record of non-compliance and anti-competative behaviour.

Your conclusion is correct - they are misleading the public.

Also, the 3Gb caps is utterly ridiculous.

Government owns Telkom.
Government wants to control the media?

Government controls DOC.
DOC controls ICASA.
ICASA issues the licences.
