The Tesla Model 3 Thread

The problem I have with Electric cars is people's motivation for buying them. It shouldn't be because it is electric, or to save money on petrol.

So objectively then, the method of propulsion is irrelevant. So then you buy it because you like the package. Objectively, I'd rather have a better looking German car.

If you buy this because you want to save money, you are delusional.

Free charging stations or charge it at work?

And sometimes people aren't stubborn and want to support technology that is going to be the future. That, and who doesn't want a self-driving car?

And you must be a bit delusional if you don't think that Teslas are good looking.

I'd call it a shooting brake or is that taking things a bit too far or how about BMW's definition a GranCoupe

If you live in a supercharger-covered area and in the market for a R600 000 odd car from the end of 2017, you'd be mad to get anything other than a Model 3.

OK, I'm confused.
If you would've already bought a car in that price range, then you're gonna save a loads. Even with all our electricity price increases you're still gonna pay far less to charge this thing that the price of the equivalent petrol. And if you're not in SA, you'll have access to free charging stations too. Or if you're really OCD, you could get your own solar charger.

Not to mention that maintenance on these should be far less as well (less complex motor, far fewer moving parts etc.)

So please explain?
 
Is it not possible that some of your guys are blinded by the Tesla PR-machine & #Teslalove?

Is it really the best thing since a lovely slice of bread?

Probably more to do with the fact that it's coming here than the car itself.

There are many knock on effects after all.

Not to mention so far...we've only gotten ****ty electric stuff like the Leaf and then at crazy prices.
 
Still very expensive though. 35,000 + 25% + 14% + 10%(profit)= $54,862.5 * 15 = R822,937.5...

Because the motivation is to "save money" after buying a R600 000 car. It makes no sense. Rather buy a cheaper car. Saving money should not be your thinking. It should be "I really like this car" or the technology. I have no problem if you like the car itself and the features. But I don't buy this argument that people like it because they can plug it in for "Free" or "save money" on petrol.

At R12 a litre and doing 10L/100km over 100 000km, fuel only costs: R120 000. Buy a R480 000 petrol car which will be similar in spec and can go anywhere anytime. Or buy a diesel.
 
Yeah, I'd buy the Tesla because I like:

1)The car
2)The company
3)Hardly any moving parts!

I suppose it depends on what you call similar spec. Getting anything close to self-driving with sub 6s 0-100 will cost quite a bit with other brands.

Oh I agree, but as I said, if you're planning to buy in this price bracket anyway, this is a very nice option. Looks, features, performance, and no worries about petrol.

Anyway, this is just a forerunner, but if it's successful it'll do a lot to get electric cars into the mainstream, and down to sane prices.

Why would the local price suddenly add 10% profit? That was already built into the $35000.

Also we should get some kind of developing world preferential pricing.

Also...

So the Model S comes with three different "engines".

60 kWh
70 kWh
85 kWh

So at R1.75 per kwh for me at present at the higher tier that would mean R105, R122.5 and R148.5 to charge each configuration fully.

Now the word on the street is that the base model is 60 kwh and that's what gives you the 350km range.

Which translates to 30c per km...which is about 1/3rd of the real world average of R1 per km for most cars.

My own car which is very close in acceleration and speed (but not shape or features) is R1,309 per kilometre in the real world.

A BMW 330i which is spec for spec very close to the Tesla Model 3 is R1,75 per km.

Over 5 or 10 years of ownership those numbers become massive.

My car has used R21 437,53 in petrol in the last 12 months. That would have been only R4913,10 if I was driving a Tesla Model 3.

R16 524.43 SAVED in a single year.

R82 622.15 SAVED over five years.

Suddenly doesn't look all that expensive after all.
 
How long is the life expectancy of the battery pack? You might need to look at replacing it in a few years?
