My Afrikaans is limited to swear words only. Did they mention anything to do with what load weight they had on the Hilux? I know the overseas one mentions several hundred kg's, but the local blue Hilux looks light like it just has the driver. Weight would make a massive difference.

Looks like they were driving slower in the south african version. I'm sure speed would be a major factor as well.
After looking at the SA one I just get the feeling that they did not do it right.
 
Toyota SA beefs up Hilux SRX, adds bling to Fortuner

Toyota South Africa Motors has upgraded its Hilux SRX models, while also adding some bling to certain of its Fortuner derivatives.

The local arm of the Japanese automaker says it based these latest changes on customer feedback.

The most significant change to Hilux SRX models is a switch from a narrow-body design to a wide-body construction. This means SRX variants now feature the integrated over-fenders already used on Raider models, as well as a wider, front bumper design.

The update adds some 55 mm to the width of the SRX single- and double-cab derivatives (xtra-cab models, of course, already featured the wide-body construction). The side-mirrors, meanwhile, gains integrated indicators.

SRX models also ditch their steel wheels for wider-track 17-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 265/65/R17 all-terrain rubber, as used on Raider variants.

Meanwhile, the Fortuner has also come in for some changes. All 2,8 GD-6 and 4,0 V6 Fortuner models are now equipped with fresh 18-inch alloy wheels (replacing 17-inch versions), shod with 265/60/R18 rubber.

Furthermore, 2,7 VVTi and 2,4 GD-6 Fortuner derivatives now boast leather interior trim.

Toyota SA confident Hilux will stay on top for 2016

The Ford Ranger may have outsold the Toyota Hilux in November, but the local arm of the Japanese automaker says its year-to-date lead is “virtually unassailable”.

In November, for the second month running, the Ranger beat the Hilux in the sales stakes, outselling the Japanese bakkie by 1 188 units.

Calvyn Hamman, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors, said “inordinate cash incentives and high stock availability by a number of brands has temporarily moved Hilux into second place”.

However, he added that Hilux volumes were “still tracking way above target”.

“We are still set to close off the year in the number one spot. Year-to-date Hilux has a virtually unassailable lead of more than 2 550 sales over its nearest competitor, ensuring it will claim the title of best-selling vehicle in South Africa for the 44th time, an amazing accolade,” Hamman said.

Ford Motor Company of SA, meanwhile, reported that November yielded best-ever sales results for the Ranger.

“With the Ranger setting another all-time record of 3 680 units in November, it proves the response to this vehicle has been superb,” said Neale Hill, director of marketing, sales and service for Ford SA.

“What we’re seeing coming through very strongly is the new 2,2 TDCi automatic derivatives that are rapidly gaining traction in the market,” Hill added.

In November, total of 5 776 Ranger units were furthermore exported from the brand’s Silverton factory to markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

In October 2016, Wheels24 reported on a video showing the new Toyota Hilux failing a handling test (Moose Test).

In the video, created by Swedish motoring publication Teknikens Värld, the Hilux can be seen travelling at 60km/h as a test driver attempts to navigate a 'moose test''.

The clip revealed poor handling and the Hilux partially 'lifting' off the ground, whereas the majority of its main rivals (Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara etc) performed well. What about a local test?

South African test

Wheels24 sister publication WegRY, SA’s biggest 4x4 magazine, performed its own version of the Moose Test though returned very different results to that of the Swedish publication.

WegRY editor, Jaco Kirsten, said: "When we published the video of the Swedish magazine who did the so-called “moose test” with a Hilux - and where the Hilux seemed to be quite unstable - we were surprised at the reaction. It was as if someone had set off a bomb in a movie theatre. There was hysterics, anger - and a good deal of smugness thrown in for good measure.

"So we sourced a standard Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 4x4 auto double cab and loaded it to its max recommended load limit and repeated the test. We used the exact layout of the Swedish publication - also known as the ISO3888-2 test - to the nearest centimetre.

"The result? The Hilux breezed through at 60km/h - where the Swedish test ran into serious problems - and also passed at 70km/h. We cannot explain this, although we suspect one of two things: The Swedish vehicle’s tyres were underinflated (look at the extreme sidewall deflection they experienced); and the Swedish-spec Hilux might have a different spec suspension - which is what someone in the suspension industry told us.

"However, this still needs to be confirmed."

Never seen Toyota discounts like that before. Clearly Toyota SA is determined to claw back and own the bakkie sales charts again.
