Two Telkom technicians came by about 30 minutes ago. They measured my signal and said it's strong and that there are no obvious problems at this end. I showed them my (recently very chequered) speedtest.net history. They said that they would send their findings, including my speedtest.net results, to their tech department, who would probably look at the problem in 24-48 hours and try to find out what's going on.
Oh, they also said that a number of other people in "this area" (I'm not sure whether they meant Cape Town or the Southern Suburbs or just Bergvliet) have recently complained about the same problem ...
I want to recall that comment... Been at home for the last 2 days on sick leave. Speeds and latency are great as above during the day but vary significantly in the evenings. So it's partly congestion and partly something they changed on 30 April 2012 since my and many others connections worked great all the time (peak and off-peak) before that date. This is not restricted to just one tower in Cape Town too since people in various regions such as Paarl and the southern suburbs started experiencing problems on the same day.
Another test done in Margate/Ramsgate - was there for couple days.
1820 + Sitecomm router.
Stable signal all times 26%.
Night time stable speed 2.7 - 3mbps down and ~2m up, packet loss - 0% - i guess that signal is not great.
Day time is crap! 30-80kbps down and 10-20 up, packet loss 20-70%.
Conclusion: not enough bandwith at the backbone, oversold.
Now i understand all this complaining peoples - Broadband is slover than old modem and very offen simply stops!
Seriously I am disappointed at why you people complain so much. The internet can be down for 1 day to carry important updates and maintenance at sites. I noticed with the recent updates done my area is finally stable and not so many frequent disconnections anymore.

We complain in proportion to the amount we pay for service, service that is not delivered. We pay top dollar for sub-standard, inconsistent service, and then people expect us to smile ear to ear - don't work here, sorry. Not aiming this at 8ta in particular.
Only problem I have with 8ta, currently is that my K4605 modem connects, inconsistently to their network, but I am not bitching about it, ( not loudly at least) as my B683 router connects and works very well from my location. My B683 does not give slower speeds, than the K4605, when it does make a good connection.
The problem that I am having is that this worked perfectly 6 months ago, now I'm lucky if I get 40kb/s downloads. Sometimes it's impossible to browse.![]()
Hi elf_lord_ZC5!
Not really sure what your problem is - it seems you have a problem with your K4605 and your B683 works fine?

It is most probably K4605's desire for more power.
Yip, tower location, indirectly. A real factor is how much transmitting power modem is allowed to use. This value can be determined by location (by example hospital repeater), but in most cases it is based on signal strength reported by modem back to the tower. CLoser distance and direct sight, less power required.
Also there is a matter of interference, your signal can be lost (not reaching the tower). It is probably your case, as router has more efficient antenna (6dBi) than modem.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, a few weeks ago I had two Telkom technicians come out to my house. I never had any feedback from 8ta or Telkom after that, but a few days later the situation got substantially better. I was getting fairly good speeds and a consistent connection for about two weeks.
Then, some time on Sunday or Monday this week, all hell broke loose again. But in a different way. According to my modem, I'm always connected to the 8ta network. But my ability to do anything goes up and down like a yo-yo. I'll have five minutes when everything is working, then five minutes when nothing loads, then five minutes of good, then five minutes of bad, etc. The net effect is, of course, to make my 8ta connection essentially unusable for long periods of time.
Anyone else having this experience?
