The VW Amarok Thread

I just spent almost an hour reading every post on this thread; was grabbed by the title. The more I look at an Amarok, the more appealing it seems - not to buy, just to look at.

"Unfortunately, the V6 TDI derivative(s) will only be added to the South African market later in 2017, in other words, after the facelifted range has been introduced."

Lol...seriously though the current Amarok is a seriously good bakkie & the MY2017 update should make it top of the pile. Top 2 at least.

News from Down Under suggests that the range-topping, V6-equipped version of the facelifted Volkswagen Amarok will feature even more oomph than initially thought – for brief periods, anyway – thanks to an overboost function.

According to motoring.com.au, the flagship derivative – which will employ a 3,0-litre V6 turbo-diesel – in the facelifted line-up will be able to sprint from standstill to three figures in 7,9 seconds.

The overboost function bumps peak power from 165 kW to 180 kW and maximum torque from 550 N.m to 580 N.m (as an aside, a slightly detuned version of the six-cylinder oil-burner, putting out 150 kW and 500 N.m, is also expected to be on offer).

Volkswagen Australia says the overboost will be accessible for 10 seconds from 70% throttle, in third and fourth gear from 50 km/h. After a five-second break, the function will again become accessible.

VW Australia’s commercial vehicles director earlier lashed out at the recently revealed Mercedes-Benz Concept X-Class bakkie, calling it an “over-hyped concept”.

The facelifted Amarok is scheduled to arrive in South Africa next year. It’s not yet clear whether the V6 models destined for our shores will feature the overboost function.

Volkswagen to offer high-performance V6 Amarok?

Volkswagen Amarok
The updated Volkswagen Amarok is due to hit SA in 2017.

The facelifted Volkswagen Amarok – complete with its new V6 turbo-diesel heart – launched in Australia this week. But the big news is that the German automaker may be working on a high-performance version of its refreshed bakkie.

According to motoring.com.au, the Wolfsburg brand is toying with the idea of building a double-cab with an even loftier output, perhaps in an attempt to gain an early advantage over the yet-to-be-launched Mercedes-Benz X-Class (which a VW executive has already branded “over-hyped“).

The current flagship, high-output version of the new V6-equipped Amarok makes 165 kW and 550 N.m, although these figures briefly rise to 180 kW and 580 N.m respectively, courtesy of an overboost function. That’s enough for a claimed 7,9-second sprint to 100 km/h.

The Australian publication says sources at VW have confirmed that the 3,0-litre V6 could be “easily tuned” to higher outputs. They also claimed that the eight-speed automatic transmission is capable of dealing with “up to 700 N.m of torque”.

A high-performance version of this engine, of course, already exists in the Audi SQ5, where it churns out 240 kW and 650 N.m.

The facelifted Amarok is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the third quarter of 2017.

It might not look all that different at first glance but Volkswagen’s Amarok has received some serious upgrades and you can expect the newcomer on local shores around July this year.

The most exciting prospect is the fitment of a new 3-litre V6 TDI turbodiesel engine, offered in 120kW, 150kW and 165kW output levels overseas, and although it technically has yet to be confirmed for our market, it’s hard to see why VWSA would starve SA’s power-hungry bakkie fans of this brawny new addition.

The other big thing about the 2017 Amarok is its completely redesigned, and much smarter looking cabin

...it’s hard to see why VWSA would starve SA’s power-hungry bakkie fans of this brawny new addition.

Yup, because what SA really needs are bigger bakkies with more power so they can drive even more like pigs*

Disclaimer*: Not all bakkie drivers drive like pigs and arrogant a-holes, but if you do take offense to my above statement then maybe the shoe fits...
