Also been struggling with weight and this year even with my usual eating habits I put on 20kgs and most of my clothes are useless now, think my metabolism has slowed down, tried some diets which slowed down my weight gain.

I've seen some success with a friend who went on some meds for weight loss and he lost 25kgs, not sure what meds it was but he did hit the gym and diet and still struggled.

Thinking of trying these GLP1 meds but afraid of the more hectic side effects, any advice here,

03/07/2025: 107.3kg

10/08/2025: 104.0kg
I've cut out quite a few things, on an average day I consume 4 eggs scrambled, with a dash of cream and 100g of mushrooms with a knob of butter.

I don't eat lunch.

Dinner will be some sort of protein chicken/beef/fish paired with either cauliflower/green beans/broccoli or spinach in a white sauce that I make using fresh cream and full fat cream cheese.

I also do a chicken broccoli and white sauce from time to time.

Worst side effect I’ve had so far with this has been constipation. Recently discovered dischem sells a “digestive enzyme “ is really helping with that

If you do decide to try, make sure it’s one that’s readily available, as things sit right now, I may not be able to find mounjaro at the end of the month and need to have a chat with my dr about what alternative options there are.

But honestly , at least for me, it’s working as advertised, I’ve had weight / metabolism issues my whole life , no matter what I tried , this was a last attempt before accepting being the big guy for the rest of my life, this is the first time ever I’ve ever had substantial weight loss.

I guess that makes me feel better, will make an appointment with my GP

Yes even myself, this is like a last shot although I still am young (24) I am starting to feel the affects of being over 100kgs

How much does it cost roughly, info online is super scarce

Thanks for the response :)

Budget around R5k a month, it’s not cheap, if you move up to higher doses , where it needs 2 ampules , double up,

This may change if they bring in the pens, but for now it’s an ampule a week which is around R900-1200 depending on the dosage

At the moment, my medical aid is paying from saving for it

also struggling with supply of 10mg this month. Dischem/Clicks and a private pharmacy say they will only expect resupply end of August.

Worst side effect for me is if i eat something fatty(beorewors, lamp chops etc) or onions (no idea why) on day 1 or 2 after the injection. I get bad stomach irritation and terrible burps.

I have been losing fairly slowly compared to others (average of 1kg a week over the 6 months) and the associated cost of that (around R25k) makes me feel a bit sick but i was also at my end point of trying to find something that works and so far this has. Also stopped the drinking from every weekend to about 4 times over the last 6 months.

Yeah, my next is most likely going to have to be (3x5)x4

I’m (barring 2 weeks trying different injecting sites) 2kg a week down, it really does change a persons eating habits

Thanks for this! Online information and Clicks has been contradictory.

I had a huge health scare at my last check-up and finally biting the bullet on this. My doctor recommended waiting for Wegovy to release (next week, I believe) before we narrow down which to take.

My local Clicks only has Ozempic which they said would be roughly R1400 to start and R2800 a month max. I'm beginning to think this is not true? I know my medical aid won't cover things as I'm not diabetic but hoping the cost won't balloon much further.

neither am i, if you have saving they will pay from savings, the doctors write it up a Type 2 preventative measures

week 2 on 12.5 is going fantastic, my usual 2kg a week over the last 10 weeks, seems to be accelerating a bit, this week 4kg down and we mid way

No savings on my plan - here's hoping Discovery Pathways (part) pays for it. It's been a life saver at the dentist before.

So this journey continues....

Took a reversal in Aug24 when my was was pregnant and worked VERY VERY hard since baby arrived to get all that weight back off esp after losing 14kg to start with. Thats officially 8.6kg down since April.

I am now officially at the lowest I have been in 6 years and intent to see what my "bottom" is I recon its going to stablise at 94kg but Im feeling healthier than ever!

To all the rest of you working hard keep it up!

The above is from gym, diet, 2 beer cap a week, 1 "sweet" a day and two cups of coffee daily. 7 cups of coffee with milk etc adds more than you think.

Weeee and down we continue, officially lower than I have been in I cant even remember, 94.2KG! also reversed my bad triglyceride levels from 7+ to 0.88 in the last 4 months.

