Guess I have to scrap plans on returning to SA next year. With the rand getting stronger my savings are becoming less. I was hoping it would hold out until then but no chance now it seems :(

17.0773

So close to the R16 mark to the pound.

13.2651 USD/ZAR

I saw to in comparison to the USD it's never been this weak for a long time. Couple of decades at least. Not good for UK based companies with majority of profits outside the UK

The fall still isn't nearly as big as experienced during the financial crises.

That's because they haven't pushed the A50 button yet and there is still a possibility of "soft Brexit" or even no Brexit at all. It still has a long way to go...

I think it was due to the US inflation data released today.

Would that affect the ZAR against other currencies also?
ZAR is weakening faster than what the USD is strengthening and there's been enough proof recently that our currencies strength is more often than not linked to politics these days.

How do you measure whether the $ is gaining strenth or if the Rand is losing? Measure against the Euro?

With the USD being the world's reserve currency, yes, dollar movements affect the strength of other currencies depending on their exposure, which can affect their exchange rate with the ZAR as well.

Although today the UK also released CPI data so GBP movements are likely more about that than the dollar today.

I look at a dollar index, if the rand is moving and the index is not, then its rand strength/weakness and vice versa
