That is exactly the problem. It is supposed to be a rival to those cars in price, performance and exclusivity. It is supposed to offer supercar performance while being much more affordable (relatively speaking).

That is the appeal of a Japanese performance car. You don't take a legendary name like the Supra and dumb it down to the level of a mid-range roadster.

Imagine the outcry if the next GT-R was a rebadged SLK or TT, and it was brushed off as "well no one said it was supposed to be like days gone by"...

The main requirement of any Supra is a straight six motor, BMW has a rather good one in it's toolbox.

Direct rival for the new Supra is the Porsche 718 twins. Alpine A110, Audi TT performance models & finally sister car Z4. The top line SLC can be included as well.

The thing is, the Supra NEVER was meant to be a rival to the GT-R. More the Honda NSX, Mazda RX-7 ‘FD’, and Nissan 300ZX.
It just so happened to punch way above it's class. ie. GT-R class.

Clash of the coupes: Toyota Supra meets BMW M2 Competition and Porsche 718 Cayman

The new Supra faces its first big test against premium-cut German rivals. And as we discover, it’s a close-run contest

So that leaves the car in front as a Toyota. Yet this is a victory that’s achieved almost as much by the flaws of its rivals as it is by its own impressive abilities, and perhaps against a punchier Cayman S the tables would be turned. The truth is that the Supra is still around 10% away from real greatness – it’s crying out for a more soulful-sounding engine, a smidge more damping control and a better gearbox (how about a manual?).

That said, let nothing be taken away from the Supra’s incredible achievement here because, despite its foibles, it’s a hugely entertaining sports car with a character and charm of its own – a car that is worth taking for a drive just for the hell of it, yet arguably the easiest to live with day to day.

So right here, right now, the Supra scores – but it’s far from ‘job done’ yet for Tada-san and his team.

Toyota Supra review: the Chris Harris verdict

The Supra handles well on a track, it remains very composed on bumpy roads and it always feels fast – even if the motor is really done by 5,500rpm. I just can’t believe how much front-of-house architecture from BMW Toyota has used – it’s one of the strangest decisions I’ve seen in two decades of doing this for a living, because it has resulted in a car that is almost totally without identity. A really talented car that doesn’t seem to know what it is. And however much Toyota says its DNA is embedded in the joint project as it has been there from the start, it doesn’t stack up. If that’s the truth, they should have been shouting louder in the meetings.

Now it might just be that the people Toyota wants to buy the Supra don’t care about heritage or the narrowness of the comeback window. And if that’s the case, Toyota has been very clever and snuck one under the radar. And saved a chunk of cash. But in a world of Alpines and Caymans and M2 Competitions – cars whose identities are hewn from the foundation stones of the company headquarters – I think it’s nothing short of a tragedy.

This was Toyota’s opportunity to sign off from the petrol generation with a statement of what it stands for. Instead it has given us a very competent, restyled BMW. It could also have just not called it a Supra, which would have appeased most of us geeks and saved me writing this 1,500 word rant. Me? I’d have an Alpine over this eight days of the week.

New 690 HP 2JZ-Powered Toyota Supra Headed To Drift At Goodwood

The Goodwood Festival of Speed starts tomorrow which means the best automotive machines from around the world will gather and show off in front of thousands of petrol heads at the event and watching live.

This HKS Toyota Supra Drift car has completely been rebuilt and now packs a 2JZ-GTE that’s boosted by an HKS GTIII-4R. This results in a tyre-shredding output of 690 horsepower (515 kW) which is twice as much as the engine output of the GR Supra.

Toyota Supra GT4

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing confirmed that it will launch the GR Supra GT4, a race car for customer teams, in 2020. The announcement comes in response to growing customer expectations worldwide following the unveiling of the GR Supra GT4 Concept at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, and the participation of the GR Supra at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in June. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing intends to strengthen its focus on customer motorsports in order to enable motorsports-lovers around the world to freely participate in races, and to develop ever-better cars using the feedback gained through race participation.

The GR Supra GT4 is based on the GR Supra-TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's first-ever global model released in early 2019 - and it is developed and produced by Toyota Motorsport GmbH.
