M3-engined Toyota Supra ‘possible but unlikely’ says M division boss
Never say never for a 503bhp twin-turbo six-cylinder Supra, even if Toyota has yet to ask the question
New BMW M division president Markus Flasch has left the door slightly ajar for the supply of his firm’s latest six-cylinder performance engine – the 503bhp S58 unit destined for the 2020 M3 and M4 – to Toyota for use in a hotter version of the GR Supra.
Although the new-generation straight six has so far been fitted to only the X3 M and X4 M Competition performance SUVs, it is due to be installed in all of BMW M’s next generation of compact high-performance models, from the M2 coupé upwards. And, in a break from convention, it’s possible that it could feature in a high-performance Supra, too.
So far, no expression of interest from Toyota has been made, according to Flasch. But if the deal was done, it would make it the first BMW M engine to be sold as a customer unit, and to feature in a third-party car, since the McLaren F1’s S70 V12.

The head of the BMW M division has admitted it would be possible to drop the upcoming M3’s engine into the Toyota GR Supra, but emphasised such a scenario is “unlikely for now”.
Speaking to Autocar, Markus Flasch said considering using the S58 unit – the Munich-based firm’s 3,0-litre six-cylinder engine that has already debuted in the X3 M and X4 M and is also set to feature in the upcoming M3 and M4 – in the new Supra made for an “interesting idea”.

Toyota Supra is here: SA pricing released
Toyota South Africa has officially put a price tag on its new Supra sports car ahead of its local launch this week.
The two-door will be available in three variants, starting at R953 000 for the GR Supra ‘Track’ model. The standard GR Supra then comes in at R1 072 300, while the Matte Grey edition will set you back R1 092 300.
It's Z4 platform partner, for comparison sake, starts at R1 036 699 in M40i form, although you can get a four-cylinder model from R759 442.
All three Supra models roll on 19-inch alloy wheels, but the main differences are in the cabin spec.
The Track-badged base model comes with dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker touchscreen sound system with reverse camera, cruise control and regular cloth seats.

Toyota South Africa Motors has released pricing for its new GR Supra, with the local range comprising three variants at launch.
A derivative described as the “GR Supra Track” will start at R953 000, while the standard GR Supra will come in at R1 072 300 (and be offered in a choice of seven colours). The third variant is the GR Supra Matte Grey, which will be R20 000 more at R1 092 300 and differs only by paint colour (featuring, as you might have guessed, an exclusive Matte Storm Grey hue). For the record, the BMW Z4 M40i is priced at R1 036 699.
While the GR Supra Track (seemingly available only in red) features items such as standard cruise control, a 10-speaker audio system and manual front-seat adjustment, the two other models boast adaptive cruise control, a 12-speaker JBL audio system, power adjustment for the front seats, a head-up display, navigation, seat heaters and wireless smartphone charging.
The top-spec models furthermore gain parking sensors, lane-departure alert, a pre-crash system, automatic LED headlamps and leather/Alcantara upholstery (the Track model features fabric), as well as adaptive variable suspension. Interestingly, only the flagship models feature Isofix child-seat anchors.

Under that curvy and striking body is a 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged 6-cylinder motor. It produces 250 kW and 495 Nm. Power goes to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and Toyota claims that it's offering will hit 100 kph in just 4.1 seconds.
Toyota is marketing its new Supra as a premium Grand Tourer and there will be considerable premium features fitted like Keyless Smart Entry, dual automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear camera, rain sensor windshield wipers, garage door opener, power folding mirrors, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel will be standard. There will be a high-end multimedia setup, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay as well as a JBL audio system, but we're going to wait for official local confirmation to see what SA-spec Supras will receive in terms of tech.
We'll be driving the Toyota Supra in SA this week, and we'll have final confirmation of specification and features then.

You will have the choice between three variants, starting at R953,000 for the GR Supra ‘Track’ model. The standard GR Supra will hit your wallet to the tune of R1,072,300 while the Matte Grey edition will set you back R1,092 300.
The Z4 M40i starts at R1,036,699 so they are pretty similarly priced and will come down to brand preference and of course how they are to drive. We have driven the Z4 M40i already and will be driving the new Supra this week.
