They're only connected at the Cape Town exchange, so Durban and JHB go through international. But on their forums they said MWeb was busy trying to fix that so everything goes through Cape Town until WebAfrica get to the JINX. Not sure if/when it's going to happen though..

Just like the cut in call termination rates didn't result in financial benefits to the end user (some rates actually increased significantly!) this will in all likelihood also have no benefit to the end user.
The next move for MWEB is to allow DSTV on Demand to all South African citizens, irrespective of which ISP they use.
Telkom would then have 2 options, to deny their subscribers access and be the bad guy, or allow DSTV on Demand and route all the streaming video via the international links.
That would put pressure on Telkom to peer freely.

so 8ta's entry into the market had nothing to do with interconnect drops?
i fail to see how dropping interconnect and opening peering can be a negative thing for the consumer ultimately.
it's up to the players to drop their prices and if there's more competition, there's a higher chance that prices will drop or the saving will be passed on to the consumer in other ways
we've come a long way, and every little change which favours competition and liberalisation in the market will ultimately benefit the consumer in the end.

No-one ever said that this move was about reducing costs to the consumer, I wish people would get that through their thick skulls. I don't know where they got that idea from. You're complaining about something no-one ever promised, and no-one expects, except you for some reason.
You could just as well say: "Oh, so MWEB is trying to force greedy bastard telco's to peer locally? This is just marketing, when are consumers going to see their brand new free cars?"

this is south africa where some would want to pay next to nothing for services rendered, but are able to fork out $$$ when it suits them, right

Okay can some explain this to me... Mweb says peer with us , and it will be free , telkom says peer with us and you will pay.... Surely that should be a no brainer? If some company can save costs this makes so much sense.....

In other words... for the sake of Telkom's bottom line, SA is first world.
Yup. Now MTN/IS/Vodacom need to cut their transit links which would completely alienate Telkom and force all their traffic to go internationally.
The good side effect is that MTN / IS / Vodacom would save a boatload of money. Over time those cost savings will be passed down to the consumer when small businesses fight for position in the ISP space. I'm really liking all this, we've been needing this change for a long time and its good to see the big boys coming to the party.

Now if only WebAfrica could sort out their Gauteng based clients, it would be great.
Take the Call of Duty servers for instance. I live in Pretoria and can play on CPT based COD servers. I can see the Jhb servers, but the pings are 400ms and higher. Reason is some issue at Jinx or something. Apparently they needed some hardware or other to get the peering sorted. Now the hardware has been acquired about a week ago, but still nada. Come on WA. Make it happen guys. PLEASE! I've already had to guy a LOT of extra cap from Afrihost to be able to play on my clans' Jhb based server.

Go MWEB. Free peering can only benefit everyone. SAIX needs to join the party but they won't as if they peer with MWEB then they will lose all their peering income from other ISPs as well. The other ISPs will all just peer with MWeb to get to SAIX.
