Reader review: New VW Amarok V6 bakkie driven in Tasmania

Wheels24 reader Johann Wehrmann got his hands on the latest Volkswagen Amarok 3.0-litre V6 model in Launceston, Tasmania.

Being the proud owner of a VW Amarok 2.0-litre, he was keen to sample the new 3.0-lire V6. Here's what he has to say about the bakkie:

Johann Wehrmann says: "It was a lovely drive, but I can't see myself paying such a high premium for only the bigger engine (yet), especially because I don't plan on towing anything soon. The 3.0- liter accelerates like a dream and it sounds really good, but for my purposes my faithful 2.0-liter still makes me smile.

Here’s a quick report on my test drive in the VW 3.0-litre.

It felt as though I was driving m 2.0-litre as the interior of the V6 isn’t really different except for a few minor upgrades here and there it’s still basically the same.

On the exterior, it’s only the front of the facelifted vehicle that’s really good-looking for me. I particularly like the Bi-Xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights, but these are niceties you could get available on the 2.0-litre too these days.

The engine is naturally a completely different story. The 3.0-litre has a lovely roar as you speed up. It has loads of power and would definitely get me into trouble as the maximum speed limit here and in Australia is between 100- and 110km/h.

I also don’t like the fact that the V6 comes standard with chrome stepping plates and a roll bar because I need to use my Alu-Cab and the roll bar would bother me. The standard 18” wheels don’t look to bad, although I’d still prefer the 17” Aldo’s.

And then of course there’s the issue of pricing. Entry-level units here in Tasmania starts at about Australian $65 000 which translates to about R670 000 in SA, and most likely will even be more expensive when all the taxes are added. That means in South Africa the Ultimate model will probably cost well over R700 000.

Go and drive it when it arrives in SA, you have to feel the grunt of the engine, but I reckon my 2.0-litre is more than suffice for my needs. The latter also starts out at about AUD $48 000 with Bi-Xenon lights and that’s more suited to my pocket.

High-Powered V6 Volkswagen Amarok Coming to SA


The tightly contested lifestyle bakkie market is set for a shake-up with the facelifted Volkswagen Amarok due for launch in South Africa soon. The flagship version will be powered by a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel motor and Volkswagen SA has confirmed that both the 165 kW and 150 kW versions will be offered locally.

The facelifted Volkswagen Amarok range is launching in South Africa soon and given the introductions of the all-new Toyota Hilux, updated Ford Ranger, Fiat Fullback, Isuzu KB facelift, new Mitsubishi Triton and the imminent arrival of the Nissan Navara, a refreshment of the Wolfsburg-based brand's bakkie seems quite timely.

In September 2016, it was confirmed to Cars.co.za that the 3.0-litre unit, which is also found in the Volkswagen Touareg (though tweaked for the Amarok) would be offered with outputs of 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque. Moreover, it's been reported (and confirmed) that the V6 motor will feature an overboost function, which will increase the power and torque outputs by 15 kW and 30 N.m respectively for bursts of up to 10 seconds at a time.

Now, Volkswagen SA has confirmed that the high-powered Amarok 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 165 kW and 550 Nm of torque will also make its way to the local market. The current 2.0-litre turbodiesel and 2.0-litre twin turbodiesel engines are expected to be offered as well.

VW Amarok V6: here's roughly how much you'll pay

Ever since Volkswagen confirmed that it would be offering a V6 TDI mill in the facelifted Amarok, there has been plenty of speculation around local pricing. And now we finally have a firm idea of what this new range-topping bakkie will cost when it arrives in June 2017.

CAR deputy editor Terence Steenkamp is currently in Spain, having first sampled the refreshed Golf range (see indicative pricing here) before moving on to the updated Amarok.

And, rather handily, he has managed to twist Volkswagen SA’s arm into providing indicative pricing for the V6-powered double-cab.

So, how much are we looking at? Well, it seems only one V6 derivative will initially be on offer in SA, with this Extreme-badged variant coming in at just over R700 000. This makes it about R60 000 more than the outgoing range’s flagship model, the Ultimate, which it will essentially replace.

The Extreme will feature the high-output 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, which means it will send a substantial 165 kW and 550 N.m to all four wheels via the Wolfsburg brand’s eight-speed automatic transmission. An overboost function bumps peak power to 180 kW and maximum torque to 580 N.m for 10 seconds from 70% throttle, in third and fourth gear from 50 km/h. After a five-second break, the function will again become accessible.

This should be enough to facilitate a sprint from standstill to three figures in 7,9 seconds. We’ll have to wait until closer to the launch to learn just how extensive this specific model’s standard specification list will be.

The detuned 150 kW version of the six-cylinder oil-burner is seemingly not on the cards for SA – for the time being, at least. The 103 kW/340 N.m 2,0 TDI and 132 kW/420 N.m 2,0 BiTDI engines, meanwhile, will be carried over to the refreshed local range.

Take note that this is indicative pricing, so it may change between now and the local launch.

2017 VW Amarok bakkie for SA: Details of the new V6

Cape Town - In September 2016, Volkswagen confirmed it would introduce a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine to its double-cab Amarok bakkie range.

There will be two deivatives: a base Highline trim and the higher-specced Extreme derivative.

Wheels24's Janine van der Post is in Germany driving the new bakkie, which will arrive locally in June 2017.

