That is exactly the problem. It is supposed to be a rival to those cars in price, performance and exclusivity. It is supposed to offer supercar performance while being much more affordable (relatively speaking).No one said the new Supra is a rival to a GT-R or NSX like days gone by. Those cars are much more powerful, much more expensive & much more exclusive.
Afaik Toyota/Lexus currently don't have a straight six in it's arsenal. The cost of developing a bespoke unit would be exorbitant & not to mentioned be inefficient for a relatively low volume vehicle.
The main requirement of any Supra is a straight six motor, BMW has a rather good one in it's toolbox.

Direct rival for the new Supra is the Porsche 718 twins. Alpine A110, Audi TT performance models & finally sister car Z4. The top line SLC can be included as well.
