Tips about the Samsung Galaxy S3

So I just got a Samsung Galaxy S3 as a present and I would like to know if anyone on the forum has a few tips for me.

Tips as in anything I should know, like how to handle it, what settings should be changed, what anti-virus to use ect ect, go nuts the more info you provide the better :)

I am not looking for google answers, I am looking for your experiences with the phone.

You no longer have to charge phones when buying new. Just charge till full and use. Tips? I dunno, just install the apps you want and go wild. :D

Thanks for the quick response, that's cool cause the little light just went green, is there any harm though keeping it on charge?

Don't think there is any harm. When the light is green, it's full. Don't expect much from that battery though. I barely make it through a day.

Nope go ahead and ask, but read the whole thread first. There are many many many valuable tips in that thread. Also review the useful apps thread for some, um... well usefull apps :D

I'm sure the guys there will be able to guide you better. Sorry, got an S2 so it is quite different.

However- try not to drop it too frequently. The screen is not as tough as the previous generation model.

While there are quite a few safety stops in place, its generally not a good idea to overcharge a battery. If all else fails read the manual. There's a nice big warning in there not to overcharge.

Other than that, make sure you enable and disable syncing for accounts based on your data plan. If you don't have a data plan, disable all syncing when on mobile data otherwise your airtime is gonna be severely abused. On that note, when installing apps, don't use auto update if you have a limited data plan.
 
Some handy tips, or they might come in handy:
  • For a screenshot, swipe the screen with the side of your hand
  • To mute a call, turn the phone over on it's face
  • To detect a WiFi network, shake the phone
  • In your call log, swipe left on the number to send a message; right to make a call

Buy screen protector

have gmail account to connect to play store

cut you normal sim card to fit on sim card slot ( 12mm * 15mm)

for anti virus - AVG Antivirus if free.

screen display - set brightness to Auto.

There is a setting to sync and update only when connected to WiFi; use that setting.
 
I have to admit that the original S3 thread has become a little disjointed as there are a lot of discussions in their now relating to custom ROMs, rooting and the like. It should have been split very early into standard SGS3 and a Custom SGS3 threads. I like to follow what is being said but have little interest in rooting.
 
Goto settings > about > locate the rom name that you are using ie it will says ics 4.04 or jb 4.2 and tap on it rapidly :-)
 
My tips:

- Once Gmail account set-up, go to Google on your PC. Top left, click playstore and search for apps there rather than on your phone.
- If you are worried about data, install '3G Watchdog'. You can set a daily/monthly limit and get warnings if you go over.
- Under Settings, Data Usage, you can view the data each app uses individually. Click on each app and you can set app settings as well as restrict background data.

Sure there are more things you will learn as you go along. Other than that, install apps that you like. I have one page with apps just for my kids. Educational stuff that they enjoy. Cool thing about Android is that you personalise the handset for you.

Um, get a screen protective cover for scratches, I have a rubber type of phone cover/pouch. So thin you can't even see the difference in size.

I love the case even though it was R300. Worth it for such an expensive device. Really soft silicone inside and hard plastic outside, although as Park has said black one scratces easily on the back.
