The Truth behind MWEB's uncapped

Uhm You do realise, That Hotfile and Rapidshare has speed restrictions on free accounts.

Its not always the most stable service.

You are all a bunch of idiots. If the service was shaped, my downloads would alter it's speed consistently, depending on how much bandwidth is available at said point in time. This service is not shaped, it is being throttled. HUGE difference. My nntp download has been constant at 71KB/s since 8:00 this morning. And this is "after hours" as it is over a weekend. Do not sell me a 4mbits/s line if you are going to THROTTLE, not shape me, 90% of the time. And who the hell cares if I am downloading illegal stuff, I am paying for bandwidth, not wat I use it on.

And for all you goodie-two-shoes who will have a problem with this post, suig my kaaskrul sideways.

I am gatvol of this oh-thank-you-my-lords-isp-gods-that-are-shafting-us-in-the-new-south-africa.

Bwahahahah , that made me laugh :D

Let them blame whoever they want to, just because they not maxing out download speeds they come talking all kinds of crap about http shaping etc.

Most of us here know Mweb don't shape http, but as soon as some one gets a slow download these days they straight away turn around and blame it on shaping.

Let me just put you on track here Linoman & Semaphore - It is IMPOSSIBLE to shape HTTP protocol as that would render ALL HTTP downloads shaped and this would breach Mweb's SLA with regards to providing us a 4MBps adsl connection - as we would no longer get 4MBps speeds at anytime. They would have a massive full scale war on their hands if they were to try shape the HTTP protocol as a whole.

So by now you're either disagreeing with me, or you're scratching your heads saying but how do they know what HTTP traffic to shape then? How do they effectively shape this and not that - traffic based on the HTTP protocol. This I'm not going to tell you - this you can & should be able to figure out on your own, considering you guys both think you know what YOU'RE talking about.
It sounds like you are not very clear about what is possible. They can prioritise or de-prioritise anything they want based on any protocol they like. They can even make Speedtest.net reflect super speeds whilst giving us nothing. This is what people are finding out about Mweb. They are so keen on shaving bandwidth that they are pressing buttons so much and manipulating things that it is extremely unstable and unpredictable for customers.

The service is shaped, certainly it is. However the depth of shaping is very aggressive. They also degrade RS (and clones), P2P, Streaming, Games, Skype and anything they regard as affecting simple browsing on their very very narrow bandwidth.

What people are doing is connecting to RS, checking the speed and then trying the same on other ISP's and seeing massive differences.

I agree completely this level of service is unacceptable and does not hold true to there TV ad, which effectively state that u can actually use this type of account for that purpose.

Believe what you like :)

They cannot shape the entire http protocol (of course technically they can), but if they did, there accounts wouldn't be 4mbps adsl accounts. They would be whatever speed http is being shaped at...

Ok, so I am down to 23KB/s on my nntp downloads. All you idiots watching youtube videos, get off so i can finish my movies.

And yes this is tongue in cheek just to prove a point.

Downloading via Steam, downloaded both Shattered Horizon at MAX 150KB/s and now Supreme Commander 2 and getting 150KB MAX.

Makes me wonder if they are not shaping STEAM too... my logic here is, if for example, the speeds jumped to 160 or 170 or even till 200 now and again, that would be okay, but it never goes more than 150KB/s. Shaping?!?

Of cause, when SH did finish and I did try play it, I got disconnected for every server because my PING was to HIGH... surprised? No, not really.

NZB downloads have not gone more than 100KB/s the entire weekend, not even at the wee hours of the morning.

Also, my MWEB connection lost connection so many times!!!

No point in arguing with short sighted individuals.

@Gordan_R - Why the fk do i need to give you a tracert ( btw you seem obsessed with those ) , i WILL blame the ISP because the ISP is to blame its simple as that. If you are unable to understand what i have now said twice regarding the download. Mweb was slow i switched to my other account and it went full speed. Does that compute? And did it ever occur to you that perhaps the ISP hosting that site denies traceroutes like telia does on their network. You of all people should realize that, i mean there server traces to secureserver.net perhaps thats a bit of a tell?

@Sensou - Well you are lucky that you are getting the service you want but not everyone is satisfied, whether you says its not shaped/throttled is a matter of opinion. There are multiple people experiencing throttling/shaping on HTTP. My 4mbit has not performed like a 4mbit line since the beginning of the month.

My grandmothers internet also runs full speed , but she thinks thats because she switched the TV off.

Oooooo no wonder my downloads slow down a little whenever I read news24 on the TV!

Thanks Aunty pol, I wonder have never known!

It's kinda amazing how few people have grasped the IMMENSE difference between shaping and throttling here even though so many have tried to explain it to them. I'd dare go as far as to say shaping and throttling shouldn't be used in the same sentence.............but then I'd just be a hypocrite.

News server isint performing much better on Unshaped, get max 50Kb/s on it, and from what I saw on the unshaped account. Dont get more then 200KB/s.

Yeah, and we are idiots for complaining about throttling, cause we can likes to downloads the internets.

More numbnuts on this site than there should be.

I like this thread. Thanks for the research big lizard man. :)
Currently I'm experiencing the horror of Neotel. Sigh... someday I'll be on an ADSL line again.
