The VW Amarok Thread

132kw to 170kw is quite an aggressive map in my opinion. I don't really think you can say that it won't affect reliability in the long run as you will be putting key engine parts and the turbo under quite a bit of additional stress.

Volkswagen developing Amarok-based SUV – report

It’s something local Volkswagen fans have long been asking for, and now it seems it just might happen. Yes, a report out of Australia suggests that the German automaker is indeed developing an Amarok-based SUV.

According to motoring.com.au, a Volkswagen official has confirmed that the Australian arm of the automaker has also made a compelling business case for the new seven-seater, off-road-capable SUV to its Wolfsburg parent company.

“There is some very serious development happening at the moment for an SUV based on Amarok, which will be quite a large passenger vehicle,” Carlos Santos, Volkswagen Group Australia commercial vehicles director, told motoring.com.au.

“It’s not confirmed yet, but it’s been going on since the start of Amarok,” he revealed.

Santos added that the proposed bakkie-based SUV would in all likelihood employ the same 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel that is set to arrive with the upcoming Amarok facelift.

“The discussion has been re-ignited because obviously this V6 engine is able to be sold in the US.

“The 2,0-litre would never get into the States, but the V6 is the same as the one in the Cayenne and Touareg and is a well-proven engine. We’ve got the volume to justify the investment,” he explained.

An Amarok-based SUV would, of course, compete with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

VW's Amarok-based SUV to arrive by 2020 – report

Yesterday, we reported on a story out of Australia suggesting that Volkswagen is developing an Amarok-based SUV. And now a little more information has come to light, including a possible introduction date.

According to CarAdvice, any seven-seater SUV spin-off of the German bakkie will come only once the next-generation Amarok has arrived. And that puts a likely introduction date of 2020 into play.

Carlos Santos, Volkswagen Group Australia commercial vehicles director, told CarAdvice that the Fortuner-fighter won’t likely be based on the current generation of the Amarok.

“We’re talking about it again now. There’s been some success with competitors like [Isuzu] MU-X and [Ford] Everest and [Holden] Colorado 7 and [Toyota] Fortuner … everyone is doing it,” Santos said.

“I know there’s something in works, nothing confirmed, but we would absolutely love to see it in Australia, without a doubt. [However] it will be next-generation; it won’t be this generation. If it does come, it’ll be the one due around 2020,” he revealed.

Santos earlier hinted that the proposed bakkie-based SUV would likely employ the same 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel that is set to arrive with the upcoming Amarok facelift.

A short while ago, we reported that Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa was directed by the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) to amend a fuel consumption claim contained in a brochure for the Ford Kuga.

But now the ASA has received complaints against two other automotive brands. This time, however, the disputes relate to financial information (rather than fuel economy claims) displayed in local adverts.

In the first, dated 30 August, complainant Stephanus Bekker cites a Volkswagen advertisement appearing in the Sunday Times Lifestyle Magazine on 7 August. The print advert promotes the Amarok bakkie, and contains a table setting out all the financial information pertaining to the deal. The final item on the table is “Total Cost”, which is listed as R602 983.

Bekker argued that the amount did not include the deposit, and was actually just the total cost of repayments, credit, or financing after the deposit of 13% had been paid. He said that the advert was therefore “misleading”.

Volkswagen SA responded that it did not believe the advert was misleading “to the reasonable consumer”. However, the brand said that it appreciated the complainant’s concerns and voluntary undertook to “withdraw the advertisements comprising the subject matter of the complaint and further undertake that such advertisement will not be used in the same form in future”.

VW SA also noted that all future advertising would reflect this final amount as “Total Cost of Finance” instead of merely “Total Cost”.

Taking all the relevant information into account, the ASA Directorate said it was “satisfied that the voluntary undertaking would adequately address the concerns raised by the complainant in this particular instance”, adding that no further action on its part was necessary.

The second case, dated 29 August, saw Guillaume Cillie lodge a complaint about a Renault South Africa television commercial promoting the Kadjar, as flighted on DSTV channel 144 at the end of June.

At the end of the TV advert, the following information appeared in small font at the bottom of the screen (for approximately three seconds):

“With 10% deposit | Over 72 months | 35% balloon payment | 10.35% interest rate | Retail price of R364 900 | Total cost of R482 399 | Retail price in accordance with 1 June 2016 price list. Price excludes “on-the-road-costs”. Costs inclusive of initiation fee of R1 197 and excludes monthly service fee (R68,40) | Terms and Conditions apply | Features are model-specific and may vary | Deal is subject to credit approval terms and conditions of Renault Financial Services. A product of Wesbank. A division of First Rand Bank Limited. An Authorised Financial Services and Credit provider. NCRCP20″.