Estimated pricing for the Extreme model should be a less than "R800 000", while the Highline model should retail for little more than R700 000.

Two model line-up

VW commercial vehicle spokesman, Andreas Gottwald told Wheels24 that the TDI V6 Euro 6 engines are very important for the European market because of carbon emissions.

He said: "The two most important factors for the V6 is its robustness and reliability."

165kW/550Nm

The new V6 produces 165kW from 4000-5000rpm with peak torque at 550Nm from 1500rpm. It makes 130Nm more than the Ultimate version and is mated to an eight-speed auto box. VW's claimed fuel consumption figure is 7.6litres/100km with CO2 emissions quoted at 199g/km.

According to VW, this same engine is also used in the Porsche Macan and Audi Q7 and Q5, albeit with higher power. The biggest difference in comparison to the unit used in the Amarok is that it's tuned differently for high durability, and is able to withstand more than 300 000km of driving says the automaker.

Styling

The 2017 model has a new front styling with fog lights, bi-xenon headlamps with daytime running lights; comes with a sports bar and more chrome bits. There's also parking sensors with a reversing camera as standard; multi-collision brake system, digital voice enhancement so passengers in the rear can hear the driver better when speaking, and 20" rims instead of the smaller 17" versions.

It also has that cool "needle sweep" function you'll find in the Golf GTI when starting the bank is up, optional matt finishes.

The Amarok V6 now also has the same 3.5 ton towing capacity as its Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger rivals, and up to one-ton load capacity.

To channel SUV driving characteristics into the Amarok, VW has fitted the model with servotronic, speed-dependent power steering.

This 3L V6 TDI has best in class torque & power by a margin + that 8-speed auto box is excellent.

The tech is arguably better as well then any of its rivals.

Driven: VW ups the ante with Amarok V6


After seven years of making do with 2-litre engines (insert milk jug and Coke bottle joke here), Volkswagen has finally upped the power ante with a high output turbodiesel V6 in its Amarok double cab. But, all of VW's customers, and even the potential ones, who have been hankering for a badder German bakkie since 2010, will now have to put their money where their mouth is because this one won’t come cheap.

The Amarok V6 is scheduled for South African launch this July, and while we don’t have exact pricing yet, we were given a rough idea of costs while on a test drive in Germany last week. Our local line-up will comprise a Highline derivative likely to come in just over the R700 000 mark, and a top of the line Amarok Extreme just below R800 000. Both derivatives come with the same 165kW/550Nm (180/580 for ten seconds of overboost) 3-litre engine permanently driving all four wheels through the same eight-speed auto gearbox as current 132kW/420Nm 2-litre biturbo versions.

We’re also waiting for exact equipment specifications, but expect the Highline to mirror the current 2-litre version with items like cruise control, a colour touchscreen with Bluetooth phone prep, cloth seats, electric mirrors, ABS with EBD brakes, and four airbags. The Extreme (called the Aventura overseas) will add satnav, 19” wheels (20" as an option), leather upholstery, 14-way electric front seats and a moulded body-colour roll bar in the load bin among others.

Even after repeated questioning of German top brass at VW’s light commercial vehicles factory in Hannover, the brand remained mum on why it took so long to include what seemed an obvious engine fitment from the start of Amarok. Nevertheless, we have it now, and it shouldn’t disappoint even the torque hungriest buyers in the leisure pickup market. Though it’s tuned to specific parameters here, the 3.0 under the hood is essentially the same unit as found in Porsche’s Macan, Cayenne and Panamera, numerous big-bodied Audis including A8 and Q7, as well as VW’s own Touareg SUV. In other markets there will also be two less powerful Amarok V6s, but we’ll get the top version only.

Effortless performance

Volkswagen quotes a tow rating of 3500kg (with a braked trailer of course) with over a ton of load capacity, and while my test drive didn’t involve such work-oriented activities, I did get to blast it for a few hundred kilometres of high-speed Autobahn highway. As expected it’s a refined piece of hardware which delivers heaps of power in a swelling surge typical of big displacement turbodiesels. It ticks over fairly quietly with a faint turbo whistle at idle and at traffic-congested speeds, but when the road opens for a full-throttle burst the beast beneath the bonnet roars to life in a way that’ll send its most muscular rivals running for cover with towbars tucked beneath their bumpers.

It’s a beautiful marriage with that self-shifter too, happily ticking through its eight ratios until it settles on an ideal match for revs versus speed. At 3000rpm the Amarok V6 cruised at around 180km/h (on an unrestricted section of Autobahn, obviously), and even then it would skip down three gears in a blink with a right foot hoof.

The V6 introduction will coincide with a facelift of the rest of the Amarok range in July (the current Ultimate model will be discontinued), and though it’s a fairly insignificant refresh on the outside, the interior has been upgraded to be even more upmarket than it already was. Infotainment systems have been upgraded with better screens, CarPlay has been added for Apple phone users, and the remoulded seats have even been given a nod of approval by a group of chiropractors from the "Healthy Back Campaign". I can confirm they are very comfortable over long distances.

There are some hard plastics if you go scratching around at the back of, and underneath the dashboard, but as a whole the new model’s cabin is easily at a level of quality to take on the larniest bakkies at the premium end of the market. But none of them can match this V6 in sheer grunt.

Not by a longshot.

Imagine paying 800k for a bakkie and you still have to pay for satnav lol
