if the GIS software is intensive and handles more than 2 cores, than maybe a quad core might be worthwhile.

If I used it for the more intense side of GIS, I would definately be talking of a quaddie .... but it's only used rarely and then only the database features anyway.

I am not exactly clued up when it comes to mobos but that one does not look great.

2 RAM slots means no upgrading in the future should you ever want to.

Chances are that 4GB RAM will be more than enough for you though.

Until M$ release the all-new all-powerful Windows 7, needing like 16GB RAM just to run it

An extra R150 for the upgraded PSU (550W not 600W .... I was mistaken), an extra R100 or so for the upgraded RAM and the cpu is an Intel Core2 Duo 1333FSB E8400 (3.0ghz).
