The Toyota Supra Thread

So you spent +- 50k US dollars on a Z4 , and then you need to spend additonal thousands to make it look and feel like a proper supra :cautious::confused:
 
Reading a lot of reviews and more negative comments. Was a review on Ignition tv and the Journo said the car was nice but not great and to uncomfortable to drive long distances.

Typical SA journalist. Pretty much every other EU journalist said its very comfortable for a sports car. what is he comparing it to? a 7 seires?

Surprised they haven't slated the back seats being too uncomfortable for a 6 foot adult, considering their obsession with back seats, 4 doors and a big boot.

It's only cool for Porsche to make coupes and win COTY...

Very True, I am the balance in this bmw Zupra thread. My word this car is ugly. I can not get over that in my opinion ugly F1 inspired nose or the fact that every single part is actually from a bmw.
I am heart broken that japan could not make there own JDM car.

This car will sell in low numbers, never reach cult status. As a tuner car the first thing to go would be the engine and gearbox.

Did you do research & see why Toyota partnered with BMW? Hint it involves a straight six.

Additionally the sportscar market has been on a decline for a number of years already. The theory is that if Toyota didn't partner with BMW, or anyone else, this new Supra would not have come out even.

You need to understand Toyota's approach for the past 10-15 yrs or so. It's almost fully focused on emissions & hybrids & the like. I for one I'm glad it actually got built after many many years of teasing.

To each their own I guess.

And all they ended up doing was rebadged a bmw.

Why did they need BMW's engine though. It's not like they've never made a 6 cylinder before.

I'm sure it's a great car, but a Supra it is not. Anyone who says that a Z4 is a competitor to a GTR or NSX is smoking their socks...

Afaik Toyota/Lexus currently don't have a straight six in it's arsenal. The cost of developing a bespoke unit would be exorbitant & not to mentioned be inefficient for a relatively low volume vehicle.

The main requirement of any Supra is a straight six motor, BMW has a rather good one in it's toolbox.

No one said the new Supra is a rival to a GT-R or NSX like days gone by. Those cars are much more powerful, much more expensive & much more exclusive.

Direct rival for the new Supra is the Porsche 718 twins. Alpine A110, Audi TT performance models & finally sister car Z4. The top line SLC can be included as well.

Why develop a new engine?
All they need to do is dust off the old 2JZ gte. Modernise it with some direct injection and some Variable Valve Timing. Modern software and easy 600 hp in OEM guise.

C'mon emissions. You know the world we live in. It's all about emissions & carbon footprint & the like.

Look at the old s2 quarto rally car. 2.2 5 cylinder. Later used (94) in the RS advent. The same engine kept evolving and updating to what we find in the Audi tt rs. Within emission standard and probably one of the fastest 0 to 100 oem cars up here at the Highveld. So if audi could do it why can Toyota not?

Nothing to do with emissions. Its Toyota taking a flagship icon and handing over it to become a bmw.
