Downloaded and installed xubuntu to an old laptop that shipped with XP. Specs are Centrino 1.5 with 256 mb ram. This machine would struggle in vista, but running Xubuntu on this thing is amazing. Running quite smoothly, makes it awesome for some light browsing. I would highly recommend this OS for anyone looking for a linux distro for an old machine.

Anyone else have experience with Xubuntu?

Posting from the Xubuntu machine right now ;)

I don't use Xubuntu, but I use XFCE installed ontop of a normal ubuntu, so I reckon it could be the same :P.

XFCE is an awesome DE!

Have used Xubuntu quite extensively. I'm not sure that it' much more lightweight than gnome, however, I love the clean look of the interface.

I'm looking forward to trying Lubuntu when it comes out.

Tassidar, gnome kills this laptop... pretty much brings it to a halt sometimes.. Xubuntu runs nicely :) Thus lighter ;)

Interesting. I have read that the memory usage at idle of Xubuntu at idle is actually higher than that of Ubuntu. Certainly the apps are much more lightweight e.g. Abiword vs. OpenOffice. At any rate, I'm very fond of Xfce and have installed it on my mother's computer.

I'm typing this message from a Lubuntu build booted off a flash disk on my Aspire One. Lubuntu runs like a dream, and if you really want speed on older architecture, you should perhaps look at it.

hmm will give lubuntu a shot when i find some time. Dont use the machine really, just play around with it by putting different operating systems on it.
