Ranger trumps Hilux! New bakkie sales for October

Cape Town - The Ford Ranger has outsold the Toyota Hilux in October 2016, according to sales figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa).

However, domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles (LCV) reveal grim industry figures; 13 559 units were sold during October, reflecting a decline of 1623 units or 10.7% compared to the 15 182 LCVs sold during the corresponding month in 2015.

Tight battle at the top

Since its launch early in 2016, the new Hilux has dominated bakkie sales. The Ranger has made a strong comeback and retook the top spot it held for the most part of 2015. The trumping of the formidable Hilux can be attributed to Ford SA equipping its 2.2 Ranger with an automatic gearbox.

The Ranger and the Hilux are the only bakkies to have sold more than 2000 units, with the Nissan NP200 (1175) more than 1600 behind the Hilux. In addition to being at the top of the bakkie charts, both these vehicles are also the two top-selling vehicles in South Africa - despite Naamsa reporting a decline in new vehicle sales.

Naamsa said: “Domestically, the short to medium term outlook remained extremely challenging. Double digit new vehicle price inflation, pressure on household disposable incomes, low levels of business confidence and relatively high interest rates would continue to impact negatively on new vehicle sales."

Ranger leading the charge

Ford sold a whopping 2964 units of its Ranger in October 2016, followed closely by the Hilux on 2781. The NP200 sold the third-most on 1175.

The Isuzu KB remained in the top five with 953 units, followed by the Nissan Hardbody (868) in sixth place.

Mahindra’s Bolero and Scorpio bakkies complete the top ten.

Dit het die laaste ruk behoorlik gegons nadat ’n Sweedse tydskrif ’n video gepubliseer het waar ’n Toyota Hilux sukkel om ’n toets te slaag waartydens gekyk word hoe stabiel ’n voertuig is as dit skielik vir iets moet uitswaai.

WegRy het toe besluit om die toets met ’n Suid-Afrikaanse-spesifikasie Hilux te herhaal en te kyk wat gebeur.

Ons het die presiese afmetings van die toets, wat in die omgang as die “Moose test” bekend staan, gevolg. Toyota was ook salig onbewus van waarvoor ons die bakkie geleen het, dus kon hulle hom ook nie modifiseer nie. Trouens, dis presies dieselfde bakkie as wat op ons Junie- (“Hilux vs die Res”) en Oktober-uitgawes (“Olifante en agterpaaie in Addo!”) se voorblaaie gebruik is – gaan kyk maar na die nommerplaat: FD 12 DB GP!

Ons het vroeër die week ’n lewendige skakel van die toets op Facebook gepubliseer. Weens ’n swak dataverbinding het dit gelyk of die toetse teen baie lae snelhede gedoen is. Op die meegaande video is daar geen twyfel dat ons dit tussen 60 en 70 km/h gedoen het nie. Hoor net hoe lekker fluit die Hilux se tekkies!

That is emergency lane changing, not a moose test. Wegry are FOS here. The moose test done by those overseas chaps was extreme swerving in comparison.