View attachment 1838360

reason for the blood tests were got additional life insurance for the little one and the insurer slapped me with a 75% loading after all the hard work life insurance dropped all the loading on the new results. PEW PEW PEW

Guys these things are silent killers my dad had a heart attack just needed a stent etc at late 40s. Make sure to get yourselves checked.

📊 Triglyceride Level Classification (mmol/L)

LevelTriglyceride ValueRisk Category
Normal< 1.7 mmol/LIdeal
Borderline High1.7 – 2.2 mmol/LEarly Warning
High2.3 – 5.6 mmol/LElevated Risk
Very High> 5.6 mmol/LCritical

Just a brief note of how bad those levels were

Impacts of Triglycerides at 7.4 mmol/L

1. Acute Pancreatitis Risk

  • Primary concern. TG levels above 5.6 mmol/L sharply increase the risk of developing acute pancreatitis, a potentially life-threatening condition.
  • The pancreas can be damaged due to toxic lipid metabolites.

2. Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease

  • High triglycerides contribute to plaque buildupin arteries, leading to:
    • Coronary artery disease
    • Stroke
    • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)

3. Liver Damage (NAFLD)

  • High TGs often reflect or worsen non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, especially in insulin-resistant or overweight individuals.

4. Metabolic Syndrome / Insulin Resistance

  • Very high TGs are a red flag for:
    • Insulin resistance or prediabetes
    • Type 2 diabetes development
    • Metabolic syndrome (often with abdominal obesity, hypertension, and low HDL)

5. Erectile Dysfunction / Hormonal Issues

  • High triglycerides disrupt blood flow and nitric oxide balance.
  • Often correlate with low testosterone and reduced fertility.

6. HDL Suppression (Good Cholesterol)

  • TG levels this high usually suppress HDL-C, which is protective against heart disease.
  • Your HDL was ~1.04 mmol/L at the time, lower than optimal (≥1.2 for men).
Wow
I just found out my Triglyceride level is 15...
Wishing you strength on your journey.

Thanks I can tell you I have never felt better than I do now, Im certain that you should be prescribed fibrates as that level was double my highest which was 5-6x the max. All the best your side too!

I continue to lose weight now, down to 92.7 also increase fiber intake with psylium husk but the daily fibrate medication is key.

Also cut booze - booze is fuel to the triglyceride fire. I didnt want to cut it out totally just enjoy my two units a week

So, as of yesterday, I'm all aboard, too.

My doctor was insistent on Wegovy (as it's on-label for weight loss) but at R3100 for a starting dose it was sadly out of my price range. Ended up taking Ozempic (R1400 for the 0.25/0.5 starting pen) instead. Discovery Classic Smart OTC/Pathways did not pay toward it so eBucks did. :)

Weighed in yesterday at 106.6kg. Let's see how it goes!

I need to lose weight I've been struggling for a while but my eating is just out of control and my back is giving me problems which is preventing me from doing meaningful exercise. I'm seriously considering some form of semaglutide but I don't even know where to start and it seems like there are supply issues

If you can afford it, mounjaro, supply issues should be over by mid September

I'm in the same boat as you with regard to a bad back. Ozempic has pretty much killed any appetite I've had and just trying to eat something makes me feel nauseous. I assume things will calm down the longer I'm on it but this negative reinforcement on eating works wonders. For instance, I've gone from a morning of 6 cups of coffee (with 4 teaspoons each) to struggling to finish one cup. It's also cut down my portion sizes considerably when I do eat.

Speak to your doctor about going on it. I had to do some blood tests first but, after that, he was happy to prescribe semaglutides. Weight loss is off-label for Ozempic usage so I had to sign an indemnity form. Otherwise, it's been smooth sailing.

Not sure for Cape Town but there doesn't appear to be supply issues in Durban. I phoned around a few different places and they all stocked Mounjaro/Wegovy/Ozempic. Clicks is your best bet, because you can drop off your script at one then pick up your next dose at any other Clicks if your first choice runs out.

Will only know after a month if it's working for me but so far so good.
