Anyone buying the claims that all the fake vents were intentionally put on the car so that aftermarket parts could be used instead? So what, if you have no intention of tuning your Zupra, you have to contend with a car that has suboptimal cooling?
 
Toyota Unveils TRD Goodies for Supra

The new Toyota Supra is due to land in South Africa in the next month or two, but globally there are already TRD upgrades available for the Japanese market, giving us some indication of what's possible.

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development and shouldn't be confused with the recent GRMN sub-brand. TRD has shown off new a series of carbon fibre parts for the all-new 2020 Toyota Supra in Japan, which should satisfy those who think its looks are too understated. The new carbon goodies aren't just for show either and TRD claims there are aerodynamic and weight benefits.

There are parts for the front spoiler, side skirts, side door garnish, rear side spoiler and trunk spoiler, which all pair nicely with the new-look forged 19-inch aluminium wheels.

Toyota GR Supra (2019) International Launch Review

The new Toyota GR Supra is a welcome addition to a small but growing class of purpose-built sportscars. The newcomer, which will arrive in South Africa in July 2019, clearly has great potential, but not all of it has been realised yet, our UK correspondent Andrew Frankel reports.

Should I buy one?

Toyota says that this Supra is just the start of the story. We know the 4-cylinder version of the car (already on sale in Japan) is heading towards Europe and Tada-san is absolutely not ruling out higher performance versions.

I hope he rules them in soon. To me "Supra" is a special name and it deserves only to be attached to very special cars. For all Toyota’s claims that the new one has not been compromised by its BMW DNA, compromised is how it feels. It’s as if Toyota knew exactly how to make this a landmark sportscar but pulled back, just a little, right at the last moment. Until the Japanese firm can find the courage of its convictions and deliver a visceral, engaging version of the car the Supra could so transparently be, impressive though the newcomer is in so many ways, it will remain a "work in progress" in my opinion.

Dyno Test Reveals The 2020 Toyota Supra Has a Lot More Power Than Expected

It’s fairly well known that modern BMW engines tend to have more actual horsepower and torque than is advertised. And—I don’t know if you’ve heard this or not—the 2020 Toyota Supra uses a BMW engine and chassis tuned by Toyota engineers. So when I drove the new Supra a few weeks ago, I figured it could be underrated too, since it certainly felt more powerful than its official figures let on.

To recap, the Supra packs a twin-scroll turbo 3.0-liter inline-six BMW engine called the B58B30M1. It’s rated at 335 HP and 365 lb-ft of torque. But given that this sports cars weighs in at 3,397 pounds but can do zero to 60 mph in under four seconds, it certainly feels more powerful than that.

C&D’s dyno test, done at Livernois Motorsports and Engineering in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, appears to confirm this. Their Supra came in at 339 HP and 427 lb-ft of torque—at the wheels. It’s not uncommon for a car’s wheel horsepower to be less than what is claimed at the crank, but hot damn, is that torque figure a nice surprise.

Toyota Supra Produces More Than Claimed 335 HP (250 KW)

Many people are saying that the new Toyota Supra is a bit disappointing than what they were expecting. Originally, Toyota has claimed that the power output of the car was 335 HP (250 kW) with 494 Nm of torque. However, Car&Driver recently got their hands on one and it turns out the power figures are a bit more impressive than that.

Car&Driver had the idea to put the new 2020 Supra onto a dyno to see what power can actually be found in the turbo-charged, 3.0-litre inline-six engine. The results, while in fifth gear, showed that the Supra produced 339 HP (253 kW) and a rather more substantial 578 Nm of torque. It should be noted that these figures were measured at the wheels and not at the crank, as per Toyota’s quoted figures.

It’s difficult to say just how much power is lost through the car’s powertrain, but despite that fact the Supra could actually be producing about 380 Japanese horses (283 kW).

Should I buy one?

Have you ever thought a Porsche Cayman looks a bit weedy somehow? Do you prefer the classic long-nosed design proportions, the handling manners or the generally more convenient comfortable daily usability of a front-engined sports car to what you’d get from a smaller, lighter mid-engined car? Do you like a leftfield, alternative take on life? Then, yeah, maybe you should.

The ‘GR’ Supra isn’t quite a class-leading sports car judged solely (and probably overly simply) on its driving experience alone. It’s not as nimble, as immersive or as compelling as an A110; but, besides being quick, composed and plenty of fun to drive in its own way, it would also fit into your life more easily than the Alpine would.

This is certainly a much better sports car, in many ways, than either of Nissan’s more recent Z cars were; or than the Mazda RX8 was. If it were only priced like either of those two, there would be one less caveat in the way of a ringing endorsement.

Toyota Supra built to accommodate tuners

The Toyota Supra has traditionally been seen as an open canvas upon which owners and tuners alike could modify for various purposes such as drag racing, drifting and track day racing. With the current A90 generation the brand has kept this in mind as chief engineer of the car, Tetsuya Tada, reveals.

Talking to Japanese Nostalgic Car, Tada-san claims the development of the new Supra has incorporated specific measures to accommodate tuners and private owners who wish to push their cars to new limits. “The A90 Supra was developed with tuning in mind,” Tada-san reveals. “I went to individual people in charge of various aftermarket companies and made sure it was a welcoming car to tune. I made certain all the necessary reinforcements to turn it into a race car were already installed. I invited all the major tuning houses in Japan to come look at it; Cusco, Trust, Fujitsubo, and so on and everyone was surprised.”

Tada-san points out additional open spaces in the Supra's architecture to accommodate aftermarket parts and a set of mounting points on the radiator core and bulkhead for stiffening braces as some of the highlights among these tuner-friendly touches. Structural reinforcements and mounting points on the boot are present for those looking to mount an aftermarket wing, and there’s also extra space around the chassis for an aftermarket radiator; something that was considered in light of cooling issues often encountered with tuned versions of the previous model.

Another Dyno Test Reveals The 2020 Toyota Supra Has More Power Than Advertised

BMW guts or not, I was adamant that the 2020 Toyota Supra felt like it had more than the reported 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. The car can seriously move, and when Car and Driver revealed a 3.8 second zero to 60 mph time we all started to wonder how much power it really put down. Now the latest dyno test reveals that, at least on the media tester cars we’ve seen so far, the advertised power figures are closer to what the car puts down at the wheels—not at the crank.

The dyno test comes from Motor Trend, which put a Supra press loaner to the test on a Mustang eddy-current chassis dynamometer at World Motorsports in Torrance, California. Their result? A pretty impressive 332 HP and 387 lb-ft to the rear wheels.

Toyota Supra To Race Nurburgring 24 Hour

Toyota will be entering a new Supra into the Nurburgring 24 Hour Race this weekend. There's a nugget of info that has us very interested, however.

Motorsport is a great test of a car's reliability and durability as it pushes a vehicle to its limits for an extended period of time. However, the Nurburgring 24 Hour race event takes this to a new level and is extremely taxing and demanding to both vehicle and driver. With each lap comprising 25 km of distance, an altitude change of 300 metres and over 170 corners, a vehicle will be under serious strain.

The new Toyota Supra will be launching in South Africa in the 3rd week of July 2019.
