I'm planning on traveling Europe and America from June onwards next year. How will things look for me then?

Still going to be looking slightly shaky in June imo. I think It'll stablize more towards the end of the year.:o

SA hasn't been hit too bad yet...but I think we're going to get a hardcore surprise on the FDI balance pretty soon.:o

think madmax...then think of madmax2. then remember the film location of clockwork orange..that is how europe and america will look.

In July this year I bought tickets from the UK to Pittsburgh at £770 each, and now I can get the same itinerary with the same airline at £440 - was quite surprised at this, and the only thing I think that could have driven the price up in July was the UK school holidays.

AGL and BIL are the biggest losers, both lost around 15% this month.
That brings the ALSI down.

The rand will be propped up again once overseas Private equity funds start picking up our companied on the cheap again.

alf101, looks like you know what is going on, as like some other formites on here. Do you trade? :)

No-one knows in these situations. It could be at 15 to the dollar. It could be at 4.

On a balance of probabilities I would lean to the Rand being stronger. By June next year I suspect the world will be a calmer place. Though that's not to say the world economy will be booming again.

So Skinner, at what Euro/Rand rate did you transfer your wealth offshore?

So Skinner, at what Euro/Rand rate did you transfer your wealth offshore?

Some chunks of it at 12.30 earlier today, then at 12.65 the second time this afternoon. Tomorrow is a third chunk and I'm hoping to get 13.00, I just have to wait for the money to be transferred from my CHF account to EUR. In total, just under €100k. Unfortunately I could not liquify some of my fixed savings in time, otherwise I would have transferred that too now.

I think the rates will bottom out by the end of this week and then "recover" to the 11.xx range next week.

Even if it goes back into 12.xx or even 13.xx again in a few weeks, the interest I would have gained at 12-14% in SA on the total capital amount would already have made the transfer now worthwhile.

Pity about the low oil price, I suppose that goes along with the market crash... otherwise my gold would have rallied. Still, it ain't doing too bad. And the moment the oil price goes up again, it will soar.

Agreed. Rand will regain strength next year.

Yea right? When next year? When Jacob becomes president? The rand will never recover from this one. R13 to the dollar is going to be the new $7 to the dollar.

It might, this was caused by global issues, not issues specific to SA. Of course Zuma doesn't help much.

Hey guys,

Can someone tell me what the hell is going on with the US dollar to Rand exchange rate?

I'm not exactly keeping up with these things but I drove past saslin bank yesterday and I saw it was 8.8 RAND to 1 US dollar!!??

It was like at 6.5 last year, what in the world happened?

I thought the Fifa world cup should increase our rand value by a bit for potential investors?

This damn exchange rate ruined my dec holiday plans

i does go down in december due to the amount of people buying it for travelling so dont panic, last year december it dropped to around R5.4 before picking up
