The Xperia X1 Thread

Piesang, where do you go that they have enough stock to keep swopping out your phone?

News Flash!!!!!

I'm typing this message on my E90. I've put the Xperia in its box and in the cupboard. Monday morning I'm returning it and that will end my journey with the Xperia by my side.

After I missed a few calls today while I was doing shopping because the loudspeaker is so terrible and I only saw that I received a sms when I got home I decided that this phone will definately not be good for my business.

First impressions with the Xperia (first 2hours or so) was excellent. After that, well, no thanks. I really think I'm going to give the BB Bold a go. I havent seen or read anything bad about it yet. If anyone can give me some info I would appreciate it.

One thing is for shure, whatever I get next, I will not get excited till after using it at least 2 days without any problems.

got my x1 today.... what audio formats will the media player play? mp3? wav? wma?

everytime i try bluetooth a track to it my laptop says... this device has decined this file coz its not compatible????? any ideas?

ah another thing... i got a vodacom version, and im running mtn on it. so far so good. got the internet working on it.... but not the mms. mtn sent me mms settings but they failed upon installtion, i tried searching for manual mms settings, found them on web but cant get them to work...

I spoke to the MTN connect store in kenilworth and waiting on stock for my replacement model. I asked if the next model gives me trouble can i swap it out for another type of phone like the HTC touch pro or Black berry bold and she said no can only swap for the same phone???

But will see what happens with my replacement and if gives problems, will make dam sure can get a different phone!!

This is how it works, and I confirmed it at the Cape Gate Service Centre today as well.

Phone swop out (same phone)

You have 7 days from the day you signed the contract to swop the phone for a new one (same phone). If you swop the phone for a new one (same phone) after 3 days you again get 7 days to swop the phone for a new one (same phone).

Phone swop out (different phone)

If you have a problem like I do, 3 phones and all 3 of them are OBF (out of box failure) you have 7 days from the day you signed the contract to swop it out for a different phone. Each type of phone is linked to a different type of contract with a few phones out there on the exact same package with the exact same tariff which means if you have a Xperia and you pay R459 per month for it on a Anyime350 and you swop it out for a different phone at exactly the same montly subscription on the same plan they just give you a new phone (different model).
If the new phone you want is on the same package but you pay R469/month then they cancel the contract and you must sign a new contract for that phone. Then there could be a waiting period of a maximum of 5 days.

Hope I explained this clearly enough. Goog luck with your phones guys.

I'm disgusted because I got a Phonie Erection.

I had a iMate 2020 a long time ago. I remember it had two batteries, one battery the same as all other phones and then it also had one backup battery. If your main battery runs flat it starts to use the backup battery. I usually didnt last long, just enough time to get your chager out and start charging it. Or if you switched it off it could last for a few hours.

The new phones are nothing like that. You wont loose any information at all.

Thanks Piesang, good to hear the possible downsides of the X1. Gonna have to reconsider coz I cant afford to miss calls due to an inadequate speaker. Very upset hear that...

It's a pleasue. We have to warn people out there if something is not right with a phone. If I had one Xperia that didnt work then it would've been ok, well, sort of ok. But 3 unis is a bit crazy. I'm not going o be one of Sony Ericsson's test dummies.

I think they tried something that's too big for them to accomplish.

1st Windows Mobile device by SE
1st 800 x 480 resolution screen
1st full qwery for SE
1st SE to use microSD
1st GPS phone by SE (I think)

Beter luck with the X2.

Here is a short personal review

Wifi reception is bad (compared to the E90 and N95)
QWERTY keyboard doesnt feel nice (compared to E90)
Loudspeaker is not loud enough. (I've had a few missed calls and couldnt hear any sms come through except when it's next to me)
Loudspeaker is also too soft for watching movies. You'll need headphones.
Phone freezes sometimes when going from today screen to panels or when receiving a call or sms. Especially when you open a sms and slide the phone open at the same time.
Panels are very jerky.
Earpiece speaker has bad sound quality (compared to E90, N95, 6300, etc.....)
On screen keyboard jumps up when a application needs typing. (why does it have a QWERTY then???)
Video camera is bad quality. Videos are jerky.
Photo quality is bad.

I think that's enough for now. Shame.

Thanks Piesang
I only just got mine today and i am definitely no power user like you guys so far its ok does tend to take its time when selecting icons in setting etc. guess being a newbie to a WM phone i am not sure how to push it just yet. Must say some of the issues piesang has spoken about is a litte worrying. Will keep using it have 7days.

Gee's I'll be giving the Experia a miss... thanks for the head's up.... We down to 3, N85 or HTC Touch Pro/HTC HD...

Thats why its always better to test a phone yourself. You cant always go on someone else's word. The Xperia may be working 100% for one of you guys. But believe me, if you used to a Nokia E90 then you need a very good replacement. I walked into a few cellphone shops and tell them that I'm due for a upgrade but I need to replace my E90 then I just get a blank stare. Hopefully the Blackberry BOLD will do the thing.

I've never liked Blackberries, they solid, well built and reliable but so are Toyota's. The styling is so conservative and boring IMO. I reckon if you were sold on the Sony then you should give the Touch Pro a bash, they practically twins but the difference may be that HTC has been down the WM road before and they've made the mistakes SE is making now with the Experia. The Touch Pro would have to be the more complete article...

Hey Piesang,

I've been very interested reading your comments about the X1 problems but unfortunately due to a trigger happy mod I could not post a response.
instead of sniping would you mind providing some details of the thread you are referring to?

Ouch!
Being a SE fan for number of years, ive learnt never ever buy/use the latest
SE especially from the first batch, they always always have SW/FW problems.
Hence my reason for not opening it. Remember how bad the P990 was when it launched... Ill wait for the next batch, even though the techi confirm mines has the latest latest FW.... 1.10.25.18 <- thats apparently the new stable FW.

Dont waste your time again! The bolds not a good phone imo.
If you need a phone now, theres only 3 I would consider, iPhone, TD and E71
Im using all three, mainly the TD and E71, the iPhones is just for games, apps and wifi.