Cille complained that the finance terms in the commercial were “too small and fleeting to read properly”.

Renault SA replied that while it had used the “same format in the past few years without complaint, it was cognisant of the complainant’s view, and sensitive to his concerns”. The commercial in question had already been taken off air, but Renault SA said it was in the process of “ensuring that all future advertising carrying a financial offer [would] have an additional frame to allow more prominence to the terms of the offer”.

The ASA Directorate considered all the relevant documentation submitted by the respective parties and said that this “suggested remedy appears to address the complaint”. Therefore, no further action would be required.

When one member of the Teutonic Trio moves into a new segment, the others generally follow suit. So, with Mercedes-Benz set to offer a premium bakkie in the near future, there has been plenty of speculation around a BMW- or Audi-badged pickup.

The latest report involves the latter, with CarAdvice quoting Audi Australia managing director Andrew Doyle on the possibility of a four-ringed bakkie hitting the market.

“It depends if there is really a market there for a premium utility model like that,” Doyle said.

“What I can say is that the brand has proven that as much as we stretch into different areas and different segments, we can have success,” he added.

If Audi does indeed go the pickup route, it would make sense for the vehicle to be based on the Volkswagen Amarok (with the facelifted Amarok due to hit SA in 2017), in much the same way as the Mercedes bakkie (which is expected to be badged the GLT) is set to borrow its underpinnings from the Nissan Navara.

Doyle admitted that an Audi bakkie would be an “interesting addition” to the range.

“If the formula is there to ensure its premium quality and premium performance, we’d have to do a global case study to see if that would be the case. It certainly would be an interesting addition to the Australian fleet,” he told CarAdvice.

Volkswagen is preparing to show off a new special edition version of its facelifted Amarok double-cab bakkie– dubbed the Canyon – at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover later this month.

The updated Amarok – which is expected to arrive in South Africa in the second half of 2017 – can now be had with a 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel powertrain (although this powertrain has yet to be officially confirmed for local introduction).

We’ve already seen images of the Amarok Aventura special edition, which is be powered by this 165 kW/550 N.m engine, linked to the brand’s eight-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment on this model includes 14-way adjustable front seats, a parking assistance system (including a reversing camera), and a 3D colour display.

The newly revealed special edition Amarok Canyon, meanwhile, will feature a slightly detuned version of the six-cylinder oil-burner, putting out 150 kW and 500 N.m. This lower output model is based on the Comfortline equipment level, and features all-wheel drive and 17-inch “Aragua” alloy wheels.

The Canyon also boasts plenty of matte black exterior detailing, applied to items such as the sports bar, door handles, B-pillars and wheel arches. Darkened taillights also serve to set this model apart from its lesser siblings.

Will these special edition bakkies made their way to local shores? Well, we’ll have to wait until next year to find out…

Would be bad if VW S.A sticks it out with the 2L coke bottle under bonnet ,it would just help the hilux and ranger sales :P

What's with the 2L engine bashing? Is a 3L/2.7L turbodiesel better on a double cab?

Some people joke as a 2L is for Milk & Juice & Coke lol...

But serious though I am still surprised how every review I've read has said the new 2.8 in the Hilux is better in a number of ways than the 3.2 in the Ranger...

So its not always about displacement as they say....

"The upgraded Amarok, which gains a minor exterior facelift and a much smarter cabin, is scheduled to reach South Africa during the second half of 2017 and the engine line-up has yet to be confirmed. That said, we can't imagine them depriving power hungry South Africans of the V6,"

My vehicle went for a service today and Autohaus Centurion (they remain the best!) was courteous enough to send an Amarok to collect me - they know my weakness! :)

I will probably wait for the 2017 facelift given the substantially upgraded interior thereof but the current Amarok in the 132kw / DSG guise is in my personal opinion still the "nicest riding" and most refined pickup in our market, with the facelifted ranger a close second.

Agree with the ride. Love driving that model. Just a correction. It's not a DSG transmission. It's an auto 8 speed ZF unit. I think same/similar used in the BMW 1,3,5 Series (F10/F20/F30), etc. (I think)
