There is no SAT3 failure says Telkom

This is where marketing fails to fact check... in all probability, Telkom is probably right, and in the fine-print it specifies specific routes they'll route you through and nothing else. Route goes down, so do you, but since they can change their own route, they will.

So Telkom decides to set the record straight only after a full 7 days have passed? And you guys are cheering them for it and lambasting the other ISPs?

Telkom have not changed much. They're still a big fat slow donkey. At least the press releases from MWEB and WebAfrica were provided soon after the downtime, informing customers of the problems, even though not all the information was available at the time.

I'd rather have info that is 65% accurate immediately, than 100% correct but only provided 7 days later.

Eish the way I see it.. yes telkom has been raping us. But they have the most robust network currently and their ISP is the most affordable for middle capped accounts ... sadly : and maybe their uncapped, which seems to be doing well.

Only gripe I have with them is the high ADSL connection rates and voice line rental which I never use :(

Let's see when WACS get connected.. maybe some more specials coming our way :)

If the problem is not on sat3 which is provided by telkom and telkom itself suffered no downtime then why would telkom have to release anything. The other ISP were passing it of as an SAT 3 problem

i think both a lying to some extend

Morning all,

Just to clear things up here. Yes, the SAT3 cable does have a variety of options to link onto the landing station at Portugal. The article isn't wrong, but it also isn't right - if you know what I mean?

It was mentioned as SAT3 for ease of communication to customers. My personal opinion, don't think we need to acuse ISP's of lying...

I spoke to someone on Saturday who works for a company dealing with networking and VoIP. He said that last week was a difficult week precisely because of the SAT3 outage. So this could be yet another lie by Telkom. I mean we all know how honest they are.

Hi Everyone

This is not really a question of accuracy, it’s just about how much detail you go into.

People often think of international capacity as a single cable running along undersea from point A to point B, but in fact it’s a complex network of cables which is linked up with multiple providers and redundant routes along the way.

When the outage occurred near Portugal we lost access to our SAT-3 capacity and this is what we reported. I’m sure that the Telkom statements are also completely accurate and that they had alternate routes available to them via other cables linking into SAT-3.

In our case we chose to offset the outage by increasing our Seacom capacity while repairs were being carried out as this is a solution that was more readily available to us.

I hope that clarifies things a bit.

Kind Regards
Will

at the end of the day people don't care what the problem is/was they just want their connection!
