if the GIS software is intensive and handles more than 2 cores, than maybe a quad core might be worthwhile.

I concur, you'll be better off with bigger screens and a less powerful graphics card. You can always replace the card in a year's time if necessary, but the screens should last a lot longer than that. ;)

Well .... I've put the quote in. Went with the 8800GT and the 2x Acer 20". Also slightly downgraded that PSU to a 600W. So I'm still looking at a decent monster right? :D

What was the final system that you went for? Can you post the quote? Maybe we can find it cheaper somewhere :)
