Did I say we have the best in the world? No I said we have some of the best.. meaning it's up there with the best in terms of people running it. It is ranked among the safest stations in the world. Obviously we have some very skilled people working over there?

My first hand knowledge? Did I say I had a lot? As I said I just know people who work there, they tell me about the safety of the station. I did many tours a couple of years ago and was impressed.

Sure there have been some explosions but the thing is still contained. That is after suffering the biggest quake that anyone alive today has ever experienced. If anything this stands as a testament to how safe nuclear power can be when it is managed properly.

What I really don't get is all the Greens bunny-huggers now taking this opportunity to protest against nuclear power... what would they rather have to replace it?... COAL?!? :wtf:

A loose nut, would say differently.

Don't think the Milnerton Fault line is going to get too active from what I remember reading.
But even then, the plant is built to withstand an earthquake - of what magnitude I can't remember.
I predict meltdown will be due to one of the Mexican contract workers during outage.
That or when one of the operators in the units pulls a wrong lever - as they get confused between the two units quite often down there.

OMG you must be from a "Special School" or belong in a "Special Class". It's a hellva stretch to even compare the 2. then you call the highly qualified people that operate the Koeberg power stations "goons" In all the years the power station has been operational never have there been an instance where meltdown or impending meltdown. Unlike the people working in YOUR environment these people at the power station are NOT picked off the street and placed in token positions.

I get very PISSED OFF when oofs spew out doom whenever the occasion present itself. Before your NEXT spewing session give it some thought. You might come act smarter (I doubt it tho) :p

Uh yes it is still contained. While there have been some leaks the containment systems are still operating and no leak has yet even close to approached lethal ranges. I don't know what definition of "contained" you're using but by the English definition the radioactivity is being contained. All of this from a quake of a magnitude several times larger than the systems were designed to endure. Quite an achievement if you ask me.

Just for the record, Koeberg isn't the only nuclear reactor in the country. Safari was commissioned in 1965.

If I lived in CapeTown, I would be more concerned with the effects of a Tsunami.
 
I am not sure if ignorance is bliss when it comes to me and Koeberg...but I cant say I am worried about it. It has been operating now for how long without a major incident, apart from a sabotage attempt here and there? If were are serious about protecting our planet and environment, then nuclear is the way to go I think. We simply do not have the money etc to go large scale solar. I am sure the current reactors being planned and even built right now will be even safer now after what happened in Japan.

That's correct. We can all learn by experience and the current "disaster" experience in Japan are priceless for future planning of Nuclear plants. I am all for Nuclear stations and will support it if and when required.

Oh you shoulda seen the anti-Palestinian crusade this forum erupted into a few days ago when the media falsely reported that Palestinians had killed a Jewish family. It was quite scary. They still don't even know who did it, but that topic was an eye opener. I won't name names, but just in fairness to the OP it's worth remember those middle east threads we've all posted in :P
