THE TRUTH ABOUT AFRIHOST!

TI are great IMO. I set my torrents between 00:00 and 06:00 and they fly along. Other than that my line usually always runs at full speed. I average between 70-110GB per month on a 2mbps line.

I am not a heavy downloader, preferring to download a few torrents, and watch a few series via streaming. Also manage to download about 70 - 150GB per month, with no throttling on my 10Mbps line.

That's right  I'm thinking about packing up my stuff and moving to Connection. You said that they shape only on weekdays <3 That's a huge plus, hey! Would I lose a star if I download like a starved pig on Modise's farm during one weekend? My understanding of how IS' star rating system is somewhat inadequate :(

More than one. Downloading during the day counts against your stars 7 days a week, but weekends are completely unshaped regardless of star rating. I've done almost 80GB's this month and I'm on 2 stars.

I'm curious to know how much OP does in a month. I'm on 10 meg and have only done 60 gig so far this month with another ISP, so I'll probably hit my usual 150 gig or so.

How long does it take to recover a lost star?

My monthly usage is under 150gb.

If you max your line over the weekend you can go from 5 stars to 1 come monday. Then, it can take up to 10 days for them to recover.

This is why I say using a capped account with the uncapped (wish they could be combined for real, not OW style) is the best way as you'll need the capped 8:00-17:00 (sometimes) and uncapped 17:00-8:00 (full speed 1-5 stars) and weekends.

Not too bad, right? :(

And its working ... I am happy with my business account .....

:D

Where are you? South?

I think so :)

If you're not a heavy user then you might not even need the inconvenience of changing between two accounts.

At least you know what you get with IS, which is more than I can say for MTN, TI, OW, Mweb etc.

Don't think it's that bad, but you'll most likely go from 5 to 2. It seems like you really have to "abuse" the system to drop below 2 stars.

If I DL'ed flat out (4mb) from fri 5pm to mon 8am I would go from 5 to 1 star, but anyway, I hear you, that you have to be really naughty by not observing the DL window (23:00-6:00) and a lot of usage out of that window to get below 3.

Not exactly a heavy downloader :p My monthly usage rarely goes over 150gb.

I like Afrihost, to be honest :o Their support team is excellent, imho. The problem is I don't like their strict shaping method. I don't stream very often so maybe AH Business Uncapped 2Mbps is what I'm looking for at the moment.

I'm also in the situation where I'm shaped at 6.5%
It's halfway through the month and we already did 115gb. But after MTN takeover we have been shaped way more excessively than before.

Get a free 1gb account from @lantic and add the bolt-on package to it for R59 a month. The Bolt-on gives you unshaped, uncapped Internet at your full line speed from 6pm-6am and all weekend.

You're right, dropping to 1 star is easier than I thought. :o

If have often wondered what people have against Telkom.
They have been my ISP for a number of years, and truthfully I have very seldom had any problems with them, less so than with other service providers.

December 2013 through to February 2014 was hellish for me. Nothing worked, DNS timeouts were frequent, gaming pings spiked through the roof and to top it off Youtube wouldn't cache videos properly. Telkom Internet went, in the space from a week, from "great, I'd recommend them" to "Don't go there."

I'm considering returning at some point, but Crystal Web's prices seem really promising.

and expensive for a home account.

2Mb Business Uncapped is pretty reasonable for the unshaped connection. And I got it mainly for streaming.

and this is why folks on OW complained of poor performance come monday.
