Please folks, lets get one thing straight - there is no such thing as "local internet". The core of the word INTERnet is INTER - as in INTERnational AKA worldwide.

"Local internet" is nothing more that a term tekom uses to mislead people. When a user is abusing substances like copper they get high on all sorts of crap and fooled into this "local internet" nonsense.

"Local internet" should be correctly term NATIOnet as in NATIONAL network AKA "local" only.

So there you have it - you either have Internet or Nationet (or nothing). But there is no such thing as "Local Internet".

then do explain words like intervarsity etc?
Me, I've always assumed the Inter bit signifies the fact that it's sever networks connected to each other. Ok, actually a shirtload of networks. Don't think it had anything to do with international when it started out *my take on it*

Good point, but it is generally assumed that the intnernet is international. So lets not degrade the word by adding local to it.

Nationet sounds a lot more poor than "local internet" - so it is a step in the right direction.

Spot on Tux. The prefix 'inter' means between or amongst. As you said, the INTERnet is a network built up of several lesser network. These sub-networks are all *inter* connected to form the... yep... internet. Nothing to do with international.

The meaning of INTER is actually "between". Intervarsity means between 2 varsities. International = between different nationals. So the "local internet" term is 100% correct as it is a connection "between" local networks.

ot: do other countries have "local internet" though?

I think you have just resolved your own misinterpretation of the origin of the name.

As I said - the general believe is that Internet is International. Sure the term originated as an INTERCONNECT between networks, but this ain't the 60's anymore...

So you think wikipedia is not a valid source? Shame, here, have a slice of [-]humble[/-] google pie.

Seriously - you folks have been havin it :D

You shan't go on, because you are missing the point.

I did not dispute the fact that the internet is a global network of computer networks, as you can see in my previous posts. In fact, if you even read my previous posts before firing off a barrage of sidetracked information, you would see that all that I was referring to was about the usage and origin of the prefix "inter".

As for the term "local internet", it clearly does exist. Perhaps not in the strict etymological sense of the word, but it does in the scope of the South African telecommunications vernacular.

Whether this is because Telkom has arbitrarily created the phrase to fit their greedy philosophy is irrelevant. What is relevant is the fact that "local internet" is merely a name given to a service offering available to us local folk. Semantically the phrase, or the name, "local internet", exists. The proof is in the fact that it is available; it is generally accepted; and it is known to be available by the majority of local internet users.

Hmmm, just because internet is being defined as a worldwide network does not supercede the origin of the word

Let me point you to:

inter, intro
between

international, intercept, intermission, interoffice, internal, intermittent, introvert, introduce

Or from your own Wikisources
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/inter-
Prefix

inter-

1. A prefix signifying among, between, amid, during, within, mutual, reciprocal

Much like googling has become synonymous with "using a search engine" internet ( "connected networks" ) become synonymous with World-wide-web

... and the point of all these semantics is...?

The point is very simple - I want "them" to name it, advertise it, speak of it, hate it, and do much more with it using the most inferior term possible.

Nationet sounds backwards and far removed from Internet. It sounds sub-Internet if you will. That is what I am getting it really.

I want people to start calling "local internet" a name that is on the same inferior level of the concept itself.

Fine, call it "the localized subsection based upon switching technology"

this is silly. just as silly as the concept of local internet itself.

it's an enigma wrapped in a conundrum covered with puzzle pieces and riddled with a question.

meh, pointless argument if you ask me... the landscape is due to change soon anyway. let's have this discussion after the "internet" becomes cheaper than the "local internet".

Hence my suggestion to call it Nationet. A name that truly sucks more than me.

If you see an ad for 2G Internet for R250 or 30GB Nationet for R229 - which are you gonna take ?
